During the evening she also received a Distinction Award in five subjects, three trophies, and a University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship for $20,000 that she will be accepting to study Biomedical Science in 2017 and beyond. Rather than organise the school through two structures of a vertical school and horizontal deaning, we will be organising the school around the house structure. Each small school with our large school will be led by a Deputy Principal, Head of School and Vertical House Dean. The aim is to ensure that we maintain a sense of belonging, provide strong academic mentoring from Year 9 through to Year 13 and continue to develop a strong sense of house pride and school pride. Student voice has indicated that we review our Tuesday timetable, and as a result the student timetable will be organised around 48 hours over 10 days. We will be following a similar structure to other schools in Hamilton of an earlier finish, one day in the week. This will allow student led activities such as tutoring to take place, co-curricular practices, university visits, workshops, leadership activities and so forth. Finally, a reminder that a TEACHER ONLY DAY will be held on November 11th. *Our end of term newsletter will feature all of our prizegivings. The past two weeks have been frantic as we have dealt with a myriad of things. Our senior prize giving was held in Claudelands for the first time and we were really pleased with the evening. Congratulations to all recipients of awards. A special congratulations to our Academic Dux,

During the evening she also received a Distinction Award in five subjects, three trophies, and a University of Auckland Top Achiever Scholarship for $20,000 that she will be accepting to study Biomedical Science in 2017 and beyond. Her academic success has been outstanding, placing:· 1st in Mathematics with Statistics· 1st in Physics· 1st= in Music· 1st= in Spanish· 4th in English· and in 2015, as a Year 12, she placed 1st in Level 3 Biology, 1st in Level 3 Chemistry, and 1st in Level 3 Mathematics with Statistics

As we look to 2017, we are excited with the changes in our pastoral and guidance team. Rather than organise the school through two structures of a vertical school and horizontal deaning, we will be organising the school around the house structure. Each small school with our large school will be led by a Deputy Principal, Head of School and Vertical House Dean. The aim is to ensure that we maintain a

sense of belonging, provide strong academic mentoring from Year 9 through to Year 13 and continue to develop a strong sense of house pride and school pride.

SPORTS AWARDS

PASIFIKA AWARDSWarm Pasifika Greetings,

What a busy three weeks it has been for Pasifika. We recently celebrated Pasifika success at the Maori and Pasifika Awards evening and we are proud of the extra effort the girls made this year; it was celebrated in true HGHS Pasifika style, with song, dance and food. We were treated to a fabulous presentation from our Guest Speaker, Niall Williams, a member of the NZ Blackfern Sevens team who won silver at the Rio Olympics. We congratulate all award winners and a special mention to our MCs for the evening: Ariona Ieremia and Muri Martell for doing a stellar job. What a memorable occasion.

We cheered Christian Baledrokadroka - Pasifika recipient and Te Miringa Panapa - Maori recipient in the inaugural Principal’s Awards. In addition, other top awards were presented to: Georgia Lambert - Maori Leadership trophy and Christian Baledrokadroka - Pasifika Leadership Trophy and the Awhinamai award.

A hearty congratulations to all of our recipients.

NOTE: More congratulations and celebrations of our Awards Evening will be shared in the upcoming school newsletter.

Our Annual Sports Awards were held on the 20th October with a dinner in Nga Puawaitanga.

NZQA

DERIVED GRADES A student who has been disadvantaged because of a temporary impairment or a non-permanent disability, close to or during an examination, which has prevented attendance or affected performance in the examination, may apply to NZQA for Derived Grade.- A Derived Grade is where NZQA takes your Term 3 Exam results or authentic topic tests (proper tests done under exam conditions) to substitute as your external examination result.- NZQA require that all applications must be made through Mr Mitchell (NZQA liaison)- Mr Mitchell is available as follows - During the examination period Mr Mitchell will be available each day in the NZQA liaison office (located upstairs in the Atrium) from 11am to 12 pm and 2:30 pm to 3:10 pm. - Alternatively, you can make an appointment by contacting the school office. They will take your name and Mr Mitchell will contact you to organise an appointment.- NZQA require you to complete a Derived Grade form (available only from Mr Mitchell) and provide documented evidence from a suitably

qualified professional (e.g., doctor in the case of illness) of the serious disadvantage.- NZQA recommend where possible that students still sit their examinations and then apply for a derived grade. The better of the two grades (derived and actual) will be taken as your final result if your application is successful.- All completed applications must be submitted to Mr Mitchell by Monday 5th December.

INTERNAL ASSESSMENTGrade Appeals: Monday 31st October is the last day you can appeal against any reported grades.

Handing Work in after the stated deadlineIf you are handing in work after an assessment deadline then you must submit this to the student office and complete the signing in process. The school will take no responsibility for late work not submitted in this manner.
