Tackling ChildhoodObesity: NewAdvertising Rules toProtect Children fromUnhealthy Eating

The government has outlined new restrictions on advertising unhealthy foods applying to online and on television at certain times.

Following a public consultation, these regulations will come into effect at the end of next year to introduce a 9pm watershed for advertisements of foods which are high in fat, salt, and sugar (HFSS). The restrictions will apply to businesses with 250 or more employees that make and/or sell HFSS products. This means small and medium sized business will be unaffected.

The government is targeting only larger businesses as they recognise smaller contributors in the industry are among those most effected by the pandemic and may rely on online media as the primary means of advertising to potential customers.

The effects of COVID-19 aren’t exclusively felt by businesses, however. The pandemic has proven the significance of highlighting the

importance of tackling obesity as it has increased the number of at-risk children to severe diseases. With an estimated 2.9 billion child HFSS TV impacts and 11 billion impressions online during 2019 in the UK, the health of children across the UK under these restrictions will be improved drastically. It is projected the change shall create a reduction of 7.2 billion calories from children’s diets per year. This over the coming years could reduce cases of obesity in children by more than 20,000.

These new rules will restrict paid-for advertising of HFSS foods as well as applying to both TV and UK on-demand programmes as part of the government’s ongoing commitment to tackling unhealthy eating habits at the source.

The government is taking a large stride in tackling obesity in children and are committed to working alongside the industry to ensure a smooth transition into these new restrictions.

The tightening supply has been occurring for many months now, leading to many fish and chip shops removing haddock from their menus and temporarily switching to alternative species or increasing their own prices to match the supply shortage.

The current shortage is caused primarily by fishing vessels reaching their industry set quota earlier in the year comparative to standard years, as there has been an increase in demand

due to takeaways booming during COVID. This combined with restaurants reopening in Europe and the US in recent months has caused a surge in demand for haddock despite vessels being unable to match said demand.

To add to the strain on the haddock supply, due to strained relations between the US and China, the US shall no longer be sourcing haddock from China. This exacerbates the strain put on frozen at sea fish.

The haddock that is getting supplied to businesses is also smaller in portion size comparative to the fish and chip industry standard. This has meant that larger, more in demand, sizes of haddock were further put under strain.

The vessels that are still going out to catch fresh produce are not going as far out to sea as they can make the same money from the smaller fish caught closer to harbours. This wouldn’t normally be the case, however there are fewer vessels to compete with currently.

The only reprieve offered to those whom rely on haddock sales is that VAT for the hospitality industry is currently set at 5% (down from 20%) due to the setback COVID has caused for the sector. The supply strain is set to end when the new quotas for fishing vessels will reset on the 1st of September. Until then, businesses will continue to struggle through the course of this summer.

Haddock prices are currently on the rise, reaching between a 25-30% increase over recent weeks.
