The Clerk retiresSo, it’s time to retire. And, yes, I amlooking forward to it! Being a clerk at aparish council like Ruddington is one of themost varied jobs you can have. I waswarned by my predecessor that it rangedfrom drafting budgets to picking up dogpoo; I have, so far, avoided the latter! Ihave really enjoyed the variety of work –no two days are remotely the same and Inever quite know what I will be up to whenI arrive at work.

I have also dealt with a variety of people, situations and approaches. One thing I cansay with certainty is that the staff atRuddington Parish Council are the verybest. I would like to thank them for all thehard work, skill and dedication they put in.I am sure that my successor, Claire, willcome to rely on them as much as I have.

I am proud of all that Ruddington ParishCouncil delivers to the local community:providing the facilities for football, dancing, cricket, brownies, guides, slimming clubs, bowls, yoga, the VillageGreen, tai chi, coffee and lunch clubs, babygroups, allotments, playing fields, cemetery, car parks (next to the Co-op andThe White Horse Inn), the community bus,Christmas and Summer Fayres…and muchmore.

I’d like to thank everyone involved with allthese groups and activities which give somuch to the community – organisers, councillors and participants, but above allthe staff. I wish you all the very best.

Gary Long

Editor’s note:‘Gary has, during his time in Ruddington, seen many changes - both in the workingof the Parish Council and in outside events.

And he leaves with our thanks and verybest wishes for a long and happyretirement.’

Branwell – theforgotten Brontë

The only son of the Reverend PatrickBrontë, Branwell was once dubbed ‘thefamily genius,’ but did not rise to fame likehis sisters – in fact, quite the opposite. Hisartistic career and subsequent jobopportunities all failed.

Commemorating the 200th anniversary ofhis birth, a talk by Dr Claire O'Callaghanwill explore what went wrong for thistroubled young man, who died a year afterJane Eyre was published, ‘without knowingthat his sister had published a word’.

Claire lives in Ruddington and lectures inVictorian literature at Brunel University,London. She is currently writing a bookabout the Brontës.

The event takes place in the Chapel at theFramework Knitters Museum on Friday 19May at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 and are available from theMuseum, or phone Kathy on 0115 9845375.

The Battle of Rorkes Drift –the ‘Ruddington Connection’

On 23 January 1879, the mission stationat Rorkes Drift, Kwa-Zulu Natal in SouthAfrica was repeatedly and robustlyattacked by 3,000 to 4,000 Zuluwarriors, hot-foot from their crushingdefeat of the British at the Battle ofIsandlwana.

Over many hours, the mission stationwas successfully defended by little over100 soldiers from the 24th(Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot. Theferocious battle has gone down inhistory as no fewer than 11 VictoriaCrosses (the British Army's highestaward for valour) were awarded to the

defenders – all of coursecommemorated in the classic film‘Zulu,’ starring Michael Caine asCommanding Officer LieutenantGonville Bromhead.

The film ‘Zulu’ represents the 24thRegiment of Foot as a Welsh regiment, when their county designation wasWarwickshire until 1881 and onlyaround 15% of the soldiers defendingthe mission station were in fact Welsh.Three soldiers from the 24th Regimentwho fought at and survived the battle(James Marshall, Caleb Wood andRobert Tongue) are buried in the oldShaw Street cemetery in Ruddington.

Other local connections include asoldier killed at Rorkes Drift who isburied in another Nottinghamcemetery, and Lieutenant GonvilleBromhead being schooled in Newark.

From 12 noon on Friday 16 June, ABFThe Soldiers' Charity – the BritishArmy's national charity since 1944 – willbe hosting a lunch and presentationabout the battle for Rorkes Drift at StPeter’s Rooms in Ruddington. Thepresentation, titled ‘The Ghosts ofRorkes Drift,’ will be given by CharlesAikenhead, the owner of the RorkesDrift Hotel adjacent to the battlefield inSouth Africa.

Tickets are £25 per person, includinglunch, and are available from JanetBritland, ABF The Soldiers' Charity, EastMidlands. Call 0115 957 2103 or [email protected].

Pasta shop onEasthorpe Street

Further to our request in the Marchedition of the Vilage Newsletter formemories of the former pasta shop onEasthorpe Street, we received thefollowing response from Ruth Sharpe.

‘I now live in West Yorkshire and readthe Village Newsletter via my brother, who still lives in Ruddington and thenmy parents, who now live close to me.

Both my Mum and I recall the pastashop on Easthorpe Street, as it was atreat to get decent, home-made pasta, especially in the early 1990s.

I had left home by then, but on my tripsback to Ruddington, I would make surethat I went to the pasta shop, partly formyself and partly for orders for lasagneto take back to friends!

I particularly liked the sweet pasta, e.g.perhaps strawberry flavoured. Apartfrom the shop on Easthorpe Street, Ihave rarely seen sweet pasta soldanywhere since, other than in specialistdelicatessens.

I know the shop was only there for acouple of years or so, but my Mum, myfriends and myself all enjoyed it while itwas there.

We certainly remember it, as it was sounusual and to be fair, I have not comeacross another specialist pasta shop onmy travels since.’

Ruth Sharpe, Batley, West Yorkshire

Wildflowers of RushcliffeOver the years, the pressures fromagriculture and development havemeant that the rich wildflowermeadows of previous generations havebecome a rarer sight. Ironically, one sitewhere a lot of this floral heritage isprotected is an abandoned railwaycutting just outside Ruddington. Soimportant is this site that over 35 yearsago, it was stopped from becoming alandfill site, declared a Site of SpecialScientific Interest (SSSI) and bought byRushcliffe Borough Council with helpfrom the World Wildlife Fund.

Wilwell Farm Cutting is now a naturereserve that’s leased to and managedby Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust, aspart of its network of sites across thewhole of Nottinghamshire.

There will be an Open Day at WilwellFarm Cutting on Saturday 3 June, whenyou can come along and see some ofRushcliffe’s fabulous wildlife heritage. Aprogramme of guided walks withGordon the Warden will look at thesite’s varied display of summerwildflowers around the site, starting at

10am, 11:30am, 1:30pm, and 3pm. Thisis part of a wider programme of wildlifewalks and visits being run in theRushcliffe area by volunteers, on behalfof Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust. Formore details, including a downloadablefact sheet about Wilwell Farm Cutting, please visit www.southnottswildlife.org.uk and look under recentposts

The nature reserve is located on theB680 road between Ruddington andWilford (NG2 7UT), with the entrancetrack and signpost on the left as youapproach the ring road bridge fromRuddington. Parking is available or youcan take the NCT 3 bus to the WilfordIndustrial Estate stop just past thebridge.
