It is with a great deal of grief that the American people try to deal with this senseless waste of life at a time when we should be celebrating life rather than death. With the propensity of mass shootings in many varied types of public places we are faced with a dilemma. What should Southminster Presbyterian Church do to protect ourselves and our visitors? This led me to consider what we should do if there ever was some type of disaster, either an aggressive shooter, or some other type of disaster. With that in mind, I began to do some research. I discovered that we should begin with the instructions airlines give their passengers. And this advice is good for the church, or wherever you might be, particularly public places. Let me begin… 1. Wherever you find yourself, identify two readily accessible exits. Many times exits are boldly marked, and other exits are what one might call “soft” exits. For example, if you are in a restaurant, there is usually an exit through the kitchen. Ordinarily this is not for use by regular citizens, but by kitchen staff only. But in an emergency – use it!! Here at Southminster, we have exits that are readily marked, such as in the sanctuary and the Fellowship Hall. We also have an exit through the kitchen which many people regularly use. 2. In an emergency, please use the nearest available exit. If the emergency is an active shooter, move to an exit away from the shooter. Try to take others with you, although your main concern should be yourself. 3. If you are unable to use an exit due to mobility issues or being blocked by the shooter, try to find a secure place to hide. Also attempt to secure the entrances of the room before the shooter comes in, if that is possible. 4. If it is impossible to exit safely, and if it is impossible to hide (shelter in place), the third option is to attack the shooter with whatever weapons that can be improvised. This includes fire extinguishers, full soda cans, canes, or anything else that is available. Shooters are planning to be in control of the situation and when that control disappears, they either tend to flee or are disoriented sufficiently so that they lose the advantage. I write this article so that you can begin to plan for your safety. Shooters are drawn to places where people gather. Our parking lot is filled on Sundays and many other times of the week. It may be difficult to determine where in the building people are located, but you can be certain they will be drawn to the sanctuary. And so, friends, be safe. Be prepared. And care for yourself and those around you. Shalom, Marvin L. Groote The church office will be closed on Monday, September 2nd for the Labor Day holiday. We will be open the rest of the week during normal hours. Sunday School for children will resume on Sept. 8 th at 9:30 a.m.

Friends, As I write this article, the news continues to be filled with the after effects of the mass shootings in Dayton and El Paso. Let me begin…

Shalom,

Marvin L. Groote

We are all excited about World Communion Sunday for this year. On October 6, we will be worshiping with the CCC congregation in the Fellowship Hall. We will begin worship there at 10:30 am. Pastor Groote will be preaching. Communion for World Communion Sunday will be by intinction.

The CCC congregation normally takes their offering via a box at the rear of their sanctuary (Fellowship Hall) and we have agreed to follow their practice. The regular Southminster offering will be identified by our offering envelopes. For those who normally place cash in the offering, additional envelopes will be available for identification purposes.

World Communion Sunday is also the day when the Peace and Global Witness Offering will be taken. The CCC congregation has been invited to also partake in this special offering. These gifts will be identified by the special envelopes identifying the gift inside for the Peace and Global Witness Offering. You are encouraged to participate.

Normally on the first Sunday of the month we would send our loose offering to Crosslines. Because of this special service we will take the loose offering on October 13 for the Crosslines offering.

Thank you,

Pastor Groote and Kathy Miller
