Pastor’s Corner                                               Rev. Samuel Loterte,  IMPORTANT DATES:

Fourth Sunday of Easter, April 25, 2010

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Peace! Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. We also celebrate World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Our theme for this year is, "WE ARE GOD'S PEOPLE." Let us all be united in prayer to carry out the mission of Jesus, our Good shepherd. Let us also pray for one another that we may be strengthened in the particular vocation God has called us. The National Coalition for Church Vocations (NCCV) has this to say, "As we celebrate this feast we pray for fidelity to our vocation. The church invites us to honor the vocation of all Christians given at baptism. May we who have dedi-cated our lives to God through the vocation of marriage, priesthood, diaconate, consecrated life, and the single life remain faithful to our commitments. May those who are discerning their life vocation listen to the grace of God to guide them.

God bless you, Fr. Samuel Loterte, SSS

Prayer for the Week   Generous God, you show us the way that leads to everlasting life. Through baptism you have called us to proclaim the Good news.

Bless and strengthen those who have made a commitment of ser-vice in the Church.

Guide and give wisdom to those discerning their vocation. Enrich our Church with dedicated married and single people, with deacons, priests, and with people in consecrated life.

Filled with your Holy Spirit we ask this blessing that we, your people, may follow Jesus, our Good Shepherd, now and always. Amen.

As a youngster in the 1950s, serving Mass in my home parish, I was al-ways excited when a Franciscan priest who grew up in our neighborhood came home for a visit. He’d become a foreign missionary, and I loved to hear his sto-ries of different lands and peoples. He inspired me to consider the priesthood, and a vocation to the Franciscans. But I never actually became a foreign missionary. My Christian life—like that of most Catholics I know—is usually a lot less glamorous. My “mission field” is the inner-city parish where I’m pastor, and the broadcasting and web-casting world, where I’m part of what Pope John Paul the Second called “the new evangelization.” Your “mission field” may be your home and family, your daily work, or your school. So today, when we hear the exciting adventures of Paul and Barnabas in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles, we may wonder: How can we answer the call from Jesus to “go out and preach to all nations”? One way is to support missionaries we may know personally by our prayers and financial help. We can also match their zeal in our own witness to Christ, and sharing our faith with others where appropriate. Let our attitude be that of the Good Shepherd, whose care for us is proclaimed in today’s Gospel. “Sunday Soundbite” for St. Anthony Messenger Press, on the Web at FranciscanRadio.org.

This event will start at 7:00 am with registration and coffee hour followed by a rosary procession and coronation of the Blessed Mother. There will be a Eucharist Celebration and opportunities for faith enrichment for the whole family. After that, some refreshments will be served with varieties of Filipino dishes and desserts donated by members of the parish. To finalize the celebra-tion, there will be entertainment with different Filipino folkdances, singing, and much more. There is no admission and the entire community is invited to attend. Hope to see you there! For more information, call Christina Ranan, Coordinator at 640-4180 or Chrislyn Villena, Co-coordinator at 935-1465.

“The Church is called to proclaim the gift of life, to serve life, and to promote a culture of life.   The proclamation of life, life in abundance, must be the heart of the new evangelization.  For true life – our salvation – can only be found in the reconciliation, freedom, and love which are  God’s gracious gift.”       Pope Benedict XVI, Homily at Votive Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, April 19, 2008

A big mahalo to all who made this year’s Confirmation a wonderful event. A very special thank you to Fr. Marc Alexander and members of the Religious Education board who helped with preparing the meeting room for the recep-tion following Mass.

Bearers of the Light program held at Sacred Heart Pahoa  “Bearers of the Light: A Diocesan Program for Catechist Formation and Certi-fication” was held at Sacred. Heart Parish in Pahoa on Saturday, April 17. The Presider of the program was Mrs. Bonnie Boquer from St. Jude Parish, Oahu. Among the 17 participants from the East Hawaii Vicariate, 9 were from St. Joseph Parish in Hilo. Members from St. Joseph included: Charlette Collard, Sr. Lisa Chettri, Teresa Sullivan, Joy Panem, Ruth Forbes, Lusinda, Leah, Philo, Liberty Albano, and David Wilson. Carol Denis and Chrislyn Villena along with members from the Young Adult program joined for the Adult Cate-chesis Program. A companion booklet on “Roles of the Catechist” along with a DVD was given to all participants. The animator dealt with all the topics of the booklet through video presentation and discussion. The insights shared by the participants enriched everyone. Through this program catechists come to realize that they are called by the Lord to be a Teacher/companion, a powerful storyteller, leaders of prayer, and giving witness for justice to those in faith formation. Dear Parishioners,

I write this after making the retreat in Syracuse, NY, with Mother Marianne. It was a wonderful experience until Sunday morning after Mass. I attended the Mass as everyone, choosing not to concelebrate. After the Mass, I stayed in my pew for silent reflection in front of the shrine of Mother Marianne. The last Sister to leave the chapel came to me and said, "You will need to leave now, for security reasons, you know." I looked at her in disblief and stated, "But, Sister, I am here on retreat." She told me that it was her responsibility to vacate the church. Only then did I introduce myself as Fr. Joe Hennen from the Diocese of Honolulu. The poor woman was shattered! It was poor of me not to introduce myself much earlier. She was simply doing her job. The rest of the silent, reflective retreat was a gift from God. And, I left a prayer petition at the shrine for all of you and our wonderful parish. I have had all my blood work with the doctors. On Tuesday, April, 20, I will get the results of the tests and the indication if the leukemia is still in remission or if it is growing. I appreciate your prayers. You are in my mind, my heart, and my love.......Mahalo! Fr. Joe PS My Gratitude again to Fr. Joe Carroll for covering for me!
