The third complete offering of Session IV Blended Training was completed by 29 students. This training was inspired by a desire to decrease the waiting time for Session IV training and to allow students to be home for some of the training instead of being away from home for 4 weeks. 28 courses were delivered online over 16 weeks. Every two weeks, two classes were offered to enrolled CHA’s who were supported in their learning by their clinics, as well as by ANTHC CHAP Instructor, Tori Schmidt, PA-C. In addition to interactive online materials, homework, and quizzes, students had focused online discussions with each other. All courses meet the Basic Training Curriculum objectives, are written by Anchorage CHAP Instructors and developed by the Distance Learning Network (DLN) Instructional Design team. After completion of the DLN classes, students participated in clinical, hands-on skills, either in Anchorage or another training center. Improvements continue to be made to these classes based on student and instructor feedback. Development of a new blended delivery (part clinical skills, part DLN) for a combined Session I and Session II is currently in progress with

planned completion date mid-2017. The courses are being carefully developed to take advantage of the best of both the distance and face to face formats. PreSession is also being developed in a DLN format. Stay tuned, 2017 will be full of new offerings! Questions or comments? Contact [email protected]

Coping Skills Seminar

A Coping Skills seminar will be held September 27-29, 2016, at ANTHC. The course will be based on the class developed by the Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation Community Health Aide Program to assist CHA/Ps in identifying and coping with job related stress. The course will bring together health aides and facilitators from around the state for three days of facilitated discussion and activities. Topics covered will include “Caregiver Stressors,” “Compassion Fatigue,” “Balancing Mind and Body,” “Compartmentalization,” and “Loss &

Grieving.” Team building and self-care activities will be incorporated throughout the course. The CHAP Directors have identified Health Aide retention as a strategic priority and YKHC reports that this seminar has provided CHA/Ps with the skills necessary to recognize and help cope with job related stress. For more information on the course, go to www.akchap.org.

CHAP Certification Rates

The Community Health Aide Program Certification Board (CHAPCB) would like to take this opportunity to recognize Tribal Health Organizations for achieving the Community Health Aide/Practitioner (CHA/P) certification rate of 90% or greater as of June 2016. The overall certification rate as of June 2016 for CHA/Ps is at 86% statewide. The Board recognizes the hard work and dedication it takes to achieve and maintain this level of certification. We would like to congratulate each organization for this accomplishment and commend them for their commitment and work in certifying their community health aides. The Board collects CHA/P employment counts twice a year in January and June. The goal is to determine and plan future training needs for health aides in all organizations, to measure our progress and to identify areas that require attention.

On July 19-20, 2016, an eCHAM Super User Course was provided. There were 10 attendees representing six tribal health care organizations: Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation, Council of Athabascan Tribal Government, Norton Sound Health Corporation, North Slope Borough, Southcentral Foundation, and Maniilaq. The skills reviewed included: “eCHAM Core Competencies,” “How to Use the iPad,” “How to Trouble-Shoot the iPad,” and “How to Trouble-Shoot the Website.” There was a focus on how to manage up the CHAM, support the users of this tool, and how to access its backups: iCHAM, ePub, and PDF. There was an in-class

demonstration provided by attendees, which showed they could find the resources, review the Core Competencies with someone new, and how to ask appropriate questions to help someone trouble shoot if they are face-to-face. To get a better understanding of the error messages that might come up, the class was able to reproduce the error messages to see what causes them, and then be able to address them. Jump drives were provided for each organization to take home which had copies of the training videos, and a PowerPoint to assist in training if needed. Each person also took the time to build a clinical guide of what the clinic resources are for the eCHAM, including what wireless network to connect to, who the IT contact person is, and when to contact the eCHAM Program Administrator. A post course survey was completed by attendees. Feedback indicated the instructor was very knowledgeable, and the lengths of course and delivery methods were good. There was initially some concern that the timing of the course in July would create some challenges for attendance. However, all attendees showed up for both days of training and received certificates of completion.

8th Annual DHAT Graduation and Transition Ceremony

Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortiums Dental Health Aide Therapist Program hosted their 8th annual graduation and transition ceremony, June 3, 2016. The ceremony is becoming a cherished annual tradition, filled with supporters and family of our students who complete the two year journey to becoming a mid-level dental provider and bringing access to oral health care back to their communities. At the ceremony, ANTHC, the University of Washington MEDEX program and Iḷisaġvik College announced enhancements to the DHAT educational program. In 2017, the program will be academically affiliated with Iḷisaġvik College, Alaska’s only accredited Tribal college, and will offer both a certificate and an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Health Therapy, allowing students to apply for scholarships and federal student aid. The DHAT graduates heard remarks from several guest speakers including: Diane Kaplan, President and CEO of the Rasmuson Foundation; Dr. Christopher Halliday, Dean of the Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health, A.T. Still University; Terry Scott, Director of the University of Washington MEDEX program; and Pearl Brower, President of Iḷisaġvik College. The speakers congratulated them on their achievements and commitment to Tribal dental health. The audience included the students’ family and friends, along with numerous ANTHC partners who have supported the DHAT Educational Program. This was the eighth graduation ceremony for the ANTHC DHAT Educational Program, which brings dental health closer to home for rural communities. Two students from rural Alaska graduated: Summer Lynch from Haines, AK sponsored by SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium; and Jaslyn Wren from Iliamna, AK sponsored by Southcentral Foundation. The new graduates will begin their preceptorships to begin the journey towards applying for DHAT Certification from the Community Health Aide Program

Certification Board. This marks another year of history for the DHAT Program, and a whole new future and possibilities for two Alaskan Native providers who will give back to their communities. Seven students were also granted their transition certificates highlighting the completion of one year in the Anchorage-based program. The white coat ceremony also acknowledged their transition to becoming a DHAT student provider during the second year of the program, which is based in Bethel. Transitioning students are: Dominic Comerate, Jr., Deidre Dayton and Tiffany George, sponsored by Tanana Chiefs Conference; Naomi Petrie, sponsored by Confederate Tribes of Coos Bay, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians; Allison Ayapan and Hannah Howard, sponsored by Yukon Kuskokwim Health Corporation; and Shonna Wheeler, sponsored by Eastern Aleutian Tribes.
