Learning Corner

Potters Thatchers Maths this week has been focussing on addition within 20 by combining groups and counting on as a strategy. We have been using the silent teacher method where pupils have to use the visualiser to explain how they will solve addition calculations. Potters have been hot seating the characters in Rapunzel and writing letters from Rapunzel asking to be rescued. There has been some fantastic shield and crown making ready for our Kings and Queens day.

The words 'can we write it now?' are music to my ears. Thatchers have been building up to writing their own legends. I cannot wait to read them once they're completed. We've been using a range of conjunctions to say more in our writing. 'But' and 'although' have proved challenging. Do ensure you use them regularly and point them out in stories when you encounter them at home.

Weavers Foresters In maths Weavers have started to further develop their understanding of fractions starting with unit and non-unit fractions. Weavers have continued with their south American adventure this week, with a trip to Ecuador. We found out it is famous for its chocolate and bananas and the Galapagos Islands. The children produced some stunning oil pastels drawings of jaguars showing they had taken on board what they had learned last week In literacy they have been leaning to create settings and are using the 'power of 3' to enhance their paragraphs.

This week, we have finished our learning in English on 'The Arrival' by Shaun Tan by writing a narrative of the story, from the main character's perspective. We worked hard to show description and emotion. In maths, year six have been revising imperial and metric measures and year five have been looking at decimal place value. We can now convert decimal numbers into fractions. In history, we learnt about British navigator, Sir Francis Drake and his incredible voyage around the world. We also decorated our Greek pots this week in Art and they look fantastic!

Dear parents,

World book day was a huge success last week – it was lovely to see many dressed up and so many different characters and ‘objects’ from a variety of books made out of recycled materials – well done to the winners – Seth and Alys in Potters and Thatchers and to Libby and Meredith in KS2!

Today, we invited the children to come in to school dressed in Sports Kit for Sports Relief – thank you for your £1 donations – we raised £68.15.

Well done to the swimmers in KS2 who have been practising their length swimming and building their stamina for swimming 25m in all strokes. The annual swimming gala is next Wednesday and I look forward to cheering the squad on! (Sorry no spectators allowed)

We wish Mrs Meale a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing her back at school soon. Mrs Woodley and myself went to a conference on Thursday – look who we met!

Enjoy the weekend,

Mrs Ilic

Coronavirus Update: Advance warning that I will be following any advice from the Government to close

school if and when required. From discussions with various professionals I do feel that this is very likely

in the near future.

At this time, we are not sending work home if school is not attended. Can I remind you all to look at the

website for suitable links to visit, for children to write diaries, read regularly and read a variety of books,

learn times table facts and of course the Homework Power Projects can be completed fully.

Coronavirus - Advice for parents/guardians You should not be unduly worried about the possibility of your children catching the Coronavirus. There is no reason why your children should not continue to attend their early years, school or further education setting as normal. We recognise that some families or children may be planning to travel to China during the forthcoming half term period. If so, please refer to the FCO’s latest travel advice via the link below

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china

What action you can take? A UK wide campaign has been launched to provide clear advice on how to slow the spread of Coronavirus. Please help to support the campaign which promotes basic hygiene practices, such as regularly washing hands and always sneezing into a tissue, to stem the spread of viruses.

Latest information and advice can also be found at https://www.gov.uk/coronavirus
