LATROBE HIGH SCHOOL
Department of Education
Issue No. 8 18 June 2015
Principal’s Report LGBTI Information
Your son or daughter may have mentioned the topic of LGBTI students after our
last assembly. I explained that LGBIT was an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transsexual and intersex. I presented some data that informed students about
how LGBTI students may feel in our school. This is some of the data I presented:
Approximately 10% of high school students across Australia are same sex
attracted (equating to 42 students at LHS)
3% of high school students believe that they may be transsexual (equating to 12
students at LHS)
50% of all bullying and harassment strongly correlates to an individual’s sexual
orientation or perceived sexual orientation
20% of transgender people and 15.7% of homosexual and bisexual people
report suicidal thoughts.
When talking with students, a large percentage inform me that they would feel
more comfortable talking with their friends about being a LGBTI student than
their family. They also mentioned that they found language, such as ‘That is gay’,
an issue and something that should not be tolerated at school. I asked all students
to think about their language and make sure that derogatory words associated
with LGBTI people disappear from our vocabulary. I want us to ‘lead the charge’
on equality and work together to make Latrobe High School a better place for all
students to be. Students are to be congratulated for making positive decisions
with regards to their vocabulary; we are already noticing an improvement.

Attendance
At the end of Term 1, our whole-school attendance was 94%. It has now dropped to 92% during Term 2,
with the state average for Secondary Schools being 88%. I am pleased that we are tracking above the
state average; however, I am concerned that our attendance data is on the downward trend. For students
to learn and reach their full potential, they must be at school. I have inserted a table that demonstrates
the impact of being absent from school.
I would like to thank parents for building resilience in their children, making sure they attend school every
day and only keeping them home when they are sick.
Mid-year Reports
Mid-year reports will be mailed home on Thursday 2 July. Parents will receive comments and an A to E
rating for English, History, Geography, Maths, Science and Health and Physical Education. Ratings and
comments have also been provided for all Personal Interest subjects. The majority of our teachers have
had approximately 200 reports to write over the past few weeks. If it takes a teacher 15 minutes to
complete one report, it would equate to 50 hours of work outside their planning and teaching time. I
know that parents and students will appreciate their effort.
Parent teacher meetings will be held in the first week of Term 3 and a ten minute time slot is available
with each teacher. We will also make available up to two Don College staff will be available on
Wednesday 22 July from 4:00pm to 6:00pm by appointment for Grade 10 parents and students.
Tuesday 21 July, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
Wednesday 22 July, from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. (Don College staff 4:00pm to 6:00 pm)
Thursday 23 July, from 3:30pm to 4:30pm.
To make a booking, please contact the main office with a list of the teachers you would like to see, as of
Friday 19 June.
Stage Development
Our new ‘Stage Development’ is progressing nicely, with hand-over currently set for Thursday July 7. We
are fortunate that the Department has allocated additional funds to have the internal walls and ceiling of
the Gymnasium painted. Our first whole-school assembly will take place in the Gymnasium during the
third week of Term 3. During this assembly we will acknowledge and farewell Philip McKenzie.
$10,000,000 Redevelopment
We are extremely excited that Latrobe High has been allocated $10,000,000 over the next two financial
years, with two million dollars in the 2015-16 financial year and eight million dollars in the 2016-17
financial year. On Monday 22 June, a member from the School Association, John Febey (School Business
Manager), Trudy Pearce (General Manager of LSNR), Peter Heathcote (Project Officer) and I will form a
panel to commission an architect. A number of architectural firms have placed a tender and will be
interviewed on Monday. I envisage that the successful applicant will start work at the start of Term 3.
The initial process will include revisiting and making changes to the Master Plan and then working on
detailed plans for the construction stage. I have included a copy of the original Master Plan for your
perusal. We know that parts of the original plan will change. However, the key elements will still be the
same.
I would like to acknowledge the following people for their support in making our vision a reality: Philip
McKenzie, School Association Members, Current Mayor Peter Freshney, former Mayor Michael Gaffney
MLC, politicians from Braddon and Lyons, Facility Services Personnel, General Manager LSNR Trudy
Pearce and Minister for Education Jeremy Rockliff.

GRADE 9 NEWSLETTER
The last few weeks of Term Two have been very busy. Students have been working on class assignments as
well as selecting their Personal Interest choices for the second part of the year. If any student has not yet
entered their choices into Survey Monkey, I suggest they see Mr Karafilis as soon as possible.
Congratulations to the students, listed below, who have received strength awards over the past few weeks:
Connor Reed Delaney, Rachel Bentley, Claire Thomas, Eve Bell, Katy Danos, Natalie Flack, Kodie
Broomhall, Raine Glashower, Brett Haines and Zander Bellchambers.
Over the past four weeks, I have been disappointed with the wearing of school uniform. Many students are
wearing inappropriate jackets and tops, as well as trousers. Latrobe High School prides itself on the wearing
of uniform, and wearing it with pride. If there is an issue regarding the purchase of school uniform, please
contact me on the school’s phone number.
Next term, we will begin having some conversations regarding expectations of those considering applying
for Leadership. Students need time to prepare themselves as this process happens very quickly, and
students need to be aware of what is included in the process. Application for the position of Leader takes
place during Term Three, with candidate speeches happening early Term Four. We have some exciting
times ahead.
If you need to contact me regarding any school related issue, please contact me via email or the school’s
phone number.

WRITER OF THE MONTH
In the last assembly we announced the first two winners for ‘Writer of the Month’. Congratulations go to
Charlotte Taylor and Darcy Miller. Charlotte won the creative writing section and Darcy was nominated
by more than one staff member for her writing in a number of subject areas. Both girls received a fifteen
dollar gift voucher from The Devonport Bookshop, as well as a certificate for their efforts.
The writing task for this month is to create a fifty word story. All entries must be in by the end of term.
The winners for the month of May will be announced in the next assembly.
Wendy Leonard
Below is an excerpt from Charlotte’s short story.
SOMEWHERE ONLY I KNOW
My heart’s banging in my chest like a drum, hard and painful, giving me the feeling like my chest is going to
explode. My face is throbbing with fear and sweat. Huffing and puffing… my breathing becomes faster
with ever second I run. Going through my head I’m wondering if I’ll make it to my family waiting at the
end of the road in the far distance, rushing me to speed up and run for my life.
“Run faster, run faster!” my Mum, Dad and my sister yell out to me, “and don’t stop till you’ve reached
us!”
The more they continue to yell out to me, the more panic I feel overpowering me.
My legs are becoming numb, I can’t feel anything from my waist down to my toes. I look down to check if
my legs and feet are ok. All I see is a tiny blood stream running down my ankles to my toes and bunches
of little bruises covering my knees. It’s no longer me trying to force myself to run… my legs are now
working by themselves uncontrollably.
I can feel my hair swishing and swaying side to side with the rush as I run.
My legs start to slow down and the slower they go, the more ache I feel.
“Just keep running, keep moving forward… eyes on the prize, eyes on the prize,” I repeat to myself,
squinting at my family in the distance.
With all the dust and dirt on the side of the road blowing at my face, the harder it is to see where I am
heading.
I force myself to keep running, moving my legs and feet as fast as I can while the sounds of shooting be-
hind me race through my mind.
I look behind me and see a group of dark clothed people in leather and chains shooting towards me and
my family. I can hear them all screaming at us but it’s hard to hear what they are saying.
I try to ignore it and continue to run.

INTER- HIGH CROSS COUNTRY
Wednesday June 3 saw Hellyer College and Geoff Taylor from PCYC support the first ever Inter High Cross
Country Carnival to be held at Shorewell Reserve in Burnie. For the last twenty years the Inter High Carnival
has been held at Ulverstone on a flat course along the road and beach. The new course was challenging, as
the track was similar to the Mud Run course without the obstacles. Approximately 700 competitors from 16
High Schools along the North West Coast enjoyed the uneven terrain. Latrobe High School finished Fourth
Overall. We are proud of all members of the Inter High Team and would like to congratulate the top twenty
finishers.

SPORTING ROUND UP
Netball LHS 1 – Coach Tahli Flack
On Saturday June 13 our team played Leighland Christian School at the Spreyton Netball Centre. We played
well as a team and tired out hardest. It was a one-sided game. We scored a few goals but at the end of the
game Leighland was the winner. Written by Claire Thomas.
NETBALL LHS 2 – COACH KIM GILLIES
Over the past eight weeks we have achieved five wins and only three losses, which has put us into third
place on the ladder. During the past couple of games we have started to bond, work well as a team and
settle into positions. We are looking forward to the rest of the season. Written by Arabella Gillies.
FOOTBALL 9/10
High School Footy this year has been a walk in the park. Many people, each game, kicked multiple goals as
we continue to win by large margins. Our 7/8 players are playing well against older opponents. Our forward
has been kicking five goals or more per game. Written by Travis Forster.

GIRLS FOOTBALL
Our first Grade 9/10 girls football game was a great start to the season. Versing Reece High School we
took out the win with an outstanding end result of 100-13. Before the game we didn’t know what to
expect. The first quarter was the toughest for us but from there on it all went uphill for the Latrobe girls.
Some great performances from Lauren Stevenson, Emma Scott and Isabella Hardy. Considering half of our
team had never played a game of football before it was such a good sight to see them all getting in there
having a go and enjoying themselves. It seems we have a
bright season ahead of us. Well done to the Latrobe girls for
our brilliant win and all of their efforts. Written by Zoe Knight
(Captain).
U14 BOYS - COACH CALEB OVERDIJK
Played SBSC at Latrobe High School on Wednesday June 10.
The game ended in a 4 all draw. Coach Caleb Overdijk said his
team has been playing well and is continually improving.
Jayden Last scored all four gaols during this game. – Adam
Price.
U16 BOYS - COACH BARRIE MCCLYMONT
On Monday June 16 we played Leighland Christian School on
our home ground. The boys were keen to get a win on the
board, and we won 4-0. Goal scorers were Xavier McClymont,
Daniel Huddleston, Liam Slatter and Caleb Overdijk. We
played a team game. I would like to thank coach Barrie
McClymont for his work with our team so far this year.
Written by Caleb Overdijk.
U16 GIRLS - COACH RHONDA HALL
We were defeated 2-0 to Ulverstone Black last week. Our
team is working well together, continually improving each
week. We are looking forward to the rest of the season.
