From the GM

Cabramatta Confidential Issue No:49

Well summers come and gone for another year, definitely a season to remember as it brought some massive storms that caused extensive damage to our Clubhouse & golf course.

· I am pleased to report that our newly renovated roof handled the storm very well but not so much good news on the course with an estimated 40 established trees lost plus all the associated debris that came with it. As of today 8th March I believe that all the damaged trees will be finally mulched.

· I hope that the members and their guests appreciate the freshly renovated Clubhouse and surrounds. It defi-nitely gives a far greater appeal and provides more capability to handle more than one function at a time.

· The Club has recently purchased a premium quality Schibello coffee machine and now offer Schibello’s “Black Label Blend”. If you are not interested in a beverage from the bar why not try a quality coffee.

· The recent works out on the course have included the filling in of the bunker on the 6th fairway, the filling in of bunkers on the left hand side of the 3rd hole plus the removal of some plants that caused annoying delays in looking for stray balls. Apart from time delay’s these were considered high maintenance projects and will be replaced with easily maintained turf.

· For some months now you will have noticed the thinning out of trees on the bend on the 11th hole. The purpose of this is to remove the impact of the large roots that are encroaching on the 11th fairway plus eventually extend the dams surrounding the 11th green thus providing a risk and reward experience for those willing to have a go.

· Recent visitors to the Club will have noticed that the staff are now in a uniform that I believe is casual but smart and fits in with our decor.

· Upcoming events to pencil in are: Saturday 23rd April for the GOLDEN WATTLE CUP, this event is for members with handicaps of 12 and over. The week following is Saturday 30th April and we present the time honoured CABRAMATTA CUP, this is an open event for those under 11 handicap. TOMKAT ROOFING is our proud sponsor for this event and features a $1,000 first prize to the best scratch score on the day. Better start practicing!

· I will let the respective Team Managers report on the various Representative Teams, not our best results but we are competing at the highest level and from my view, we gave it our best shot and had a whole heap of fun, well done to all involved.

· Leading in to an early Easter this year, so I want to wish everyone has a safe and enjoyable break and if you have not got anything planned why not come up and enjoy our facilities, I can think of a lot worse things to do.

· Friday April 1st will see our annual CPI increase that will see most beverages rise by 20 cents. Although the increase occurs in February & August our Club only increases on April 1st in line with our Financial Year beginning.

Until the next report stay healthy!

From the Captain So much has happened around the course with the storm damage, leaving staff to do clean up work rather than everyday tasks of maintaining the course. Firstly a big thank you to the members for donating your time and helping with the storm damage clean up, your assistance is greatly appreciated. Some gardens around the course are slowly being replaced with grass or low maintenance gardens to enhance the look and avoid players spending time looking for golf balls. Bunkers on the 3rd fairway have been filled to restructure the hole to allow players to hit left and avoid going out of bounds and causing damage to houses. The bunker on the 6th has also been filled. Due to storm damage a lot of trees have been damaged and removed. Also trees have been removed on the 11th and 13th. Looking to the future, plans are in place in the next six months to plant significant trees throughout the course. As for the golf, we held a Junior Tyro 9 Hole event on Sunday, 6th March. This was a great experience for Zak, Aimee, Kimberley, Jae & Zak. They played against Bankstown and Cumberland. These juniors are a regular at the junior clinic that Matt Dowd tutors. The Junior Matchplay Final will be contested by Radovan Maric and Harrison Glenday on Saturday, 12th March. Good luck to both players. The Golden Wattle Cup for members with handicaps from 12 – 36 will be played on Saturday, 23rd April. The Cabra Cup for members & visitors with -5 to 11 handicaps will be played on Saturday, 30th April. The Cabra Cup is proudly sponsored by Tomkat Roofing. Having the two events in the same month allows all members the chance to play the course at its best. The Mixed Pennants have finished their season and were not successful in making it to the finals. The Major Pennants have shown great spirit but again not successful in the preliminary rounds, now we hope to win the relegation match to stay in Div. 1. The Ladies Major Pennants gave it their best but were not successful in winning the division. The Master Pennants start their campaign on Sunday, 1st May. As for club golf, we have the Cock O Walk qualifying coming up on Saturday, 19th March, good luck to all players. If you have a queries about the work on course, come up and see me and then I can explain the big picture for the work being carried out.

Hi Members and Guests and welcome to our March Newsletter.

JUNIOR PROGRAM

For the first time in a few years we have a Junior Squad competing in the Tyro

Shield. Our Junior clinic has been a success on Thursday afternoons and I would like

to thank Andruis for his dedicated commitment with the Juniors in helping myself

prepare the guys. This event is a 9 hole interclub match event for players aged

approximately 8 -12 years of age who are not yet ready to get an AGU handicap,

but are involved in a beginners ‘mygolf’ or ‘tyro’ program. On Sunday 6th March

our players Zac Darnell, Zac Marsh, Jae Salvatore, Aimee & Kimberly Richardson

played at Bankstown and competed very well.

In store

In store shortly will be the New PING ‘G’ Series and also the TITLEIST sm6 wedges.

If you're a Ping fan then it's time to get excited as the company has launched the

brand new G Series of woods, irons, and crossovers that are aimed at providing

more distance and forgiveness for a wide range of players. The new G irons are a

slimmed down take on a modern Ping game-improvement iron, with a thinner

topline and sole than the previous G30. The biggest change, however, is the

addition of a new “COR-Eye,” technology that activates the sole, top line, and face

to create approximately four times the amount of face flex as the previous model,

resulting in significantly more ball speed and distance.

A new alloy used to construct the clubface is approximately 40% stronger than

traditional alloy, allowing designers to save weight, which has been moved to the

perimeter of the club head for a higher MOI and forgiveness. In addition, the new

custom tuning port is connected to the sole, further helping to lower the CG for

improved launch angles.

TITLEIST VOKEY WEDGES

The next step in wedge innovation from the clear leader in the category, the new Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled 6 wedges establish a new performance standard by improving in the three key areas of wedge play: distance gapping, shot versatility and spin control.

Already the most played wedge model on the PGA Tour, Vokey SM6 wedges provide precise distance control, enhanced shot versatility, maximum spin and superior feel through the following key technologies:

A groundbreaking new Progressive Center of Gravity (CG) design aligns the CG with the impact position of each loft to produce precise distance and trajectory control with exceptional feel. Engineered using cutting-edge CAD technology, the Progressive CG is visible technology on the back of the wedge.

News from the Green Staff

Well, what a start to 2016. January was crazy to say the least, with four afternoon storm events delivering close to 300mm’s of rain for the month, not to mention the damaging winds which tore through the course leaving a trail of destruction. Close to 40 trees were brought down, some ripped in half and others just pulled out of the ground. Of course the clean-up process was long and slow, but thanks to the assistance of volunteer members we managed to tidy the course fairly well, allowing contract tree mulchers to come in and work their way through the debris.

I’m happy to say that most of the clean-up has now been completed, with a few tree stumps and root balls to be finalised. As part of the clean-up we have managed to clean the pile of branches adjacent to the maintenance facility. Once free of all debris we will plant shrubs

near the soil bay walls and turf the remainder of the site.

The constant wet conditions combined with the humidity throughout January really put our greens under stress, and to be honest they have struggled since that point. With the root system in the greens in a weak, unhealthy state after the humid wet conditions in January, we find ourselves having to water more regularly than ideal, to maintain a level

of moisture that the greens will last through the warm days.

I am now looking forward to aerating greens, with renovations are only a week away, and we can look forward to greens returning to good

condition in time for Cabra Cup.

Over the past weeks we have started to turf some fairway bare patches on the 9th, and after greens renovations we will continue to repair the remainder of patches on fairways. Ideally I would have like to have had those patches completed after the New Year’s break, but we have had a busy time since then. I would like to thank all the members who offered their time in the clean-up process, it sure made it a lot easier on

my staff. Thanks.

This was another milestone year in that for the first time membership

reached the limit figure of 450. As a result competition fields and

attendance in the Clubhouse were also at record levels. Patronage of

competitions increased by around 30% on the previous year and was the

largest in the Club’s history.

Financially, the Club was reported as being very sound with a healthy profit of £7,584 being achieved.

In addition Capital Expenditure for the year totalled £11,705.

The major focus for the year concentrated on course improvements in an endeavour to lay a

foundation that would benefit the Club in the future. The major portion of the Capital Expenditure

related to course improvements and equipment. Renovation of the tees, to provide a much larger

playing area and to overcome the problem of constant wear and tear, was nearing

completion.

Ralph and Edna were both patients in a mental hospital. One day

while they were walking past the hospital swimming pool, Ralph

suddenly jumped into the deep end.

He sank to the bottom of the pool and stayed there. Edna promptly

jumped in to save him. She swam to the bottom and pulled him out.

When the Head Nurse Director became aware of Edna’s heroic act she

immediately ordered her to be discharged from the hospital, as she

now considered her to be mentally stable.

When she went to tell Edna the news she said, 'Edna, I have good

news and bad news. The good news is you're being discharged, since

you were able to rationally respond to a crisis by jumping in and

saving the life of the person you love. I have concluded that your

act displays sound mindedness.

The bad news is, Ralph hanged himself in the bathroom with his

bathrobe belt right after you saved him. I am so sorry, but he's

dead.'

Edna replied, 'He didn't hang himself, I put him there to dry...

How soon can I go home?'

An elderly couple was having dinner one evening when the husband reached

across the table, took his wife’s hand in his and said, "Martha, soon we will be

married 50 years, and there's something I have to know. In all of these 50

years, have you ever been unfaithful to me?"

Martha replied, "Well Henry, I have to be honest with you. Yes, I've been

unfaithful to you three times during these 50 years, but always for a good

reason."

Henry was obviously hurt by his wife's confession, but said, "I never

suspected. Can you tell me what you mean by ‘good reasons?”

Martha said, “The very first time was shortly after we were married, and we

were about to lose our little house because we couldn't pay the mortgage. Do

you remember that one evening I went to see the banker and the next day he

notified you that the loan would be extended?"

Henry recalled the visit to the banker and said, "I can forgive you for that.

You saved our home, but what about the second time?"

Martha asked, "And do you remember when you were so sick, but we didn't have

the money to pay for the heart surgery you needed? Well, I went to see your

doctor one night and, if you recall, he did the surgery at no charge."

"I recall that," said Henry. "And you did it to save my life, so of course I can

forgive you for that. Now tell me about the third time."

"All right," Martha said. "So do you remember when you ran for president of

your golf club, and you needed 73 more votes?"
