It is often difficult to diagnose dyslexia before the age of sev-en as many of the signs of dys-lexia are very usual in children under seven, for example mir-ror writing or letter reversal. If we, at The Pearl, suspect dys-lexia in a child under seven, we will monitor them carefully and take further action once they reach Year 3.

Here are some indicators for possible dyslexia – again though, if a child displays any of these, it does not necessar-ily mean dyslexia – a compre-hensive assessment would be needed for that:

Children aged 4 – 7

Speaking – Persistently mispronounces words and can find it hard to find the correct word.

Phonological awareness – Misses or changes sounds in words that are heard, spoken, or read.

Reading and Spelling – Difficulty learning to sound out words for reading and spel l ing.– Relies on sight words, read-ing is slow and laborious.

Sequencing– Errors when reading – e.g. says “was” for saw; telling an

event in order

Auditory memory – Difficulty following directions, learning times tables etc.

Writing – letter or number reversal. Mirror writing.

Focus – Finds concentrating at school difficult.

Children aged 8- 11

Speaking – Persistently mispronounces words and can find it hard to find the correct word.

Phonological awareness– Misses or changes sounds in words that are heard, spoken, or read.

Reading – Slow; avoids reading; relies on sight words; guesses and makes errors.

Spelling– Poor spelling; does not retain words learnt for a spelling test; mixes up letters in words.

Writing– Avoids it; written sentences are short and poorly organised or ordered.

Auditory memory – Difficulty following or remem-bering multiple-step directions– Difficulty remembering mul-tiplication tables, phone num-bers etc.

Focus – Trouble concentrating; gets tired quickly when doing school work; loses place on a page.

Self-esteem – Increasing frustration and poor self-esteem.

Language expression– Difficulty putting ideas in words and sequencing them appropriately.

For me however, one of the biggest signs is a disparity be-tween abilities: for example, a child who is verbally able, yet cannot get ideas down on pa-per; a child who can build the most amazing Lego creations, yet cannot remember how to spell ‘very’.

For dyslexics, school can be a very challenging place. We put [rightly] so much emphasis on reading, writing and num-

ber work - the very areas dys-lexic children find challenging. However, there is hope! In today’s world, many jobs are now able to be done by ma-chine. Dyslexics possess the very qualities that machines do not have: creativity, out of the box thinking, big picture think-ing. Indeed, NASA actively seeks out dyslexic people as they have the skills that they want!

If you are interested in re-searching this area, you may like to read the following texts:

So what do you do if you think your child may be dyslexic? First of all, speak to someone in The Pearl’s inclusion team. Next steps may involve mon-itoring or an assessment car-ried out by one of the inclu-

sion team. It could be that we recommend an assessment by an educational psychologist as this is the only way to get a definitive diagnosis of dyslexia.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to speak to Mrs Barr ([email protected].

ae) If your child is dyslexic, we will offer them support to help them succeed at school but also celebrate their very spe-cial, unique talents.

Safer Routes to School

As you are aware, the health and safety of our whole com-munity always guides all of our school policies and procedures.

Thank you to the six parents who attended the meeting on traffic this week. At the meet-ing, it was decided that we would continue to pursue the necessary authorities for sup-porting developing safer routes to school.

As a first step, this week we have met with the traffic po-lice and been advised that the partial one-way system is still in place around the school site. From Sunday, school staff will be outside the school to guide cars around this system.

We have also registered with the #We Are All Police scheme. This scheme allows us to instantly report any driv-ers not abiding by the traffic laws - not something we wish to do but an unfortunate ne-cessity for safety reasons.

What do we need from you?

• Please observe the road traffic laws. It only takes one thoughtless driver to stop the system working.

• Please leave enough time to get to school without being in a rush.

• Talk to your drivers and nannies so they know about the routes around school.

• Finally, please show all of the staff the respect they deserve at all times but espe-cially when they are working so hard to keep our children safe.

Finance and Payments

Please ensure all payments are made with the correct money attached to the correct form. Payments cannot be combined in one bundle.

I wish you all a peaceful week-end,

Abigail

Mental Health Awareness#pearltalkoutloud

What an enriching week this has been! On Sunday we launched the Mental Health Awareness Week with an assem-bly to raise awareness and to highlight that mental health matters. Most of our children will be able to tell you what

COUNSELLOR’S CORNER

mental health is and why it is important to look after your mental health. We specifically focused on small and big feelings and what to do when you have big feelings. I had a few video interviews with random teachers and students to demonstration our understanding of this topic in the assembly. When I asked Jana in Year 2 what she does when she has big feelings she said that she takes three deep breaths and think of all the fun things. I think we can learn so much from our little children about being calm.

The Aldar Counsellors parent night at Al Yasmina Academy on Tuesday evening was a posi-tive event. It gave Aldar parents the opportunity to talk about and ask for guidance around meeting the wellbeing and mental health needs of their children. It demonstrates the need to belong to a community who cares and supports and this is what the Aldar Counsellors are aiming for.

Our Year 6 students had the privilege of attending a mental health talk hosted by Darkness into Light, Abu Dhabi. Maria Kelly, Chairperson and Laura Brennan, Director of Therapeutic Services and Vice-Chairperson introduced Sonia Gonzalez, Sound Healer, to our children. The children were introduced to a healing practice that cultivates emotional intelli-gence through relaxation. Ms Gonzalez used different instruments and sounds to encourage a calm and peaceful session. She also hosts week-

ly sessions at Manarat al Saadian and House of Nature for those who may be interested.

Let’s invest in our mental health by talking about our feelings and finding the time to check in with each other. Kate Middleton said that “a child’s mental health is just as important as their physical health and deserves the same quality of support” and I agree wholeheartedly with her. Make sure to talk to your children about how they are doing and spend some time really listening.

Please have a look at the Sunday parent workshop schedule as the ‘Anger’ workshop is post-poned until Term 2. It will be replaced with a workshop by our Arabic staff specifically for our Non-Native community.

Have a wonderful weekend and remember to take time to reflect on your mental health!

Warm regards,Maryke Venter – School Counsellor

ISSUE NO.31 JUNE 13TH 2019

This week in Nursery we began our inquiry into ‘Are all bears cuddly?’

We shared the story of ‘Goldi-locks and the Three Bears’, se-quenced the events and acted them out. We enjoyed using Goldilocks props as part of our enhanced provision and used some story themed charac-ter puppets in our small world play. A version of the story can be found at the following link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KndSVsY5HWM

We competed a range of fine motor activities during Funky Finger lessons. These have in-cluded threading, working with playdough, making puzzles, spooning oats, painting and much more. These activities

will prepare our arms, hands and fingers for mark making and writing. We have also en-joyed mark making on paper on the walls, floor and under the tables and also tracing, painting and chalking.

In Maths we focused on order-ing objects by size and using the corresponding language.

Every day in Nursery we are observing the children, look-ing at where they are in their learning and using this infor-mation to plan their next steps. We assess the children accord-ing to their progress in each of the seven areas of learning but we also look at how they learn and how we can challenge them further. The UK Statuto-ry Framework for Early Years identifies three ‘Characteristics

of Effective Learning’: Playing and Exploring, Active Learning, Creativity and Thinking Criti-cally. Developing these char-acteristics is vitally important for every child to ensure they meet all of the Early Learning Goals and to prepare them for future learning.

If you wish to develop your knowledge further, please have a look at the following link:

http://www.earlyyearscareers.com/eyc/learning-and-devel-opment/exploring-the-charac-teristics-of-effective-learning/

In addition to this we are contin-uing to develop and embed HPL across the school. This stands for ‘High Performing Learning’ and this approach recognises that all students should have the opportunity to achieve the very highest results, and em-phasises the attitudes and per-formance characteristics need-ed to develop successful, high achieving young people.
