MONTHLY PANMURE BUSINESS ASSOCIATION NEWSLETTER
Issue 109 August 2013
Mayor Len Brown
Join us for the second event in our
Tamaki Business Breakfast series with
our key-note speaker
Auckland Mayor - Mr. Len Brown
The Panmure and Glen Innes Business Associations are keen to help create a thriving
businesses district in Tāmaki which offers good jobs for our people and business
opportunities for the diverse businesses that are located here.
We believe that AMETI is the catalyst to trigger regeneration and renewal of the Tāmaki
area, with investors taking advantage of great infrastructure, good transport links and
availability of skilled and growing local workforce.
To make the vision of a strong business hub in Tamaki a reality, we need to take a more
strategic and collaborative approach and to this end we are holding a networking
opportunity for all businesses – big or small - in the Tamaki catchment.
We hope you will be able to join us to hear Mayor Len Brown speak on the
Tāmaki area and with a chance for you to network with fellow business owners
and hear about our plans for future opportunities to work together to create a
strong business community.
Kind Regards
Gary Holmes, Manager – Glen Innes Business Association & Chris Sutton, Town Centre
Manager – Panmure Business Association

I’m delighted that Mayor Len
Brown agreed to come and speak at our next Tāmaki Business
Community breakfast. Gary from the Glen
Innes Business Association and I
are keen to continue to try and bring together the businesses in Tāmaki and Mayor Len Brown is
an interesting speaker who will be able to give some excellent overall perspectives on this rapidly changing area of
Auckland.
We have had a tremendous response from the business
community who have completed their business details for our new website. Many businesses
took the opportunity to complete the information online and we have had help with entering the hand written data. We’re getting
there!!
The Mt Wellington Foundation Ltd has given us financial support
for the King of the Mountain event
that will be held on Sunday 20 October 2013. I have also started
on applying for financial support to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, Mt Wellington Foundation Ltd and the Lion Foundation for
this year’s Christmas Parade and Festival to be held on Saturday 7 December. Without these organisations support this
historical event would not happen.
Over the past few years, Auckland Council, BID Advisor, Andy
Waugh has been our ‘go to guy’ for problems and a great person to bounce ideas off, left us to
move to Aussie. His wife struggled to find a job here in NZ
but successfully found a suitable job in Melbourne so we said
goodbye to Andy and his lovely son Alex earlier on in July. Andy offered a consistent and reliable service to our Association,
answering all our questions and offering insights into our problems when needed.
He kindly guided past Chairman Shane Johnston and me through the process of updating our
Strategic Plan and offered valuable help in the preparation of our Customer Survey that was conducted by Lisa Schwenke, an
AUT student in the later part of 2012.
On many occasions I asked Andy
to be my sounding board on problems and concerns that I have had and he always given me
excellent advice or pointed me in the right direction, for that I’m truly grateful. Lisa and I will miss him.
Another goodbye is to Mr Rental, who closed their shops doors a few weeks ago. They will
continue to have a presence in Tāmaki via their online store.
Letter from Manager, Chris Sutton

Dunkirk Road Activity Centre – School Holiday Programme for all Children
Since 1978 Dunkirk Road Activity Centre has operated school holiday
programmes for children in the Tamaki district.
This July the children have been entertained with a trip to the Auckland
Museum, a day climbing at Glen Eden Extreme Edge Rock Climbing and a
private screening of Epic at the Monterey Cinema in Howick. Other days
have been filled with fun at the Centre, playing pool, creating art and
catching up with friends made in other school holidays.
Over the years, the cost of running school holiday programmes has
increased and the Board of the Dunkirk Road Centre is very aware that
there are a lot of children in our area who are unable to attend the fun ac-
tivities provided by other school holiday programmes because they are
unable to pay the required fees. Tracey (the Centre Manager) and the
Board work hard to find ways to keep the fees down and to enable all chil-
dren to attend the programme. Tracey is happy to find ways to allow par-
ents to pay the fees by instalment where they can. “For us it’s all about
having the children well cared for and participating in constructive activi-
ties for the holidays, rather than being bored at home or wandering the
streets with nothing to do” she says.
During term time the Centre is well used with a wide variety of activities
for the community and room hire available for groups wanting to do their
own thing.
Children and staff at the Auckland Museum. Attend the "Who Am I" talk by one of the Collections Staff who talked about her job at the museum and what she did. The Children especially enjoyed the Auck-land volcanoes exhibit and the exhibit on Sir Edmund Hilary.
Helping others - Salvation Army hand in hand with the NZMA
On the last Thursday of the each month, the Salvation Army has a Community Meal at the head office in Royal Oak. The meal is to say thank you to all the wonderful volunteers and to connect with the people who are working in the Community Ministry's such as youth workers, coffee groups, homeless people and members from a local Outreach Lodge and
Church.
We all do our own things during the week so it is a great chance to find out what everyone is doing. It was Panmure’s turn to host the meal and having support from Panmure’s NZMA was a win win as their cookery and hospitality team are always looking for occasions to practice their skills. Because the students of the NZMA always look so professional and
smart we decided to make it a Tie Evening and supplied ties to everyone from our store for the occasion. We have set such a high standard that I pity the next group who have to live up to our expectations. “The Panmure Salvation Army Family store wishes to thank each and every member of the fantastic team at NZMA cookery and hospitality for supporting our monthly Community
meal. We were truly blessed by the delicious meal and super friendly staff and beautifully
presented tables. We all went away with smiles on our faces and a very full belly. It was a
fantastic faultless display of culinary skill and efficient friendly service which enabled every
one to come together and enjoy being treated to an unforgettable evening of fellowship.
Thank you for your overwhelming generosity. Well done NZMA cookery and hospitality “

We are pleased to let you know that we were able to assist the Police in the arrest some handbag thieves. Police footage showed four offenders casing an Asian woman and attempting to steal her handbag. Luckily she held on tight but not
before hurting herself in a fall. The main offender hid under a car and then left with his friends down Te Koa Road Alleyway. We were pleased that the woman contacted the Police about the offence. Had she not done this the clear cctv footage evidence would have been worthless. The following day the offenders were spotted in Panmure again. A call to the Police had the offenders arrested. We were delighted that these offenders were so quickly apprehended. This is real Team work.
This incident goes to show how important it is that ALL incidents are reported to the Police. Prosecutions will only happen if
Security Report , Taoa
Lisa has the Last Word …..
1. You just get rid of one lot of taggers and then the next one moves in.
2. Pleasantly surprised at the generally well behaved children in town during their holi-days. I was however sorry to see a few young lads let the team down with their tagging.
3. Lovely art work from Bridge –it Café to entice you in to their premises. I give them 10/10 for their hot chocolate .
Thanks this month and a delicious cake goes to
Philippa Hillman, Personal Assistance/Liaison to Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local
Board , for her tireless efforts in the office. First to arrive and last she leave,
Philippa is efficient, dedicated and professional.
