AROUND OUR SCHOOL

SUPPORTING OUR LOCAL FAMILIES IN NEEDAt The Heights School, providing a caring P-12 community has always been something we are proud of, which we are and always will be committed to. Ensuring nurturing platforms for children to blossom and be themselves is crucial for their development. Our school has a wonderful relationship with the Pathways Community Centre who assists us in supporting families within our community. We are fortunate enough to find this relationship growing and with their help aim to provide further assistance to families in current need.

The Christmas Season is a time for families & friends to come together, celebrate life and show gratitude. This time of year can often be very hard for those around us. We ask for generous donations of food to ensure no child at our school goes hungry. We also ask for kind donations of Christmas themed food items & basic decorations that may brighten up the spirits of our families. We have large boxes placed in our Front Office and Junior School Office for items to be placed. These items will be collected by the Pathways Community Centre and made into vital hampers for identified families.

Any contribution you can make, no matter how small, will have a huge impact on a child’s day and home environment.

Donation boxes are now available for your generosity and will remain until the end of term. Please donate to spread the feeling of joy and care during this Christmas Season.

Our biggest thanks, Noelle Wallis (Pastoral Care Worker) & Vicki Cook (Business Manager)

The week that every Year 8 looks forward to in Indonesian is the week where they are given the opportunity to cook up an Indonesian banquet for their class. On Sunday 12th November, two teams, Newspaper and Octopi, represented The Heights School at the First Lego League Tournament. At the tournament each team had to present their project on a topic about water, compete with their robots to solve Lego challenges, and complete a teamwork challenge.

Both teams had ups and downs throughout the long day, but kept going. Our new team, Octopi, persisted in solving problems with their robot to finally got their robot working on the challenge table in their last robot game. Congratulations to Newspaper for winning the teamwork award.

SENIOR SCHOOL

YEAR 10 CHEMISTRY EXCURSIONOn Tuesday 21st of November students who selected SACE Stage One Chemistry and led by Mr Robin Parsons and Ms Robyn Van Hoof and were invited to a Chemistry spectacular put on by the School of Physical Sciences, University of Adelaide. The students were treated with a range of incredibly spectacular experiments, culminating with the lecturer theatre raining ping pong balls from a simple change of state of a liquid to a gas. The students left amazed by the power of only small quantities of chemicals and how incredibly different they can act in different circumstances. The students would like to thank the University of Adelaide and Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) for sponsoring a taster of the power, excitement and fun of chemistry.

Mr Robin Parsons and Ms Robyn Van Hoof

SUBS IN SCHOOLS NATIONAL COMPETITIONSubs in Schools Nationals - Western AustraliaOnce again The Heights School participated in the prestigious engineering challenge - Subs in Schools. The Subs in Schools program is focused on engaging student interest in the technology of submersible vehicles and submarines. By taking part in such an educational challenge students embark on an educational journey of what it is like to be an Engineer. The program is designed to equip students with the employability skills and knowledge to allow them to take part in the new set of industries being developed as a result of projects such as the Future Submarine Program.

As of the year 2015, The Heights School begun its involvement in the Subs in Schools challenge, with the team at the time given a short timeframe to construct a model submarine. During this year (2017) two ROV teams from The Heights School, Heights and Depths and Atlantis competed in the State event at the Royal Show.

The teams faced many challenges along the way, but persevered and due to their outstanding results in the State competition were invited to compete in the National Finals, this year held in Western Australia. Aspects of the challenge were that we had to document our journey in a 20-page portfolio, present our orthographic drawings and do an 8 minute presentation to representatives from industry and defence.

Students were also required to get the help of sponsors and to come up with ways of marketing and promoting their teams by designing a team logo which would be prominent on the team’s uniforms, trade booth, business cards and any other forms of marketing.

Although we weren’t the National Champions, the challenge has given us an overwhelming amount of knowledge on how to build a working vehicle that can overcome certain challenges and how to work as a team and to use various software like Inventor etc. This all could not have been done without our Industry mentors from SAAB Will and Steve, who helped us so much along the way.

The 2 teams were - Heights and Depths: Jakob Phelan as the Team Leader, Dean Saing as the Design Engineer, Shaun Gunawardane as the Resource Manager, Cooper McDowall as the Manufacturing Engineer and Adam Sobhi as the Graphics Designer.

Atlantis: Jessie Wattie as the Team Leader, Daniel Ko as the Resource Manager, Isabella Shaw as the Graphics Designer, Maximus Schellhase as the Manufacturing Engineer and Josh Ngyuen as the Design Engineer.

Adam Sobhi from Heights & Depths on behalf of the 2 teams

From being named State champions to preparing to go the National competition in WA, the timeline was tight. After successfully securing funding to support the students to attend the event, both teams worked hard to get their ROVs and required documentation and marketing materials ready for the start of the competition. It was clearly evident from competing in the State competition the 2 teams had a better understanding of what was expected of them in the Sea trials and judging stages.

While they weren’t named National Champions (always hard to bet the home team), Atlantis won first place for Innovation and Heights & Depths was named 3rd place winners overall in the ROV class.

I would like to thank Nigel Gill for supporting the students to attend the event. Sharon Robertson for all the preparation and planning she did prior to the teams leaving. Renae Lambden in finance for ensuring that everything was booked. Alix Verdon and Craig Holyhrim for occupying the teams to WA and managing the day to day operations of being away from home. I know the students truly appreciated all the help and support they provided.

Not only did Natalie meet that challenge and the complexities of the required work placement hours and successfully completed both the course and her Year 11 subjects.Natalie’s first work placement with Meals on Wheels was very enjoyable. She then spent both weeks of the Term 3 holidays at an Aged Care Facility working with elderly people, some frail and others with dementia needing high levels of care. A very demanding job that Natalie approached in a positive yet determined way.She has planned to complete Certificate 3 in Individual Support - Disability Stream next year after school hours while she completes her Year 12 studies.

During the Term 2 holidays, Mitchel worked on tasks similar to those undertaken by a first year apprentice in their truck and bus workshop of multi-national company, Scania Australia at Wingfield. Thanks to Gail van Ryswyk and Amanda Pryor for all the wonderful school grown produce that went into an assortment of tasty treats, from vegetable goyza to beetroot brownies cooked by our year 3, 4 and 5 students. Three of our most amazing volunteers are to thank for set up and pack up of the food and refreshments offered at this event. Jodie Warner, Tara Mather and Monique Palmer, we couldn’t have done it without you!
