NSTX-UNSTX-U Update… (4/20/2015)
CD-4 Requirements
• 50 kA plasma– Penultimate activity is ISTP-001, “NSTX-U Coil Energization Tests”– Then go to XMP-100
• 40 kV beam into the armor– Handled via startup and conditioning beam procedures

NSTX-UNSTX-U Update… (4/20/2015)
Solid Progress Being Made on Both Fronts
• ISTP-001– Started last Thursday– Have run all coils at 10% and 50% of their CD-4 limits– Have run most coils at 100% of their CD-4 limits
• Includes 65 kA TF.
– Demonstrated I^2t, overcurrent, overtime trips of various types.– Using these shots to correct many many magnetics issues.
• Final commissioning of the gas delivery/injection system is maybe the final hurdle at this point.– Significant progress made over the weekend, but still at least a few full
shifts of work
• NB #2 source B is now HV conditioning towards to 40 kV beam target.– Some setbacks on 2A and 2C.

NSTX-UNSTX-U Update… (4/20/2015)
What about after CD-4?That is, after BOTH the Plasma and NBI milestones are met.
• Commit resources to completing key MPTS tasks before the bakeout…target 1 week.
• Spend most of May on the bakeout.• ISTP, MPTS R&R, commissioning in later May and June.• Research ops in July and onward.• Many background engineering tasks during this time.
– More dummy load testing.– Gas injection systems– Control system work

You may ask…
• What about access to the NTC?– Very restricted access during bakeout– Very restricted access during MPTS R&R, or other times when the laser is firing.– 2nd shift access during this and the next ISTP.– Weekend access.– Sporadic first shift access…coordinate with Al is your best bet.
• Opportunities arise if you are ready to take advantage of them– Maintenance weeks
• What does it take to get work done?– Most tasks can be done on a D-Site work permit.– Many tasks can be done under the “reinstall what was taken off” work package.– Only major new work requires a “blue folder”.– Plan your work a few days in advance ( and ASAP)…it can take a few days to get
work permits approved.• Don McBride can help with the permits and procedures (but note he works Mon-Wed).
