How can we describe the business: business
modeling
• Business processes (flows)
– What do you need to do to perform your business?
• Business concepts (business dictionary)
– Simplify communication by sharing common definitions
– Also known as semantic model
3
Why a business / semantic model?
• Achieve common understanding of the business
– Clear identification / definition of the business concepts and how
they relate to each other
– Clarity on the concepts upfront = less troubles later
– Simplifies education
– Alignment across business areas
– Shared understanding in the industry
• A good business model is a strong rallying flag for
disconnected standards.
– More efficient than mapping a lot of low level constructs

This diagram shows the packages which contain the description of the Business Model. Examples of the description of the links between the packages are included
Why is this important and good for
financial institutions?
• Shared concept definitions across the industry
– Foundation for communication between industry players
– Others map to us (ISO 20022 brand power)
• Use the Business Model to align internal databases to ISO 20022
and support internal integration projects
• Easy mapping with other standards simplifies understanding.
– Use of synonyms to indicate the equivalent in other standards
