We have been blessed with a summer full of activities for our youth. From the Celebration Ringers Bell Tour, spending a week at Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp, having a BBQ with the Thursday morning mens group, leading Kids Kamps and Toddler Tales, hosting Vacation Bible School and an epic High School trip to Moabit has been one busy summer! The best part is that all the relationships that have grown and been developed throughout the summer will continue to get stronger as we gear up for more faith, fellowship, and fun this fall. This past Saturday we had 18 youth and adults participate in a Peer Ministry Leadership Training. We had a great time starting with the Good Samaritan Story from Luke 10. This story underlies the whole training experience. Specific skills change it from an ancient story that Jesus told into an attitude and practice of doing likewise. We cant wait to see our youth bringing their skills to action as they have learned how to listen, ask caring questions, and guide friends through choices, changes, and challenges. They have the gift to welcome people, even those who are not always welcomed. Our youth are our right now and our future; if they are not leading, they are leaving. This training and all the work of building our youth ministry over the last summer is going to take us into the fall on a strong note! On Rally Day you had the opportunity to see many of our youth and to pray with them and for them. We invite you to continue to pray for them, for the choices they are faced with each day, for the struggles they might face as teenagers in a fast-paced world, for the joys they celebrate, and for the faith they continue to grow. It is a good time to be in youth ministry at First Lutheran. We are grateful for the support of the congregation in lifting up our youth as leaders, praying for them, and modeling a life-long faith that is displayed through worship experiences, relationships and care for each other. Please keep these members of First Lutheran, their family and friends, in your prayers this week.

Thank you’s received…

“I am so grateful for the Saturday evening service at 5 pm provided by First Lutheran Church. Without this service, corporate worship would not be possible for me. I am also blessed by participating in Holy Communion. There are almost certainly others who would like to know of this worship experience. Thank you sincerely.” “The Board of Directors of Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity would like to thank you for your generous donation to the Thrivent Faith Build. Your donation makes it possible for us to continue to have a positive impact on families and our community.”

October Altar Flowers to Recognize Breast Cancer Awareness

A suggestion has been received to reach out to Breast Cancer survivors in hopes that we can spark enough interest to fill the month of October each week with flowers in honor of breast cancer survi-vors and memory of those who lost the battle. We regularly designate two weeks in October to Breast Cancer awareness, so this year I am looking to fill at least two more Sundays. Two sponsors each week would result in a cost of $20 each person. If you would be interested in joining us in the month of October with altar flowers designated for Breast Cancer awareness or a loved one, call or text Lan-nette Abbey, 719.510.6667, no later than September 15, 2019, to participate in October 2019 altar flowers.

FROM THE PASTOR

Thank you for saying yes. I know you did just volunteer a few weeks back, but as we gear up for the fall programs and the capital campaign, I’m so grateful for those of you who say yes when asked to serve. When you called me here, I heard that First Lutheran was “staff driven.” But that’s not entirely true. We have an amaz-ing staff, who go above and beyond every single day and deserve our gratitude and apprecia-tion. But they rely on volunteers to keep our congregation thriving in pursuit of our mis-sion. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ to Shelly when she asked you to serve as a Sunday School teacher or shepherd, or on the Kick Team. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ to Pastor Carrie when she asked you to be a confirmation guide, an acolyte or crucifer. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ to Marcia when she asked you to host an Aspen group, or serve as a worship assistant or usher or help with a memorial service or serve as a new mem-ber sponsor. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ when Pastor Bob asked you to be a Christian caregiv-er and take holy communion to the homebound and hospitalized. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ when Tad, Terry, Lynn, Debra or Sarah asked you to serve on their capital campaign

committee. Thank you for saying ‘yes’ when asked to run for council, or help with the count-ing team or serve on the finance committee. Thank you to all of you who volunteer in so many other ways, taking care of our gardens, making blankets for those in need, serving in the soup kitchen, folding bulletins and so many other things. it is beautiful to see the church being the church. We are heading into the fall and we’ll have our annual conversations about financial steward-ship and sharing with the church a portion of your income. But stewardship of time, sharing some of your time to help us achieve our vision is also an important spiritual discipline. Time is a limited resource, and we all only have 24 hours per day. I know the value of an hour, and it is exceedingly high. Thank you for giving your hours to the ministry of First Lutheran. I don’t take your gift for granted. Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you!

Let’s Kneel for Communion

We will be kneeling for Holy Communion this Sunday, after taking a break from the practice for the past two months. I’m still concerned about the safety of taking that step up to the altar rail, so please look out for each other and use the handrail. I’m so grateful for the polite letters and conversations of members sharing their desire to kneel, and how they missed it during the past two months. We are going back to kneeling on the first and third Sundays of each month. When we redesign the chancel, it will be important to make it possible to kneel without requiring steps. Thank you for experimenting with this change and having a spirit of flexibility.

Confirmation Begins Again

This begins my 10th year teaching confirmation here at First Lutheran, and what it gift it has been! It is such a privilege to walk with our youth as they ask questions, explore what it means to be a Christian and have faith, and to start developing their own understanding of what it means to be a child of God in a world that needs more disciples of Jesus, and more kind-ness and more love. It’s always my hope that I can help them along this journey in ways that lift up the gifts they have and let them see where Jesus might be calling them. This year I will have about 28 eighth and ninth graders in our confirmation class. It promises to be a fantastic class with lots of energy. I’m hop-ing to use some of that energy by inviting them into worship leadership roles at our 10:45 ser-vice, engaging them in small group conversa-tions, and the return of the sermon note. Our class will meet on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month, having class at 9:15, worshiping together at 10:45 (look for us up front!) and then having lunch and small groups after worship. We will be using the Aspen group model, the sermon notes the youth have taken, and questions pro-vided by the preacher of the day to facilitate our small group time! I am excited to have fantastic adult leaders, opportunities for conversation about what the challenges and joys are each week, and how we can grow together as a com-munity. I encourage you to reach out to our confirmation youth, get to know them by name, ask them

YOUTH AT FIRST LUTHERAN questions, and thank them for being here. I look forward to another year of working with our youth and hope that you look forward to engaging with them as much as I do! Pastor Carrie

Gearing up for Fall

This fall we have created a calendar of activi-ties that give our middle school and high school youth opportunities to serve, to have fun, and to continuing growing relationships with each other and our congregation. Con-tact Shelly at [email protected] if you plan to at-tend any of these events.

COMING SOON The Gift of the Years – Growing Old Gracefully

We are beginning to explore enhancing our min-istry to older adults. The first stage of this minis-try will be to discover the positive aspects of ag-ing. We will do this by initiating a book study entitled: The Gift of the Years – Growing Old Gracefully by Joan Chittister. The Gift of the Years is highly ac-claimed and looks at the many dimensions of aging, the purposes and concerns, struggles and surprises, and the potential and joys. It deals with the sense of rejection that comes from feel-ing out of it. It reflects on the temptation to iso-late oneself from the changes taking place, and on the need to stay involved. It discusses issues of health and well-being. It describes what hap-pens as old relationships end and shift, change and disappear in favor of the many new people and new challenges that come to take their place. It talks about the fear of tomorrow and the mys-tery of forever – and how to cope with it all. And perhaps the most important dimension of older age Joan Chittister illuminates, is to become aware of its profound purpose: These are the cap-stone years, the time in which a whole new life is in the making again. The study will be led by Pastor Hank Maertens. If you are interested in attending, you can sign up at the Welcome Center desk. The cost of the book is $12.00 and payable upon sign up. For those interested, the study will conclude with a brown bag lunch at 11:30 am. The church will provide beverages.

Adult Seminar Ryana Holt

Ryana Holt tells about her experience as a missionary in Chile. Since graduating from St. Olaf College in 2015, Ryana has been in-volved in ELCA Global Mission service. She first volunteered at a human rights organi-zation in Mexico City for a year with Young Adults in Global Mission. Shortly thereafter, she began her position in Chile where she was welcomed by the Iglesia Evangelica Luterana en Chile (IELCH). To sign up go to the Welcome Center and make a payment of $13.00 for the book. Deadline for registration is September 15.

Is This the Time? Interpreting the Mystery of Revelation

This resource provides a much-needed, truly biblical perspective on what is arguably the most difficult book of the Bible. It will consist of a short video presentation by Dr. Craig Koester, Professor of New Testament at Luther Seminary, followed by discussion. This series will help us discover Revelation's message of God's love and hope for the world, shrouded in symbolism, prophecy, conflict and fear. Discus-sion will be led by Pastor Bob.
