July 26, 2015 NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST It’s that time of year when families are coming home from vacations, and children and youth are going back to school in anticipation of a brand new start. Chancel and Chamber Choirs are two weeks from beginning rehearsals for Christmas at Oak Grove and the Orchestra and Wesley Ringers (handbells) begin almost immediately. Our church is anticipating moving into the fall season, and the Music Ministry is preparing to “hit the ground running” when school starts. It feels as though we just watched the Children’s Choirs sing that final concert, and the Youth Choir – didn’t they just get back from tour? We have excellent choral and instrumental ensembles that encompass every family member. I encourage you to be part of the many wonderful worship experiences and programming opportunities which will be offered to you. Did you sing or play an instrument in college? Do your children sing in the choir and play in the band at school? Maybe no one in your family has been involved in music before but would like to be. We want and need your musical gifts. You can read about each ensemble if you go online: www.ogumc.org/ministries/music. Also, be on the lookout for the new Music Department Brochure which will have a listing of all dates and programs for the 2015-2016 calendar. July 26, 2015 NINTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

It’s that time of year when families are coming home from vacations, and children and youth are going back to school in anticipation of a brand new start. It feels as though we just watched the Children’s Choirs sing that nal concert, and the Youth Choir – didn’t they just get back from tour?

We have excellent choral and instrumental ensembles that encompass every family member. I encourage you to be part of the many wonderful worship experiences and programming opportunities which will be oered to you. To kick o the season, here are some important dates:

It is almost time for our summer mission event! We have had a great response so far but still need more participants to help us reach our goal. Go to www.ogumc.org to register for a two-hour shift (the 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. shift needs the most additional work-ers) and to make your donation. Each $25 donation feeds more than 100 children. You can also donate by making your check payable to Oak Grove UMC with “Feed My Starving Children” on the memo line. Childcare is available by reservation for children under 5.

Mission Trip

Our 2015 mission trip to the mainland of Honduras was such a success that we are going back again January 23-30, 2016. Now is the time to begin praying about being a part of this team, and saving money for the journey. e mainland team works alongside local residents to complete light construction projects and oer a Vacation Bible School experience for children. e cost for the trip will be $1900, but those who have sky miles may be able to cut their cost signicantly by buying tickets with sky miles. An informa-tional session about this trip will be held on August 16 at 12 p.m. in room 217. Contact Amy Morgan ([email protected]) for more information about the trip or to sign up to participate.

July 22, 2015 Churches Express Support for Arson Victims In the days following the tragic shooting at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., several fires broke out at predominantly black churches across the South. As of this date, three of those fires have been confirmed arson, and the FBI is investigating the incidents as potential hate crimes. In our country’s history, many black churches have been burned. Though church burnings are less common today, they happen with more frequency than most people realize. The complicity of silence of the white church during the rash of terrorism against African American churches in the 1960s will forever remain a blight on the white church’s witness for social justice. As clergy in predominantly white United Methodist Churches we feel it is important to speak out against violence targeting our brothers and sisters in African American churches. We condemn all racist acts against predominantly black churches and name specifically the burning of churches as heinous crimes and intolerable acts of inhumanity. The black church has stood at the center of the fight for civil rights in our country, and we express gratitude for the collective ministry and witness of the black churches, especially in the South where their very existence is threatened physically and politically. We stand in solidarity with all victims of violence. We extend prayers and support to members of Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church and the churches victimized by arson. We feel powerless and frustrated by the situation. By its nature, terrorism strikes in unpredictable ways and places. We affirm the words of Cornell Williams Brooks, President of the NAACP, who said that the events require our collective attention and cautioned that we cannot turn a blind eye to any incident. We add our voice of faith to the calls for careful investigation, wise care and caution to protect innocent lives, and faithful generosity to help restore the buildings that have been harmed. We will receive offerings in our churches through August, the proceeds of which will be given through the North Georgia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church to be divided among the churches victimized by arson. We invite and encourage other churches to stand with black churches and join in advocating against violence, calling for thorough investigation by the law enforcement, and working toward restoration of the churches.
