knocked off Alton 51-41.The Panthers (13-3),
swept through four games in three days, winning back-to-back titles here and did so with precision of going to the rim hard with anyone they had on the court.
“We’re a pretty good team at attacking the rim,” said Jersey coach Kevin Strebel, whose Panthers defeated Marquette 52-43 on Dec. 12, “because you can put several players on the floor that all can handle the basketball, can all get to the rim, and we also can shoot it so you have to respect the shooters. A couple weeks ago, they did a good job with their pres-sure. They turned us over a few times. Out of their 43 points (on Dec. 12), my statistics showed they had 23 off turnovers. That’s a problem, so that was some-thing we fixed tonight. I don’t know how many we had, but it wasn’t anything like that.”
Jersey only turned it over nine times, handled Marquette’s pressure bet-ter, and the Panthers’ ability to challenge being guarded one-on-one was a key to either knocking shots down or getting to the foul line.
“Yes, we are sharing the basketball more,” said Jer-sey senior Lauren Brown, who finished with eight points, seven rebounds and blocked four shots. “We have four seniors. We all lead pretty well and we have five juniors which are all pretty well experienced. That really brings a lot of to the table because we have the experience so we’re not struggling to fill the gaps of seniors miss-ing.
“Last year, I didn’t score very much, but this year, I’m scoring more than I ever had. I think it makes us very hard to guard because if all of us can score, you have to be wor-ried about all of us instead of just two of us.”
The Panthers were led by tournament MVP Clare Breden’s 14 points, but Abby Manns, who set the tempo attacking the basket early, scored eight of her 13 in the first quarter.
“I think that you nailed that in terms of she can really get to the rim and she can go in either direc-tion,” Strebel said of Manns. “It’s just hard to stay in front of her. She did that. She was our spark, but everybody came along with her scoring up and down the lineup there tonight.”
Boston Talley came off the bench to score nine, Brown had eight, Bella Metzler finished with seven and Chloe White fin-ished with six.
“I say about a lot of teams, they have a hard time finding five that can guard our five,” Strebel said. “They might be able to find one that can guard our one, but five guarding our five is really a difficult forum.
“… We’ve got 10 that are coming, working with each other. I’m using all of them, they know that, and they have to be ready. There’s nobody sitting there think-ing, ‘I’m not going to get in this game.’ They’re going to get in, and they’re going to give us a contribu-tion throughout the four games.”
Marquette (12-5), which went 3-1 in tournament play and reached the final for the first time here, were led by Adrenna Snipes’ 19 points. Abby Williams had 15 of her 17 points in the second half attacking the
basketball herself, but try-ing to contain Jersey’s bal-ance of attacking the rim was too tall of a task for Marquette to handle.
“They run that dribble-drive offense and try to get you going downhill and get momentum and get in the lane,” Marquette coach Lee Green said of Jersey. “They’ve got size. That’s kind of what they did to us two weeks ago in the sec-ond half. They really got going downhill. We’ve got to do a better job stopping that.”
Jersey built its lead to 27 at 56-29 in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Metzler before Marquette turned around and used a 12-0 run, culminated by a Kamryn Fandrey 3-pointer with 3 minutes 42 seconds remaining in the game to make it a 56-41 game. Mar-quette closed the game on a 17-3 run.
Calhoun 51, Alton 41 - In the seventh-place game, Calhoun (4-11) got 17 points from Colleen Schumann and 10 points from Sydney Baalman in its victory over Alton.
The Redbirds (3-13) got a game-high 22 points from Germayia Wallace.
Calhoun led 32-17 at halftime, but the Redbirds rallied in the third quarter to get within 36-30 head-ing into the fourth quarter.

incomplete pass on the second. The offensive MVP of the game, Garbers completed 22 of 31 passes for 272 yards with TD passes of 4, 3, 2 and 6 yards. He also scored on quarterback sneak from the 1 early in the second quarter while helping the Bears set a season-high for scoring.
It was significantly different than 2018, when Garbers threw three first-half interceptions against TCU in the Cheez-It Bowl and spent the remain-der of the game on the sidelines.
“It went a lot better today than last year,” Garbers said. “It just speaks to the guys in our offensive room and the team and how hard we work. We knew playing Illinois there would be shots we needed to take. You just have to execute those shot plays.”
The Bears won all seven games this season when the oft-injured Garbers played more than one half.
Christopher Brown Jr. ran for 120 yards on 20 carries, and Makai Polk caught five passes for a season-high 105 yards as Cal (8-5) won its first bowl game since 2015.
Brandon Peters passed for 273 yards and one touchdown for Illinois (6-7) in his return after sitting out the regular-season finale with a concus-sion. Peters, who was shaken up again after diving out of bounds following a scramble late in the fourth quarter, completed 22 of 37 passes and added a team-high 68 rushing yards.
The Illini lost despite outgaining the Bears in total yards 450-395.
“We didn’t play well enough. You have to give Cal credit for that,” Illi-nois coach Lovie Smith said. “Some-times yards can be a little misleading. They got in the end zone more than we did.”
The strong showing by Garbers offset an uneven day by California’s defense.
The Bears allowed a field goal and touchdown on the Fighting Illini’s first two drives, then surrendered a late field goal before halftime.
Illinois’ offense was mostly stagnant after that, while California pulled away.
The Bears had lost three of their
previous four bowl games.California led 14-10 late in the
second quarter before the teams combined for 10 points in the final 25 seconds.
After Wilcox made the decision to go for it on a 4th-and-goal, Garbers threw a short swing pass to Brown, who stiff-armed Illinois linebacker Tolson Khalan before reaching the end zone.
Peters helped the Illini answer quickly. He completed three consecu-tive passes for 58 yards, setting up a 30-yard field goal by James McCourt.
THE TAKEAWAYCalifornia: The Bears put a nice
ending on their roller-coaster season with their third consecutive win. Linebacker Evan Weaver was stopped short in his bid to set the NCAA sin-gle-season record for tackles, but that was one of the few things that didn’t go Cal’s way. Garbers might have needed this game as much as anybody and it bodes well for the entire offense heading into next year.
Illinois: There was never much consistency to the offense and the secondary was repeatedly beaten for big gains, a bad combination on a day when California’s quarterback had a career game. Smith acknowledged before the game that he felt the Illini were already a year ahead of schedule, so in a way, they were playing with house money. But with three consecu-tive losses to end the year, much of that progress will be overshadowed.
DELAY, DELAY, DELAYIllinois’ offense continually put itself
in bad position with three delay of game penalties. “Two of them were my fault,” Peters said. “I just wasn’t paying attention to the play clock.”
UP NEXTCalifornia: The Bears will lose
Weaver to graduation but return 18 other starters on offense and defense. They open the 2020 season against UNLV at Allegiant Stadium, the future home of the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders.
Illinois: With almost the entire starting unit on both sides of the ball expected back next season, Smith’s team has high expectations heading into 2020. The Illini will host Illinois State in the season opener on Sept. 4.

well,” Carlinville coach Darrin DeNeve said. “We’re very proud of the effort by our team. It was just a very tough game. Gillespie played tough and we played tough and we’re just fortunate that the ball bounced our way a couple times in the over-time period.”
The biggest play in OT came from Jill Stayton after the Cavs gained possession on an Eryn Seal steal and kept possession with a couple offensive rebounds before Stay-ton hit a 3-pointer with 3:13 remaining. Stayton would immediately draw a charge to get the ball back for the Cavs, who made a 2 of 6 effort from the foul line in the final 90 good enough to win.
Corin Stewart scored
11 points, Seal had 10 and Stayton finished with six points for the Cavaliers, who finished 12 of 28 from the foul line. Gillespie, which made 8 of 18 free throws, got eight points from Madison Niemeyer and seven points apiece from MacKenzy Mix
and Emily Schmidt. Both the Cavs and
Miners placed two on the all-tourney team, with Carlinville’s Reels and Seal and Gillespie’s Shelby Taylor and Keaton Link joining Greenfield’s Jessa Vetter and Alexis Pohlman and Litchfield’s Carly Boden.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A tough month for the Iowa Hawkeyes ended with a rousing Holiday Bowl victory over Southern California that would have made Hayden Fry and Bump Elliott proud.
Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored on a 6-yard run, a 98-yard kickoff return and a 12-yard reception — all in the second quarter — to lead No. 19 Iowa to a 49-24 rout of No. 22 USC on Friday night.
Edwardsville High School graduate AJ Epenesa, the defensive player of the game, finished with four tackles, 2.5 sacks and 1.5 tackles for loss. He is still mulling if he will turn pro.
From the Iowa game notes, Epenesa tied an Iowa bowl record and matched his career high with 2.5 sacks (Babineaux 2005 Capital One; Hodge 2005 Capital One), and raised his season total to 11.5, the most by any Hawkeye since Adrian Clayborn had 11.5 in 2009. Epenesa had a team-high 10.5 sacks in 2018. He is the first Hawkeye to record double-digit sack totals in con-secutive seasons since Matt Roth in 2002-03 (10 in 2002, 12 in 2003).
Senior Nate Stanley threw two touchdown passes and the Hawkeyes (10-3) won their fourth straight game for their sixth 10-win season in coach Kirk Ferentz’s 21 years.
The Hawkeyes honored both Fry, the former coach who died Dec. 17 at age 90, and Elliott, a former ath-letic director who died Dec. 7 at 94.
“It’s been a really challenging month in Iowa athletics with the passing of Bump and Coach Fry,” said Ferentz, who was an assistant under Fry. “When you think about both of those men, what they stood for and what they taught, was com-peting at a high level and doing it with great competitiveness, but also with integrity.
“That’s one of the reasons I’m just so proud to be at Iowa and hope-fully this is one they both enjoyed
tonight, and more importantly their families.”
The Hawkeyes even did the Hokey Pokey during a locker room celebra-tion, continuing one of many tradi-tions Fry started during his tenure from 1979-98.
“We felt to honor him, we would do that,” Stanley said.
Smith-Marsette, the offensive play-er of the game, was late getting into the locker room because of the tro-phy presentation. “I thought we were going to sing the fight song, and all you hear is, ‘Put your right foot in … ’ Just being able to part of that, like Nate said, it was a tradition for Coach Fry. It was a special thing.”
USC freshman quarterback Kedon Slovis, who threw two touchdown passes, was knocked out of the game with an injured right elbow in the third quarter. The Trojans (8-5) fell apart after Slovis left and had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Smith-Marsette helped the Hawk-eyes to a 28-17 halftime lead.
Smith-Marsette scored on a 6-yard sweep for a 14-7 lead. After USC tied it on Slovis’ 16-yard pass to Vavae Malepeai, Smith-Marsette returned the kickoff 98 yards to give the Hawkeyes the lead for good.
Smith-Marsette, a junior wide receiver, also had a 95-yard kickoff return for a score in the regular-season finale, a 27-24 victory over Nebraska.
He credited his teammates on spe-cial teams. “They work their (rear) off to go out there, sacrifice their body for me. Just being able to run behind them is incredible. They set me up perfectly tonight. All I did was follow my blockers. Credit to them.”
Stanley found Smith-Marsette on a 12-yard scoring pass on Iowa’s next possession for a 28-14 lead.
Chase McGrath kicked a 32-yard field goal as the clock expired to pull USC to 28-17 at halftime.
