vCenter server is installed on Windows Server or Linux Server. VMware vCenter server is a centralized management application that lets you manage virtual machines and ESXi hosts centrally. vSphere client is used to access vCenter Server and ultimately manage ESXi servers

1.1 Target Audience/Purpose/Scope: This document is targeted installation of Vmware Vsphere 6.0 vCenter Server.

1.2 Asssumptions- • Windows 2012 R2 Machine x64 with lasted Patch. • Windows Machine Joined to Active Directory Domain Controller.

1.3 Scope of the document: Cover only Vcenter Server Installation.

1 Introduction



1.4 Prerequisite requirements

1) Download VMware-VIMSetup-all-6.0.0.-2656757 from VMware download(Click On Link)

2) Windows 2012 R2 OS Hosting Solution. 3) Min CPU, RAM and Disk requirements 4) CPU x 2, RAM 3G to 8 G and Disk 50 G

vCenter Host DNS -FQDN and AD Membership Registered to both AD and DNS. i.e

5) Installation as a AD Account with inactive logon to run installation that has local Administrator Permissions.

7) Local Policy Settings- Setting Install User ID to be added Log on as a services- Give the administrator’s account the right to Log On as a service.

a. Go Administrative Tools, Local Security Policy. In the console tree, Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment. In the details pane, double-click Log on as a service



*here is the what you will see if the above prerequisite local security is not set.

2.2 Run as Administrator

2.4 vCenter Installation Options:

vcenter installations- a) vCenter Server for Windows-

Illustrated Example: VMWare vSphere Vcenter Installer User Interface.



a. vCenter Server for Windows Installation Steps. 1. Select -vCenter Server for Windows Option and Click Install

2. You will see Vcenter installation UI pop up- Welcome to the VMware vCenter Server 6.0.0. Installers- Click Next.



2) Check Box To Accept End User License Agreement and Click Next.

4) Select Deployment Type: In this demo- We will Select Embedded Deployment.-Click-Next. *Platform Services Controller is the vCenter Sign-On Component.



5) System Network Name-Should show FQDN resolved in DNS- Vcenter host name. For example, vcenter03.mcp.local- Click Next.

6) ignore the IPV6 FQDN not resolvable error message pop- Click Ok.



7) vCenter Signgle Sign-On Configuration- Input below values- Click Next. Domain name: Vsphere.local(keep default values) vCenter Single Sign-On user name: Administrator(keep default) vCenter Single Sign-On password:xxxxxxxxxx Confirm password: xxxxxxxxxxx Site name: Default-First-Site:

*join a vCenter Single Sign-On on domain: will be covered in Linked Mode Section.



8) vCenter Server Service Account- Typically a windows Domain Service Account is used for vCenter Installation .

For example, the Vcentersa domain service account is a member of local Administrator.

In this demo- we will select – Specific a user server account. And input password- Click Next.



9) Database Settings: In this demo- We will use an embedded database(vPostgres).-Click Next.

10) Configuration Ports: Keep Defaults Ports.



11) Destination Directory: Keep Default – Click Next.

12) Ready To Install- Review your settings before starting the

installation – Click Install-

13) Don’t be alarmed.. You will get a prompt- IPV6 could not resoved – Click Ok if you are not intend to to use IPv6.

14) Click Finish To Complete vCenter Server Installation.



16 Reboot To Vcenter Window 2012 OS Host Machine. After Reboot The Vmware Vritual Center Server Service May take awhile to start.



2.6 Configure SSO . Center 5.5 Single Sign On secure authentication mechanism secure allowing vSphere components communicates each other using secure token exchange and integrate with MS AD.

Scope: This document will illustrate AD Authentication to Vcenter 5.5 Installation Windows 2012 R2. 1). Log into Web Client To add AD User and Group To Vcenter Access Control List Groups.

2). To access vSphere Web Client- Open Browser and point URL reference to the vcentrer IP address or FQDN for example, . https://<vCenter Server IP>:9443/vsphere-client

For example Below URL Vsphere Web Client Address: https://vcenter03:9443/vsphere-client/?csp

3). Enter your SSO [email protected] user login and password credentials, [email protected]”

Login as [email protected] Password (Windows): Set during installation Navigate to Administration > Single Sign-On > Configuration




Select Identity Source Type: A) Windows based vCenter Server 5.5: Active Directory (Integrated Windows Authentication)

1. (If there is no Single Sign-On configuration you are probably not logged in as [email protected])

2. Click the green + sign to add an identity source

B )Click OK, Back at Identity Sources your AD should appear in the list and from now on you are able to assign vCenter permissions to users and groups from your active directory. When you are using the Integrated Windows Authentication, trusted domains are also available. The functionality is very similar to vSphere 4.x and vSphere 5.0

1. Select you Active Directory and click the “world with arrow” button to make AD to your default domain.

2. Click Yes to set default domain.

3. Go Users and Groups---> Groups--->Select Administrator Under Groups--- ->Add Members--.



4. Add Principals-- Click on dropdown ----under Domain and Select AD Domain.

i.e: Mvp.local (Not vsphere.local)*N ote You may need to select it a couple t ime due AD need to pulled from Active Directory to local Vsphere Vcenter ADAM.

5. Select the User or Security Group to Add Vcenter Administrator Role and Click Ok.



6. Test to See Active Authentication is working. Log off Web Client and Log on within the AD User ID.

Domain\user ID and Password. I.E Below, Active Directory Users/Groups added to Vcenter Administrator Role



2.7 Validate Active Directory Account can access Newly Vcenter Server,

Log into the Web vSphere Client- and Input Domain\user ID syntax. I.E MCP\rpham

You should see user id illustrated above Vsphere Web Client
