Powerful Performance. The 3126BATAAC engine delivers net power of119 kW (160 hp), and meets EPA Tier 2emissions standards. Its advanced fuelsystem keeps fuel at low pressure in thelines until it is injected into the cylinder.Fuel pressure is created hydraulicallyin response to a signal from theADEM™ III Electronic Control Module.

Electronic Control Module. The ADEM III fuel system is aproprietary electronic control modulethat provides improved engine responseand fuel efficiency, plus advanceddiagnostics and reduced emissions.Altitude capability up to 3050 meters(10,000 feet) is available withoutderating. ADEM III allows full

electronic integration of the engineand transmission for maximum powertrain efficiency.

Turbocharged, ATAAC. Turbochargingpacks dense air into the cylinders formore complete combustion and loweremissions. Air-to-air aftercooling(ATAAC) provides a separatecooling system for intake manifold air.The ATAAC system reduces smokeand emissions by providing cooler inletair for more efficient combustion.

Constant Net Horsepower. The IT38GII electronic engine is integrated withan on-demand cooling fan. The enginecompensates for varying fan loads andprovides constant net horsepower, regardless of operating conditions.A consistent level of “working”horsepower is provided and fuelconsumption is reduced.

EngineThe IT38G II provides more power, excellent fuel economy, and reduced maintenance.

Electronic Power Shift Transmission. The electronic power shift transmissionwith automatic shift capability is acountershaft design built by Caterpillar. It is electronically controlled and allowsfull power shifts and directional changes.Fully modulated gear shifts contributeto operator comfort and increasecomponent life.

Electronic Clutch Pressure Control(ECPC). Senses input from both thetransmission and the operator controlsin the cab to modulate each individualclutch through a proportional electro-hydraulic valve. This results in smoothergear changes and improved shift quality.Energy is modulated into the clutches, resulting in longer clutch life.

Integrated Braking System (IBS).The Caterpillar® exclusive IntegratedBraking System integrates downshiftingand transmission neutralization into theleft brake pedal. IBS provides smooth, optimized transmission neutralizerperformance with a greater range ofadjustability. IBS also lowers owningand operating costs by reducing axle oiltemperatures, which can extend servicebrake life.

Easy Service. Daily transmission oillevel check is done from the groundthrough a well-protected sight gauge. An oil sampling valve allows quick, clean access to the transmission forS•O•SSM oil analysis.

Variable Shift Control (VSC). VariableShift Control allows the operator toselect one of three different shiftpatterns based on the application andoperating preferences. VSC reducesfuel consumption in many applications. In all modes, full machine powerremains available for loading.

Limited Slip Differentials. Front and RearLimited Slip Differentials are availableas attachments. The differential clutchslows the slipping wheel and transferstorque to the slower turning wheel.

Power TrainAdvanced Caterpillar® power train is reliable and fuel efficient.

Excellent System Access. The IT38G IIprovides a swing-out grill, hydraulic oilcooler and air conditioner condenser foreasy cleaning. Side panels open to allowaccess to both sides of all cores forcleaning. A heavy duty airborne debrisgrill, with 4 mm perforations isavailable as an attachment.

Reverse Flow. Air enters through therear grill and exits out the top openingand side hood doors. Rear air flowpicks up less debris from the ground, reducing plugging.

On-Demand Fan. Electronicallycontrolled, variable speed on-demandfan adjusts to meet the varying coolingrequirements of the machine. Fan speedis determined by oil, coolant and inletmanifold temperatures. In cooleroperating conditions, average fanspeed is reduced, resulting in less fuelconsumption, lower noise levels andless radiator plugging.

Unit Core Radiator. The unit coreradiator with square wave-shaped finsand lower fin density (6 fins per inch)allows debris to pass through easily.

6

Cooling SystemThe G Series II cooling package reduces radiator plugging and improves fuel efficiency.

Low Exhaust Emissions. The Cat®

3126B ATAAC engine used in theIT38G Series II is a low emissionengine designed to meet currentemissions regulations. It is electronicallycontrolled, with air-to-air aftercoolingfor more efficient combustion andcleaner emissions.

Reduced Sound. The electronic on-demand fan automatically regulates fanspeed depending on cooling requirements. The fan draws less horsepower in coolerambient temperatures, which reducesfuel consumption. Sound levels are alsoreduced when the fan slows down. There is additional insulation aroundthe engine to reduce sound levels.

Environmental Fluids. Extended LifeCoolant/Antifreeze with anti-foamingand anti-corrosion properties provideextended service intervals (up to6,000 hours) and requires lessfrequent fluid changes and disposals.Air conditioning refrigerant is CFC-free.

Fewer Leaks And Spills. Oil samplingvalves and pressure test ports areincluded for easy service diagnostics, with less chance of spills. Filters arepositioned vertically and located foreasy access, allowing for removalwithout fluid spillage.

Ecology Drains. Standard for the engine, transmission, hydraulics, radiator andfuel. Activating the valve allows fluidto be drained into a container withoutspillage. Axle oil ecology drains arean attachment and allow quicker oilchanges with reduced spillage.

Rebuildable Components. Many majorcomponents are designed to be rebuilt.Worn components can be remanufacturedinstead of thrown out.
