Napoli Senza Titolo - Naples UntitledNaples is a city of extremes. Famous for its beauty and cre-ative spirit, it’s also associated with environmental degrada-tion and political corruption. Often times, clichés and stereotypes on both ends of this spectrum prevail over a more tempered, multifaceted reality. Made up of photographs by twenty of It-aly’s most accomplished photographers, exhibit’s mission is to explore the ways in which public spaces in Naples have been used over the last forty years, showing the va-riety of ways in which the town has responded to challenges facing it, thus offering a narrative of the city that incorporates the many facets of its character and allowing each viewer to en-ter the cityscape in their own way. The images tell how public spaces in Naples continue to be relevant and provide people with a sense of belonging in a city which is in flux, living be-tween its hopes for a better future and fears of

further decline. Through their work, the artists wish to encourage view-ers to look at their city in a fresh way, uninfluenced

by predetermined points of view. The photographs themselves have been left intentionally untitled in order to leave viewers free to create their own individual narrative, and experience the images in a personal way, as titles inevitably determine interpretation

and limit the communicative power of vi-sions. The photographs are the work of artists Aniello Barone, Antonio Biasiucci, Salvino Campos, Stefano Cardone, Libero de Cunzo, Fabio Donato, Luciano Ferrara, Gianni Fiori-to, Guido Giannini, Carlo Hermann, Mimmo Jodice, Oreste Lanzetta, Mario Laporta, Raf-faela Mariniello, Pino Miraglia, Oreste Pipolo, Sergio Riccio, Luciano Romano, Mario Spada, Alain Volut and Aldo Capasso.

Greetings, On behalf of the citizens of the City of Cleveland, I am proud to welcome you to our 2013 Italian American Heritage Month Celebration. Cleveland is a diverse city. People from every corner of the world call our city home and they all play an integral role in creating the unique character of the City of Cleveland. Our local Italian community adds not only to the cultural diversity of Cleveland, but also to the development of our city in all areas from business to education. When we embrace diversity as one of our greatest strengths, we foster partnerships which allow us to accomplish feats, large and small. The progress that we have made thus far by learning and sharing cultures is the foundation on which we are building a brilliant future for our children and ourselves. By embracing our history and culture, we can create opportunities for increased prosperity, greater equality, and higher purpose in the City of Cleveland. Again, welcome and please join with me in celebrating Italian American Heritage Month in the City of Cleveland.

    Sincerely,

    Frank G. Jackson, Mayor
