INTRODUCTION
Italian high explosive anti-personnel band grenades•rs almost totally of the "offensive" type. Although theloading factor is usually low, the grenade bodies are notadapted for maximum fragmentation. The anti-tank grenadesare adaptations of the anti-personnel grenades with anadditional charge. There is no evidence of the use ofshaped charges in Italian anti-tank grenades. Likewise, the chemical grenades that are not frangible are 'made ofadaptedanti-personnel grenade bodies and mechanises with• chemical filler. The Italians did not make us• of therifle grenade but did use • mall mortar, not unlike •grenade projector, to fire • mortar grenade.
Italian grenades ere of the impact type. They inoor-porate an "all-ways" acting fuse which ern* in flight. Forthat reason, grenades found In the armed position are verysensitive and are • delicate disposal problem.

The incendiary grenade Is made from en ordinary one litre glees bottle, fittedwith • metal pressure cap, and containing en inflammable liquid. A fuse metal,.protected by • canes. cover, is fixed to the elde of the bottle by two rings ofcord. To the top of the fuse is attached a fine cord, which, on being pulled.fires the fuse.
To avoid accidental ignition by • chance drawing of the cord, the cord ins •smell wooden handle end is fixed to the neck of the bottle by • ring of thread.
Operation
Just before use, the wooden handle is freed b7 • light pull on the ring ofthread 'nice] is securing it to the neck of the bottle. The handle is thengiven a sharp pull and • small flame will spotter at the lower end of the fuse. The bottle should then be thrown with force against the target.
If the bottle is not thrown immediately It may burst before reaching thetarget. A minimum of two seconds is given between the lighting of the fuze andthe bursting of the bottle. The Italians consider the grenade to be • goodweapon for defense against A.F.V.'s at close quarters.
