In 2006, the Italian Heritageand Culture Committee ofNew York celebrates its 30thAnniversary, dedicated to "Cel-

ebrating Italian Genius: The Leonar-do daVinci Legacy."

This year’s theme is especially ap-propriate as daVinci represents ex-cellence and innovation in the ItalianArts and Sciences. Events throughoutOctober will highlight this all en-compassing theme of remarkable cre-ativity and outstanding accomplish-ment. Just think, 30 years of specialevents, concerts, exhibits, lecturesand proclamations to inform greaterNew York, the largest Italian city out-side Italy, of an important part of itsworld culture!

Beginning in 1976, Italian her-itage and culture in New York Citywas celebrated with week long eventswith Mayor Abraham Beame pro-claiming the first "Italian CultureWeek." By 1982, the cel-ebrations were dedicatedto an annual historicalidea or personality repre-sentative of the culture ofItaly. In 1985, the festiv-ities moved to Octoberto coincide with the

Nell’anno 2006 il Comita-to del Mese del RetaggioCulturale Italiano diNew York celebra il suo

30.mo anniversario dedicandolo alGenio Italiano: Il Patrimonio diLeonardo da Vinci.

L’argomento di quest’anno e`particolarmente appropriato essendoda Vinci prototipo di eccellenza edinnovazione apportate nel campodell’arte e delle scienze. Durante ilmese di ottobre le varie manifestazionimetteranno in evidenza questaeccezionale, illimitata creativita’.

Un trentennio di straordinarieventi, concerti, spettacoli, conferenzee proclami per mantenere vivido ilretaggio culturale italiano a NewYork, la citta` italiana piu` grande delmondo al di fuori dell’Italia.

Agli inizi del 1976 AbrahamBeame, sindaco di New York,proclamo` la prima "SettimanaCulturale Italiana" che fu

variamente celebratadurante l’intera settimana,dal 17 al 23 maggio. Dal1982 ogni manifestazionefu dedicata ad un‘ideastorica o ad un personaggiofamoso della storia ocultura italiana. Nel 1985 lacelebrazione fu prolungata

Columbus Day celebrations, and "Ital-ian Culture Week "became "ItalianCulture Month" and ultimately "Ital-ian Heritage and Culture Month."

As enthusiasm and participationgrew, the events actually begin in Sep-tember and overflow into November.One month is not enough! Also, theCommittee’s endeavors have been theinspiration and prototype for similarcelebrations in other cities, such asBoston and Los Angeles.

These 30 years of accomplish-ments grew from an idea of Dr. An-gelo Gimondo, then President of theItalian Bilingual Educators Associa-tion and subsequently Superinten-dent of Schools, District 30. Dr. Gi-mondo has served continuously asthe President and Chairman of theItalian Heritage and Culture Com-mittee’s Board of Directors. In 1976,in promoting a week long celebrationof Italian language and culture, Dr.Gimondo found like minded enthusi-asm in Rosamaria Riccio Pietanza,then President of the Italian Teacher’sAssociation. In 1976, thetwo colleagues proposedthe idea to Dr. Leo Bernar-do, Director for the Bu-reau of Foreign Lan-guages, who was easilypersuaded of the useful-ness and importance of

Questi trent’anni di positivirisultati traggono origine da un’ideadel Dott. Angelo Gimondo, alloraPresidente dell’Italian BilingualEducators Association esuccessivamente Superintendent ofSchools, District 30-New York. Atutt’oggi il Dott. Gimondo continuaad essere President and Chairmandel Comitato di volontari che dirigee coordina le celebrazioni del Mesedel Retaggio Culturale Italiano neicinque "boroughs" di New York. Nel1976, nel promuovere una Settimanadella lingua e cultura italiana, il Dott.

Gimondo trovo’ lo stessoparere ed entusiasmonell’allora President dell’ItalianTeacher’s Association, RosaRiccio Pietanza. I due colleghidiscussero la loro idea con ilDott. Leo Bernardo, Direttoredel Bureau of Foreign

the project. Dr. Gimondo was ap-pointed Citywide-Coordinator, andthe first celebration was put forth un-der the auspices of the Bureau of For-eign Languages of the Board of Edu-cation of the City of New York. In1977, Ms. Pietanza became city Co-coordinator, and the Board of Edu-cation sponsored the second year’sevents.

In 1978, a committee began toevolve. Dr. Stephen Aiello, then Pres-ident of the New York City Board ofEducation and later President JimmyCarter’s special assistant for ethnic af-fairs, became the first HonoraryChairman of the "Italian CultureWeek Committee." The followingyear, Italy’s Consul General in NewYork, Allesandro Cortese De Bosis,became Honorary Co-Chairman,and a Board of Directors wasformed with Angelo Gimondo asChairman and Ms. Pietanza as Pres-ident. Mico Delianova Licastro, anentrepreneur and producer of Italiancultural events, became ExecutiveDirector. In 1980,Josephine Belli succeededMs. Pietanza as CityWide Coordinator. Inaddition to Dr. Gimon-do, Mr. Licastro and Ms.Belli, founding memberswho have served actively

and continuously on the Committeeinclude George Altomare, Dr. Bar-bara Gerard and Dr. Mario Fratti. In1981, Professor Irene Impellizzeri,who later became Vice President ofthe Board of Education, was appoint-ed as another Honorary Chair.

The Committee has expanded toits present 50 volunteer memberBoard, including Officers, Commit-tee Chairs, Honorary Chairs, Ad-ministrative Assistants and Board ofAdvisors. The Committee membersrepresent eminent representatives ofthe Italian and Italian American com-munity. Many Committee membersare officers or members of leadingItalian organizations and bring theknowledge and support of theseagencies in a collaborative effort for"Italian Culture and HeritageMonth." Some represent statewideand national organizations, such asJack Como, President, Italian Amer-ican Legal Defense and Higher Edu-cation Fund; John Mustaro, Presi-dent, The United Pugliesi Federationof the Metropolitan Area;Joseph Sciame, Past Na-tional President, Sons ofItaly; and Lea Serra, Pres-ident Emeritus, Guild ofItalian American Actors.Other distinguished mem-bers of the Board, who

have served over the past, are JudgeDominic Massaro, New York StateSupreme Court; Professor GaetanoCipolla, President, Casa Sicilia; andPaul Patane, Board of Education.Among the Committee are severalCavalieri and Commendatori, deco-rated by the Italian Government fortheir individual contributions. Onesuch personality is Judge DominicMassaro, who was given the title ofCavaliere di Gran Croce, the highestItalian Government recognition ofmerit and one of only ten suchnamed. For several decades the Ad-ministrative Assistants Tina Alfanoand Joseph Mongitore have workedtirelessly on behalf of the Committee.

Initially, the Committee’s aim wasto preserve and promote the study ofthe Italian language, but the scopesoon expanded. The present Com-mittee is involved not only in pro-moting, coordinating, presentingand/or producing activities that cele-brate Italian heritage and culture butalso in educating the general publicabout Italians’ positivecontributions to America.A decision early on was torepresent the whole cycleof Italian culture, bothpopular and classical, in-cluding folkloric tradi-tions to opera; pre-Roman

Una di queste personalita`e` Judge Dominic Massaro a cui e`stato dato il titolo onorifico di Cavalieredi Gran Croce, la piu` alta onorificenzaconcessa dal Governo italiano, solo aduno dei dieci decorati.

Per parecchi decenni Tina Alfanoe Joseph Mongitore, in qualita` diAdministrative Assistants, hannolavorato incessantemente per conto enome del Comitato.

Agli inizi lo scopo del Comitatoera la preservazione e la promozionedello studio della lingua italiana, malo scopo si e` poi esteso. L’interessedell’attuale Comitato non e’ soltantoquello di promuovere, coordinare,presentare e /o produrre attivita` che

celebrano l’eredita` e lacultura italiana, ma anchedi diffondere nel pubblicola conoscenzadell’immenso contributoapportato dagli italianinella formazione dellagrande America. Si decise

to the Roman Empire and MiddleAges, onto the painters, scientists andscholars of the Renaissance, the he-roes of the Risorgimento and the"personaggi" of the modern ItalianRepublic; the contributions of theExplorers of the Old World to the im-migrants, as well as the contempo-rary artists, musicians, writers, scien-tists, civic leaders and entrepreneursof the New. Taken together this isItalian and Italian American heritageand culture.

The Committee’s initial and on-going commitment to language andeducation continues to be accom-plished by involving the Board of Ed-ucation in such activities as theme re-lated poetry and essay contests, withthe award of a trip to Italy, which hasengaged the interest of children of allages. Every October, the students ofLa Scuola d’Italia Gugliemo Marconihave actively participated throughsinging performances at Committeeevents and engaging in other schoolbased activities, under the direction ofProf. Bianca PadolecchiaGoodrich, Headmistress,and Pia Pedicini, DeputyHead and Director for Ad-missions. At the Millen-nium, a high school posterdesign contest broughtforth the annual poster

di rappresentare la cultura italiananella sua interezza , quella popolare equella classica, dal folklore all’opera,dall’eta` preistorica al Medioevo, ipittori e gli scultori del Rinascimento,gli eroi del Risorgimento, personalita`della Repubblica Italiana, il contributodegli esploratori del Mondo Anticoall’emigrazione cosi` come gli artisti,musicisti, scrittori, scienziati, autorita`civiche ed imprenditori contemporanei.Tutto cio` nell’insieme forma l’eredita`culturale italiana.

Il proposito iniziale ed attuale delComitato verso lo studio e lapreservazione della lingua italianacontinua ad essere effettuatocoinvolgendo il Board of Educationin alcune attivita` quali concorsi nelcampo della poesia e componimentoavente come premio un viaggio inItalia, cosa che ha attratto l’interessedi ragazzi di tutte le eta`. Durante ilmese di ottobre gli alunni della Scuolad’Italia Guglielmo Marconi hannosempre partecipato attivamente conspettacoli canori ed altre avvincentirappresentazioni sotto la direzione

della Preside, Prof.ssa BiancaPadolecchia Goodrich e dellaVice Preside, Pia Pedicini, Inoccasione del Millennio ilconcorso indetto all’HighSchool per il disegno delmanifesto commemorativo hadato la versione di un

with contemporary symbols, depict-ing Italian soccer, cinema, wine, mu-sic, immigration and Italy.

Over the years, with the initiativeand coordination of Board members,there has been an expansion of localProclamations to include all of theNew York Borough Presidents, theCity Council, Comptroller and everyMayor, beginning with Mayor Beam,then Edward Koch, David Dinkins,Rudolph Giuliani and MichaelBloomberg, whose celebrations arenow held annually at Gracie Man-sion. Three New York State gover-nors, Hugh Carey and, in particularthe two succeeding governors, bothof Italian heritage, Governor MarioCuomo (83-94), whose support waspresent from the beginning, and Gov-ernor George Pataki, (95-present)have held annual special events. TheCommittee members who have initi-ated and coordinated worthwhileProclamation events include NancyIndelicato (Manhattan Borough Pres-ident, New York State Legislatures),Joseph Sciame (QueensBorough President), JoanMigliori (Staten IslandBorough President), Dr.Barbara Gerard (Comp-troller, City Council), Mi-co Delianova Licastro(Mayor). The past two

governors’ representatives for Italianaffairs, Rosemarie Gallina Santange-lo and Claudia Massimo Berns, en-sured meaningful, well attended andwell received Governor’s events dur-ing every October. This year the NewYork State Senate and Assemblyadopted a joint Legislative Resolu-tion honoring the 30th AnniversaryCelebration, spearheaded by Assem-blywoman RoAnn Destito, President,Conference of Italian American Leg-islatures. Even the Presidents of theUnited States have issued a Procla-mation for the Month.

October, the Committee’s request forItalian Government involvement wasgranted with their bringing from Italy"Italy on Stage", a program of the-atrical performances, cinema series,concerts and exhibits under the spon-sorship of the Italian Ministry of For-eign Affairs. Giancarlo Riccio, for-mer Vice-Consul in New York, and atthe time a high Foreign Ministry offi-cial, worked tirelessly. His effortswere sensational, bringing to NewYork the most famous names in Italianculture and show business. Uto Ughi,world famous violist, performed; acinema series dedicated to the Maestroof Italian Comedy, Alberto Sordi, wasshown; an exhibit on actress ElenoraDuse, Italian popular musical groups’performances and a great deal of the-ater were realized.

This successful experiment wasrepeated in 1987 with a second edi-tion of "Italy on Stage", even richerin names and productions than itspredecessor. That year, in one monthalone, the whole great tradition of theItalian theatre was on dis-play on the stages of theBig Apple: from directorLuca Ronconi’s reading ofGoldoni’s "La ServaAmorosa", an almost for-gotten work by the greatVenetian playwright; and

the Teatro Stabile di Catania produc-tion of Pirandello’s "Berreto aSonagli", interpreted by the great Si-cilian actor Turi Ferro; to the "Pul-cinella" staged by Maurizio Scaparoand based on a text by directorRoberto Rossellini, with the actorand singer Massimo Ranieri behindthe Neapolitan mask. Music wasrepresented by the Teatro San Carloof Naples, celebrating its 250th An-niversary. Two works by Pergolesiwere staged, "La Serva Padrona" and"Stabat Mater", directed by Robertode Simone. Finally the exhibition,"Silver from the Treasure of San Gen-naro", was incredibly striking for itsbeauty and originality. The 1987 edi-tion of "Italy on Stage" was as grandas it was expensive. A great success,but also the last with the direct par-ticipation of the Italian Government’sproducing events for "Italian Her-itage and Culture Month."

In recent years, the Italian Gov-ernment, through the Italian Con-sulate in New York, has sponsoredkick-off receptions for theMonth. In October 1996,Consul General FrancoMistretta recognized pro-fessional women who,along with their careers,volunteered time and tal-ent to the Italian commu-

Several of the Committee mem-bers received, on behalf of the ItalianGovernment, this Distinguished Ser-vice Award in recognition of out-standing contributions and dedicatedservice to the Italian American com-munity. In 2002, Consul GeneralGiorgio Radicati gave a Certificate ofRecognition to several of the ItalianHeritage and Culture Committeemembers for their work on behalf ofItalian Culture Month. PresentlyConsul General Antonio Bandini hasbeen instrumental in the approval offunds toward the cost of publishingthe Month’s posters and booklets.The Directors of the Italian CulturalInstitute, likewise, have always col-laborated in the promotion of eventscelebrating Italian culture. Their rep-resentative, Board member GiulianaRidolfi Cardillo, has effectively coor-dinated their October activities withthe Committee’s. The Committee isotherwise grateful for the Institute’shosting the Committee’s monthlymeetings for more than a decade.

Other organizationshave been significant con-tributors. Since the Com-mittee’s inception, Dr. Gi-mondo has vigorously ledthe effort to make thefunding of its endeavors areality. He has always

NIAF, through the efforts ofFrances Rello, an educator and for-mer Board member, contributedsome funding. From time to time Mi-co Delianova Licastro has obtainedsponsors for the funding of certainprojects, such as the production ofthe posters. Grants written by Nan-cy Indelicato have been submitted tothe NY State Council on the Arts.Collaborating with Berardo Par-adiso, President, ItalyAmerica Chamber ofCommerce, and with oth-er organizations, such asthe United Nations’ Il Cir-colo Italiano, has enrichedand expanded the pro-grams. viduals in the community have alsosustained the Committee’s efforts.All are recognized in the annual Cal-endar of Events, all believing in theimportance of Italian heritage andculture.

It is important to review here theannual themes and highlight some ofthe events, representative of the di-versity and quality of the annual pre-sentations. Each was not only an en-joyable, contemporary culturalexperience at the time, but also an ed-ucation in Italian history illustrativeof the impact of Italian genius. Cer-tainly serious, actually the eventswere also fun. Through them theCommittee has positively influencedtens of thousands of people. Even theexperienced Committee members,sometimes, found themselves scram-bling for their history books and en-cyclopedias to learn for themselvesabout some unknown aspect orundiscovered personality of Italianheritage and culture. Also, whetheran opera performance, academic lec-ture on the themes, themaking of a pasta map ofItaly or a preview of the film farce "JohnnyStecchino", Italian cul-ture it is.

Giuseppe Garibaldi, the week was ded-icated to the "Hero of the TwoWorlds", the protagonist of theRisorgimento. Thanks to the collab-oration of New York University andits Center for Contemporary ItalianCulture, an excellent program wasproduced in front of the statue ofGaribaldi in New York City’s Wash-ington Square, with a proclamationby Mayor Ed Koch and in the pres-ence of the Italian hero’s great-grand-daughter, Anita Garibaldi. At theuniversity, lectures were presentedand film screenings featured suchclassics as Blasetti’s "1860", Viscon-ti’s "Il Gattopardo", Rossellini’s"Vanina Vanini" and the Tavianibrother’s "Allonsanfan", culminatingin Pastrone’s 1913 masterpiece,"Cabiria", with text by D’Annuzioand music by Ildebrando Pizzetti. Al-so presented during that week wereconcerts of the "Musician of theRisorgimento", Giuseppe Verdi.

During the week in 1984, "TheYear of the Etruscans" traced Italianheritage to pre-Roman an-cient history. For the firstOctober celebrations in1985, "Building Ameri-ca", the Italian Americancontribution to this nationwas underscored. In1986, to coincide with the

national Centennial celebrations,"Year of Lady Liberty" was chosen,again saluting the Italian Americanimmigration experience and contri-butions. 1987 was the "Year of theU.S. Constitution: Mazzei and theItalian Contribution", the tribute toFilippo Mazzei and his contributionto the Declaration of Independence;1988 was dedicated to "LorenzoDaPonte/Academia", the first pro-moter of Italian culture in America,sponsor of the first New York OperaHouse, first Professor of Italian lan-guage at Columbia University and li-brettist to Mozart. During the prioryear for the celebration of the an-niversary of DaPonte’s becoming anAmerican citizen, the Committee col-laborated with the Native New York-ers Historical Society and CalvaryCemetery to research the location ofDaPonte’s final resting place. For theoccasion and of great historical sig-nificance was the confirmation thatDaPonte rests in an unmarked gravein the free ground at Calvary Ceme-tery where they erectedand dedicated an appro-priate memorial head-stone. In 1989, the themewas "Italians ReachingOut: Antonio Meucci, In-ventor of the Telephoneand Mother Cabrini, Mis-

In 1994, "Italian Amer-icans in Law: from Beccaria toScalia" hailed the contributions ofgreat Italian jurists over the centuries.In 1995, "Gugliemo Marconi: Cen-tennial of the Radio" was markedwith events with his daughters GioaMarconi Braga and Princess ElettraMarconi participating. Since his in-vention, communication has neverbeen the same.

Public and private schools, ashas been their annual tradition, en-thusiastically joined in with oral his-tories, Italian music, research reports,exhibits, poetry recitals, food presen-tations, contests, posters and folkdances. Also a major highlight wasthe presentation at the Museum ofNatural History of "Leonardo’sCodex Leichester: A Masterpiece ofScience", the only manuscript byLeonardo in private hands and theonly one in America. A special writ-ten history of the Committee, someincorporated here, was produced forthe occasion, written in Italian by Ste-fano Vaccara, journalist, translatedinto English by editor KristenMoehlmann.

In 1997, the theme was dedicatedto "The Voyages of GiovanniCaboto: 500th Anniver-sary" of his landing in No-va Scotia on June 24,1497. Lectures, such as"How Giovanni CabotoBecame John Cabot", byChief Judge Emeritus Ed-ward D. Re, shed light on

During that October al-so the memorable "Mechanical Mar-vels: Invention in the Age ofLeonardo" was exhibited at the Lib-erty Gallery of the World FinancialCenter. It included 50 remarkableworking models of the machines ofthe Renaissance artist-engineer, cov-ering from the dome of the FlorentineCathedral to the death of Leonardo,constructed with the same materialsand construction employed in the Re-naissance. The multimedia exhibit,which included visual animation ofthe machines in operation and virtu-al reality of his great achievements,was organized by the Institute andMuseum of History of Science, Flo-rence, Italy, and Finemeccanica.

world, was realized by Franco Mar-icchiolo, photographer from Messi-na, Sicily. The exhibit at St. John’sUniversity featured many New Yorkpersonalities, including several Boardmembers. That year also marked thefirst Zerilli-Marimo`prize for Italianliterature.

In 1999, the immigration experi-ence was elaborated in "The Italiansof New York: Five Centuries ofStruggle and Achievement." Thehighlight was the John D. CalandraItalian American Institute’s presenta-tion at the New York Historical Soci-ety of one of the most comprehensiveand ambitious cultural exhibit of itskind. Planned over three years withthe assistance of prominent scholarsin Italian American studies and underthe directorship of Dr. Joseph Scelsa,the four month long exhibit focusedon the important phases of ItalianAmerican life in New York City, in-cluding the great migration, commu-nity life, building New York, Italianpolitics, cultural life and ethnic iden-tity. At the exhibit’s inau-gural reception a collec-tor’s edition of thesculpture of an ItalianAmerican immigrant fam-ily, entitled "La BellisimaAmerica: America theBeautiful," was also pre-

Aformer Board member, GiuseppeZagame, in collaboration with theUnited States Postal Service, spon-sored a temporary postal station ofone of his many annual special picto-rial, slogan hand stamp cancellationsof important Italian personalities.

At the Millennium, celebrationscentered on "Italy in the Year 2000:Italian Heritage and Cultural Rootsat the Threshold of the Millennium."The emphasis was on contemporaryfashion, science and art. Italy, thefifth leading nation economicallyworldwide, heralded in the Millenni-um with their inimitablefashion and design, sport-ing their essential "tele-fonini", since long beforeit was fashionable inAmerica. This alsowas the kick-off campaign to restorethe entire church, of which the walls,columns, ceiling, other murals, sta-tions of the cross and portraits of themartyrs and saints represent thelargest body of Brumidi’s artworkoutside the Capitol. A little knownfact was Brumidi’s being commis-sioned to paint this church beforecoming to America and his workingin New York while the United StatesCongress was in session as he wascontemporaneously decorating theCapitol dome. As a result Ms. Indel-icato remains on the Honorary Advi-sory Board of Brumidi/NY Restora-tion Committee. In 2005, on thebicentennial anniversary of his birth,the celebrations reached the UnitedStates Capitol with the national gov-ernment proclaiming his contributionas the "Michelangelo ofthe United States Capi-tol."

Caruso’s lifeand times also were expoundedthrough lectures, original recordingsand film screenings. Opera: Italy’sgift to the world, beginning in 1600.

In 2004, "Amerigo Vespucci: AnItalian Name for America the Beauti-ful" was befitting for the 550th An-niversary of his birth as he was thefirst to claim that this continent was,indeed, a New World, not part ofAsia! Among many celebrations, theCommemorative Concert of thisgreat Italian navigator was producedat the DiCapo Opera Theater.

In 2005, "Giuseppe Mazzini: ThePolitical Idealist of the Italian Strug-gle for Independence" gave homageto the Italian patriot of the Risorgi-mento, who dedicated himself to thecause of Italian independence andunity. The 200th An-niversary of his birth wascelebrated with a series ofconcerts by Il Coro delLunedi, the acclaimed 40member chorus, fromRome, Italy, led by Mae-stro Cesare Pocci and Fa-

If a picture is worth a thousandwords, Italian art and design is wortha million. It certainly made the goodword travel. As technology grew sodid the Committee’s expertise and so-phistication with the visual arts andmedia. Every year the original col-ored posters and the Calendar ofEvents booklet capture the themethrough art, becoming collector’sitems. 10,000 are distrib-uted annually. Thethemed posters have beenby such artists as FrankPalombo of the BronxBorough President’s of-fice, who has rendered

GerryCastaneda was the high school studentwho designed the Millennium poster.Constance del Vecchio Maltese de-picted Verdi. Starting in 2003, Boardmember John Battista DeSantis hasprovided creative direction and de-sign of several posters, including the30th Anniversary design, and otherCommittee visual materials. For thefirst time, a second graphic poster, de-signed by Joseph Cipri, was present-ed along with a tradition-al portrait poster ofMazzini.

Television has broughtnational recognition and at-tention to the Committee’sendeavors.

During Dr. Gimondo’s tenure asSuperintendent of CSD 30, Mr. Den-nis Swanson, President of NBC, wasassigned to Dr. Gimondo’s district as"Superintendent for a Day", thus acordial relationship developed be-tween them. It was at that time thatDr. Gimondo requested Mr. Swan-son’s assistance in the production ofbrief videos reflecting the Month’stheme, which could be broadcast sev-eral times during October. Subse-quently Mr. Swanson moved to CBSwhere Dr. Gimondo met with himand was introduced to the Vice Pres-ident of CBS, Mr. Russo, who agreedto produce the videos. Dr. Gimondoformed a committee including JohnDabbene, Board member and Na-tional President, OSIA Commissionfor Social Justice, and Claudia Mas-simo Berns, Board Member and Gov-ernor’s Pataki’s representative to theItalian community, who met withCBS officials to plan the content ofthe videos. Mr. Dabbene became theCommittee’s liaison in pro-viding CBS with materialand information related toeach month’s theme for thepast four years. These Ital-ian minutes on relatedtheme topics are certainlyeducational and a positive

The Committee’s letterheadhas an ever changing logo, reflectingevery year’s themes. Partnering firstwith Joseph Scelsa, Dean of the Ca-landra Italian American Institute andMaria Fosco, its former Director ofAdministration and Community Pro-grams, and then Geoffrey Claroni,formerly of the Calandra Instituteand now Director of Programs,Westchester Italian Cultural Center,along with Rosa Casiello O’Day’sever constant input, has ensured thepublishing of a very professional andever expanding Calendar of Events.10,000 copies of the now 6o pagebooklet, with informational book-marks produced by John De Santisin collaboration with the Garibal-di-Meucci Museum, are distributedannually.

Aside from promoting,coordinating and produc-ing individual events, forthe past several years theCommittee has spon-sored, sometimes in col-laboration with others,

Also,"Napoli-NY Andata e Ritorno", aone woman show by Elena Bonelli,was presented at Columbia Universi-ty’s Casa Italiana Piccolo Teatro. Af-ter 9/11, there have been annualMemorial Concerts at the United Na-tions in collaboration with the ItalianAmerican Chamber of Commerceand the United Nations’ Il CircoloItaliano. In 2002, the Brumidi cele-brations at the Church of the HolyInnocents and Our Lady of theScapular and St. Stephens Churchfollowed. They continued on withthe special piano recital in 2003 andthen in 2004 with the Verdi operaconcert, both at the DiCapo OperaTheater. In 2005, there was Il Corodel Lunedi’s U.S. Tournee` in NewYork and Washington, D.C. In thisspecial 30th Anniversary year a cel-ebration is being planned by acommittee of Board members:Maria Marinello, Chair, ClaudiaMassimo Berns, Dr. Barbara Ger-ard, Nancy Indelicato andJosephine Maietta. It is expectedto be an elegant, well de-served congratulatorycelebration of 30 years,well done. The Commit-tee’s daVinci award willbe given that evening.

Nel 2006 il "da Vinci award" sara`dato alla rinomata Baronessa MariucciaZerilli-Marimo`, fondatrice della CasaItaliana Zerilli-Marimo` e "Trustee"della New York University, per il suocontributo alla promozione delle Arti,Scienze, Lingua e Cultura italiana.

La prima scultura del da Vinci fudisegnata dall’emerito MaestroDomenic Mazzoni, un artista italo-americano di New Jersey; attraversol’interessamento di Ralph La Gambamembro del "Board". Attualmente e`opera del Maestro Silvio Amelio, unoscultore italiano di Taverna, Italia, ilquale ha anche donato al Comitato lostampo del medaglione.

Da Vinci, il simbolo italiano dieccellenza, luminosita` ed ispirazione,riporta alla mente quanto il Comitatodel Retaggio Culturale Italiano diNew York ha rappresentato edeffettuato in un trentennio di lavoro.

Qualunque il bisogno,qualunque l’idea si e`sempre trovata una risorsa,un volontario, il desideriodi farlo diventare realta`.L’intero Comitato e` statocertamente lodevole.

daVinci, the Italian symbol of ex-cellence, enlightenment and inspira-tion. daVinci brings to mind whatthe Italian Heritage and CultureCommittee of New York has repre-sented and has accomplished in their30 years of work. Whatever theneed, whatever the idea there has al-ways been a resource, a volunteer, adesire to make it happen. The Com-mittee’s whole, certainly, has beenfantastically greater than its parts.

Thirty years ago, the idea began withtwo people, Dr. Angelo Gimondo andMs. Rosamaria Riccio Pietanza, firstwanting to promote Italian languageand then more encompassingly Italianculture and heritage. It evolved into alarge standing, prestigious Committee.It began as a week in March and evolvedinto hundreds of events throughout Oc-tober, in all five Boroughs and in thegreater Tri-State area. Beginning withthe Board of Education, it now involvescollaborative efforts with important Ital-ian and Italian American organizations,universities, colleges, and leading cultur-al institutions. It reaches an ever widen-ing national and international audience,attracting supporters and be-lievers throughout Americaand Italy. It has highlighted,honored and brought to lightpast and current contributionsof Italian heritage and culture.It has changed negative stereo-types into positive perceptions,inspired many, including new

Il duo sievolse poi in un ampio comitatoformato da significative e prominentipersonalita`. Da una settimana dicelebrazione nel mese di marzo sipasso` poi ad un centinaio dimolteplici attivita` nei cinque"boroughs" e nei Tre-Stati durantel’intero mese di ottobre. Attualmenteil Comitato gode della collaborazionedel "Board of Education" e delle piu`rilevanti organizzazioni, universita`,collegi ed istituzioni culturali di altoprestigio sia italiane che italo-americane. Riesce a raggiungere unvasto uditorio nazionale edinternazionale suscitando fiducia edattraendo sostenitori in America ed inItalia. Ha posto in evidenza, onorato emesso in luce la grande ed importanteinfluenza passata e presente del retaggioculturale italiano. Ha avuto la capacita`di trasformare i stereotipi negativi inconcezioni positive. E` statod’ispirazione a molti, soprattutto allenuove generazioni ed ha garantito lacontinuita` nel serbare il patrimonio

italiano.

Nell’incamminarci verso ilnuovo Millennio il Comitatosi propone di espandere leattivita` ed impegnarsiulteriormente verso le futuregenerazioni soprattuttoattraverso l’ampliamento

As we march into the new Millennium,the Committee’s goals include the expan-sion of events and a further commitment tothe coming generations, especially throughlanguage and culture in the schools. In1976, 10,000 students studied Italian ingreater New York, now 37,000 students ofItalian in the Tri State area; 750,000 stu-dents are studying Italian nationwide.

The vision remains the establish-ment of a permanent cultural centerwith supporting staff. However, withor without the actual physical structure,equipment or staff, the Committee con-tinues with its dedicated members, vol-unteering their time, their talent; shar-ing their enthusiasm and never endingperpetual pride and belief in the legiti-macy and importance of Italian her-itage and culture…passing it on…striv-ing for excellence…always celebratingthe Italian genius…always hoping toenlighten and inspire.

Tuttavia,con o senza la struttura fisica,attrezzatura e personale , il Comitatocontinua la sua opera insieme con isuoi dedicati membri, dando il lorotempo e talento su base volontaria,apportando il contributo del loroentusiasmo, l’orgoglio senza fine olimiti e la fede nella legittimita` edimportanza del retaggio culturaleitaliano ...tramandandolo…lottandoper eccellere….celebrando sempre ilGenio Italiano……sempre sperando diessere d’ispirazione.
