What we want to know: HistoryItaly is made up of 20 regione,

each with a unique culture and dialect. These regions were mostly broken up until the 1800s when a movement started for unification of the northern, central, and southern areas. Most Italian children grow up learning “proper Italian” and their regional dialect.

What we want to know: ClothingSimpler things come from Italy too! Jeans were

first invented in Genova, Italy in the 1500s for sailors.

The city of Genova often traded with cloth merchants of nearby French cities. The French sent over a tough, blue fabric which the Italians used to make outfits for sailors. These came to be called Gênes, after the French word for the city of Genova. We call them “jeans” today!
