It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, No It Is A Drone!
Drone Program Highlighted at 365 Club Breakfast
Over 150 donors attended
the 2017 365 Club Breakfast
at Turtle Run on January 19.
The breakfast is an oppor-
tunity to thank those present
for their continued support
(see page 3 for a list of 365
Club members) and to ask
new attendees to pledge at
least $1.00 a day in support
of the students attending
Danville Public School. (If
you would like to become a
365 Club member, please
breakfast, though, is spent
with teachers and students
explaining the impact our
donors have on their educa-
tion. This year was no ex-
ception. Along with a
presentation about the Mo-
bile Science Lab, highlighted
in the October issue of the
DPSF News, there was a
presentation on Pre-
Advanced Placement Cours-
es (see page 2), a perfor-
mance by the South View
Upper Elementary School
Choir, directed by Jennifer
and David Woodrow, and a
most impressive presentation
of the North Ridge Middle
School and South View Up-
per Elementary School
Drone Program.
The Drone Program was pre-
sented by North Ridge Mid-
dle School teacher Josef
Dicken and eighth-grade
North Ridge Middle School
student Joseph Irons.
Donors from the Danville
Public School Foundation
provided one-half of the
$14,000 cost to implement
the drone program, and
Danville School District 118
provided the other half.
Both schools were provid-
ed four Phantom 3 profes-
sional drones equipped with
a camera, iPad minis to
control the drone, plus an
accompanying curriculum.
The Drone Program is not
just about flying the drone.
Students learn how to code
the drone to control its
flight. Students also re-
ceived enhanced educa-
tional opportunities in physi-
cal science (force, speed,
lift, and drag) .
Students are provided a
connection to automated
technology, providing real
world specific practices of
how the drones could be
used in search, rescue, ag-
riculture, and military opera-
tions.
A video was shown of Jo-
seph Irons flying the drone
over North Ridge Middle
School. It may be viewed
by clicking on the drone
shown below:

President Charles Hall Appointed Circuit Judge
Appointment requires Hall to relinquish his position on Danville Public School Foundation Board
tions of the Foundation.
In 2009, Mr. Hall became president of
the Foundation, and during his leader-
ship, the Foundation has increased its
visibility in the community, established
a solid financial footing for the future
and has awarded over $350,000 in
programming to the Danville Public
Schools. In 2016, the Foundation re-
ceived the Award of Excellence from
the Illinois State Board of Education.
The Foundation Board wishes Judge
Hall all the best and thanks him for his
service to the children attending
Danville Public Schools.
Charles Hall, a ten-year member of
the Danville Public School Founda-
tion Board, has been appointed Cir-
cuit Judge for the Fifth Judicial Cir-
cuit, which includes Danville. His ap-
pointment was announced by Illinois
Supreme Court Justice Rita Garman
and becomes effective March 1.
As a result of this appointment, Mr.
Hall will be required to resign from the
Foundation’s Board.
Mr. Hall, a 1965 Danville High School
graduate, first joined the Foundation
Board in 2006 and was involved in
the decision to hire the first Executive
Director to lead the day-to-day opera-Charles Hall
Pre-Advanced Placement Courses to Begin
Funded in part from a grant from Iroquois Federal Foundation
At the 365 Club Breakfast, Curricu-
lum Director, MaryEllen Bunton,
explained to those in attendance
about the new Pre-Advanced
Placement (Pre-AP) curriculum that
will be offered for those students in
grades 6-8.
Advanced Placement (AP) courses
currently in place at Danville High
School afford students the oppor-
tunity to experience the rigor of col-
lege course work, and depending
upon final testing results, provides
college credit for those courses.
Currently, Danville High School
offers 13 different AP courses.
In an effort to prepare upper ele-
mentary and middle school stu-
dents for AP course work, the Dan-
ville Public School Foundation, with
the assistance of a grant from Iro-
quois Federal Foundation, is help-
ing Danville District 118 to fund the
new Pre-AP program at South View
Upper Elementary and North Ridge
Middle School.
These courses will be offered to
many students who have not quali-
fied for gifted programing and will
allow them to participate in rigorous
curriculum in both English Lan-
guage Arts and Mathematics.
Professional development for
teachers will begin in the spring,
and courses will be offered for stu-
dents in the 2017-18 school year.

Curt Ellis Elected Foundation Board President
Mark Lindvahl elected Vice-President
February brought new leadership to
the Danville Public School Foundation
as Curt Ellis was elected president.
Curt has served as vice-president
since 2009. Curt and his wife, Rhon-
da, have four children all who have
attended or are attending Danville
Public Schools. He is a local State
Farm Insurance agent and has
served on the Foundation Board
since 2008.
The Board also elected Mark
Lindvahl as vice-president. Mark
is a retired principal from Danville
Public Schools. His wife, Marty, is
also a retired educator from Dan-
ville Public Schools. Mark is cur-
rently the Choral Director for St.
James United Methodist Church,
and he is a member of the musical
group, Doc Ashton and the Root
Canals. Mark has been a member of
the Foundation Board since 2011.
We wish them both well in their new
positions.

Polar Express Continues to Delight Children
The kindergarten and first-grade students, in what is becoming a holi-
day tradition for the Danville Public School Foundation, traveled to the
Presence United Samaritan's Festival of Trees at the Palmer Arena to
hear the reading of the Polar Express. Conductors and chefs went to
each school aboard the Polar Express (school buses) and greeted the
children as they prepared for their journey to the North Pole (Palmer
Arena). Once at the North Pole, they were greeted by elves who es-
corted the boys and girls to their seats where Mayor Scott Eisenhauer
read the magical story.
After the reading, the children toured the North Pole to see all the
beautiful Christmas trees and wreaths on display and received a sam-
ple of gingerbread cookies.
Transportation for this event was once again provided courtesy of the
Julius W. Hegeler II Foundation.
Boys and girls arrive at the North Pole.
