It’s a Wonderful Life – Project

Lesson 1

L.O – To label and describe the functions of the parts of the digestive system in

humans

Humans digest food. They have a digestive system that allows them to do that.

What does digest mean?

Digest means to break down food so that the body can use it

What is the digestive system?

The digestive system is the system of organs that get food in and out of the

body and makes use of the food for the body.

Let’s now have a look at the different stages of the digestive system and

look at the function of the organs at each stage.

Activity

Use the word bank to help you label the diagram correctly.

Lesson 2

L.O – To identify the different types of teeth in humans

There are different types of teeth.

Molars, canines, incisor and pre molars

incisor molar premolar canine

Choose different colours to complete the key and colour in the teeth.

Answers

Activity 4

How do we look after our teeth?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDZXSMU2lAk

Write a guide for younger children telling them how to look after their teeth

Activity 5

Make a model mouth or tooth.

Activity 6

Life cycles

What is a life cycle?

Life cycle means the stages a living thing goes through during its life. In some cases

the process is slow, and the changes are gradual. Look at the life cycle of a butterfly.

All butterflies have "complete metamorphosis." To grow into an adult they go through 4

stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult.

Make a model of the life cycle of a butterfly

Can you draw the life cycle of other living things?

Activity 7

L. O – To construct and label food chains using scientific vocabulary

What is a food chain?

All living organisms need food to survive. Plants make their own food in their leaves. Plants are eaten by animals. These animals then become food for other animals, creating a food chain.

There are 4 important parts to the food chain.

producer consumer

predator prey

Activity 8

Draw the food chain and label it using the words prey, producer, consumer and

predator

Draw your own food chains labelling the different parts using the scientific

words.

Above is a diagram of a food web. A food web consists of many food chains

within an ecosystem. An eco system is a community of organisms. An organism is

a living thing.

Look at the food web below

Can you identify different food chains from the food web?

Draw your own food web for a habitat of your own choice.

Activity 9

Healthy eating

We know how important it is to eat well. When choosing what to eat you need to

think of your plate as being divided into sections. The smallest section should be

for diary produce. The next smallest is for meat, fish. If you are a vegetarian

or vegan than you would choose substitutes for meat and fish like tofu, beans or

pulses. The largest section should be made up of fruit or vegetables. It is good

if you can have at least 5 portions of fruit and veg. Then the next biggest

section on your plate should be for potatoes, rice or pasta. You should drink

plenty of water to keep your body hydrated. Every once in a while it is ok to

have a small treat, some chocolate, sweets or a cake. Use the eatwell guide, the

plate and foods to create your own healthy meal.

Extra activity

Why not ask your mum or dad if you can cook some part of the family meal, even

if you prepare the salad or choose what vegetables to have for dinner. You could

peel the vegetables. You could also try asking mum and dad to host your own

‘Bake Off’ at home, with everyone being responsible for one part of the meal.

Activity 10

Why is exercise important? Watch the video clip and identify the 10 benefits

of exercise.

https://www.parents.com/fun/sports/exercise/10-benefits-of-physical-activity/

Design a poster that tells us the benefits of exercise on the body.

Think about the following points when designing your poster;

Why is exercise important?

How does our body respond to exercise?

What different types of exercise can we do?
