Ofsted update for schools on Careers Statutory Guidance
In their recent School Inspection Update, Ofsted have included a piece about
the new careers statutory guidance which outlines its main recommendations
and the expectations of schools, including that:
Every school begins to offer every young person at least one encounter with employers per year,
from Years 7 to 13 by 2020
From September 2018, every school appoints a named person to the role of careers leader
From September 2018, every school publishes details of its careers programme.

The Gatsby Benchmark Toolkit – Sent to all Headteachers
This toolkit has been sent to all Headteachers in England along with the Careers
and Enterprise Company (CEC) summary of the governments Careers Strategy
and Statutory Guidance. The toolkit contains helpful ideas, tips and providers
for each Gatsby Benchmark. Further information will be sent to Headteacher
this week regarding the CEC Implementation Plan. This information is

Secure a whole school non-timetabled themed day in the summer term for a well-planned,
organised and structures day of inspiring business speakers, career focused lessons, hands on
activities and university outreach activities
Be creative – do not do the same things you have always done – the world of work is changing
so much our careers programmes
Build your own networks – ask every member of staff to give you two emails of contacts of
people they know who would be inspirational for students
Link careers to as many opportunities as you can, e.g. world book day can be linked to careers
in the production of books (not just writers)
Make use of your tutorial programme to embed careers education
Collect student and staff voice to evaluate your careers provision
Hold whole staff CPD training on careers education as part of the school CPD programme. This
will also encourage departments to engage in careers in their subjects
Set up student Careers Ambassadors
Support from the school management team is vital

Careers Leaders – Understanding the role and what it

By September 2018, all schools should have a named
Careers Leader, who is responsible and accountable for the

WorldSkills UK – Career Planning Toolkit
World Skills UK have developed a free toolkit to help you develop your
students’ career planning and employability skills and prepare them for
career success. The lessons have been designed to be as easy to use
as possible and can fit flexibly into a range of circumstances. Minimal
preparation is needed for the 10 lessons and differentiation and

WorldSkills UK – Closing the gender gap
A report on gender differences with regards to careers and
careers preparation. Some interesting statistics include:
Mothers are the biggest source of careers advice (59%) –
Does your careers programme inform and engage parents?
56% of young women feel their career options are limited by
their gender. 37% of young men feel the same – How do you
challenge stereotypes in your careers programme?
Young people say they learn best through hands on
experience (31%) but only 18% said they received this type of advice. Hands on experiences
include visiting a workplace, talking to a current apprentice and visiting a university – How much
hands on experience does your career programme include?

St Thomas More – Apprenticeship Email Distribution List
Elsa Corr, Head of Sixth Form at St Thomas More High School, has set up
communication channel, via email, for any students that are thinking about
apprenticeships or are unsure of their post-18 progression path. The emails
have formed quite a talking point with many students, who are thinking about
University wanted to join the email to ensure they are informed about all the
different progression opportunities open to them.
James Bayley, a student at the school, said “The opportunities that have been sent to me through
school have allowed me to look into companies that I wouldn’t have usually found by myself, I have
found it very resourceful and interesting.”

Anglia Ruskin University offer a range of Subject Tasters both on and
off campus. Places fill up faster but this is an excellent opportunity
for students and a great way to help towards meeting Gatsby
