Bulletin Announcement Deadline Information deadline for consideration of church bulletin

announcements is Monday, by 12 Noon at the latest to be

parish office after this designated time will be included in the

WHEN WINCHESTER SCHOOLS ARE

CANCELLED DUE TO BAD WEATHER, SO

IS DAILY MASS!

With inclement weather there is concern for the

safety of parishioners and our ability to clear the

sidewalks to make them safe and free of snow and

ice. When conditions are extreme and the

Winchester Schools cancel classes, we will cancel

the celebration of Weekday Mass and Religious

Education classes. Also, when there are extreme

conditions or roads are unsafe, we will post

cancellations of parish events on our website and

on our Facebook page. *If you have a Mass

scheduled on a day when Daily Mass is cancelled

due to bad weather, the office would be happy to

reschedule it for you.

It’s Cold and Flu Season!

During cold and flu season, we would like to

remind parishioners that there is no requirement

for a handshake at the “neighbor greeting” at the

beginning of Mass or at the sign of peace. You

may turn toward your neighbors and offer a verbal

greeting without shaking hands. We are also

temporarily suspending Communion from the cup.

Please heed the advice of health professionals to

protect yourself and others from the spread of

colds and the flu.

St. Mary Parish 5th Sunday in Ordinary Time February 4, 2018

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Gospel recounts “a day in the life” of Jesus. We are told he visited the home of Peter, where Jesus cured Peter’s mother-in-law. While there, word spread of his presence and so the whole town came to the door bringing those who were sick with various diseases, as well as those possessed with demons—all to be cured. Jesus never turned away those who were in need of healing. In your busy life, is there someone Jesus has put in your path that needs a listening ear, a healing touch, a caring smile? Be the face of Jesus to that person today, this week.

Our Lady of Lourdes

Novena Novena Dates: February 2-10

Feast Day: February 11

O Ever Immaculate Virgin,

Mother of Mercy, Health of

the Sick, Refuge of Sinners,

Comfort to the Afflicted, you

know my wants, my troubles,

my sufferings. Deign to cast

upon me a look of mercy. By

appearing in the Grotto of

Lourdes, you were pleased to

make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense

your favors; and already many sufferers have obtained

the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal.

I come therefore, with the most unbounded confidence

to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving

Mother, the granting of my requests. Through gratitude

for favors, I will endeavor to imitate your virtues, that I

may one day share your glory. Our Lady of Lourdes,

pray for us. Amen. (Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be.)

Dear Parishioners,

Ash Wednesday this year also

happens to be St. Valentine’s Day.

Most of us associate Valentine’s Day

with hearts, flowers, chocolates,

cards and for some a date night. We

express our love for others in many

differing ways and sometimes miss the mark even though

our intentions are sincere. Saint John in his Gospel tells

us that God is Love, and they who abide in love abide in

God, and God abides in them.

Christ Jesus born in the stable in Bethlehem and

placed in the wooden manger on Christmas Day is now

journeying up to Jerusalem to give His life on the wood

of the cross for our Redemption/Salvation. Out of pure

love for all, he gives His life as a sacrificial offering for

all humanity. Out of true love, he reveals the Father’s

will, and in obedience does the will of His and Our

Father in Heaven. No chocolates, no flowers, no other

heart of love except His Sacred Heart for all is His gift to

all.

On Ash Wednesday we as individuals and as a

church begin our Lenten journey of roughly Forty Days

and Forty Nights. We are marked with ashes of burnt

palm on our foreheads with words encouraging us to be

repentant or to remember our mortality. Our fasting, our

abstaining from meats on Fridays, our extra spiritual

practices, our Parish Mission, receiving the Sacrament of

Reconciliation, our charity and other good works have as

a goal/intention to assist us on this Lenten journey to

Easter and the renewal of our Baptismal promises at the

Easter Vigil or Sunday Masses. The renewal of

Baptismal promises brings us Divine Graces/Blessings to

celebrate Easter Joy.

Our Ash Wednesday schedule offers parishioners

various times to participate at Mass or in the afternoon

with a simple Service of Word & Ashes at 4 p.m. after

school is out. On Wednesday evenings during Lent once

again throughout the Archdiocese, all churches will be

offering the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) as

well as their regular scheduled times. At Saint Mary a

priest will be available in our Reconciliation Room from

6:00–7:30p.m. every Wednesday (except Ash

Wednesday).

May this Lent be a Blessing for our parish and

parishioners as we welcome our new Administrator and

prepare to celebrate Easter Joy.

Blessings always,

Fr. Michael

Pray with the Pivotal Players

of Our Faith this Lent

Bishop Robert Barron’s CATHOLICISM series, an epic

ten-part documentary, took people around the world and

deep into the Catholic faith. The series aired on PBS and

has been seen by millions. But there is still more of the

story to tell. Bishop Barron is on a new journey to

unlock the truth behind the Catholic Church’s most

influential people. CATHOLICISM: The Pivotal

Players is a multi-part film series that illuminates a

handful of saints, artists, mystics and scholars who not

only shaped the life of the Church but changed the

course of civilization.

This Lent we will get to know the convert, Blessed John

Henry Newman; learn more about the evangelization of

GK Chesterton; and study artist Michelangelo’s great

influence on our Catholic faith.

If you are unable to attend any of our dates, St. Patrick’s

in Stoneham is offering Pivotal Players on Thursdays

Upcoming Snow and Fuel

Collection

A snow and fuel collection will be taken up on the weekend

of February 10/11 to help pay the oil and gas bills and to

defray the cost of snow removal. In total we have incurred

bills in the neighborhood of $ 32,000 as of the end of

January. Our aging buildings are often not energy efficient,

and they use more energy than we’d like. The snow and

fuel collection helps to pay thousands of dollars that we

spend a year to heat our buildings and to clear the snow

from our property to give safe, easy access to all.

Queen of Katwe (PG) - Living in the slum of Katwe in

Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10 year old

Phiona and her family. Her world changes one day

when she meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo), a

missionary who teaches children how to play chess.

Phiona becomes fascinated with the game and soon

becomes a top player under Katende’s guidance. Her

success in local competitions and tournaments opens the

door to a bright future and a golden chance to escape

from a life of poverty.

Masses for Prayer and Penance Sunday, February 4

All Masses on Sunday, February 4 will be offered for Prayer

and Penance at the request of Cardinal Sean. The Mass is

being held in response to a call from Pope Francis for all

episcopal conferences across the world to have a Day of Prayer

and Penance in recognition of harm done by clergy sexual

abuse within the church.

OUR COMMUNITY

Today’s Reflection

Today we continue hearing about the first days Jesus spent with his disciples, healing those who are ill or possessed by demons. When he cures Simon Peter’s mother-in-law, she immediately rises and serves her guests. She may not realize it, but she is providing an example to her son-in-law and his companions. She is showing what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. The call to be Jesus’ disciple is the call to serve.

DivorceCare

DivorceCare is a 13-week program of healing and

support for those who have experienced divorce. The

current series began on Monday, January 22. The

group meets on Mondays from 7:00-8:30pm in St.

Eulalia’s McGann Conference Room at 50 Ridge Street,

Winchester.

Each week there is a video presentation on the

challenges that divorced people face, followed by

discussion and prayer. The workbook and materials

cost $15. If you would like to participate, please call

Marge McGlone at 617/633-8967 to register.
