It’s been a big two weeks at Nowra High School.
Josh Neri has been selected to represent the Illawarra and South East Region in the Junior State Debating Championship to be held at Sydney University on 25-27 November. Congratulations to Josh on this outstanding achievement, and best wishes for next week.
Rose Vucic, one of our wonderful school captains, has won the Victor Chang Award for Science. This award is a well-deserved acknowledgment of Rose’s excellent performance in Biology and Chemistry. I am looking forward to seeing Rose receive her award at the University of Wollongong Innovation Centre on 10 December. Congratulations Rose – we’re all very proud of you!
The Year 12 formal was a great evening, with our students looking very glamorous. The staff scrubbed up pretty well too! It was lovely that so many parents were able to attend the evening. It made it a very special night.
Now that we have farewelled Year 12 it’s time to start planning for next year. On Tuesday we hosted Year 6 Orientation Day, and we were joined by students from across the Shoalhaven who will be in Year 7 at Nowra High School in 2014. It was a fantastic day, with the students welcomed by their Year Adviser Mr Morgan, and groups led by our Year 9 Peer Support leaders who gave students a tour of the school, our library and farm. The Peer Support leaders also ran activities to help the Year 6 students start making new friends for next year. Thank you to our Peer Support team for being great school leaders. Thank you also to Ms McAlister, Mr Morgan and Mrs Newton for their organisation of the day, and Mr Lenard for the delicious BBQ lunch.
Early in the year our Student Representative Council started the process of introducing a dress to the Nowra High School uniform selection. This is a long process involving consultation with the P&C, students and our uniform supplier, Daylight. The students have done a great job, and this week the dress arrived in the uniform shop. It is already very popular with some sizes selling out on the first day, and the girls look smart in the new dress. Congratulations to the SRC – this was a great initiative, and I appreciate and admire your creativity and motivation in advocating for the students of Nowra High.
Have a great week

P & C REPORT
The School Canteen is operated by the P&C and we are in need of volunteers. Your commitment can be as little as a few hours once a term or on a regular weekly basis. If any parents or caregivers are able to assist please contact the Canteen on 44213435. As with most work places we can structure your volunteering hours to best suit you. As a volunteer in the Canteen, you would be making a very valuable contribution to the Nowra High School community.
The Nowra High P&C has, in 2013, donated just under $43000 to various school projects. These funds come from the operation of the Canteen. Therefore, if you are able to volunteer in the Canteen we pay less in wages which means increased profit so ultimately more money can be put back into our wonderful school.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER HOST FAMILY – IT’S FUN!
World Education Program (WEP) is inviting you to experience another culture in your own home by becoming a volunteer host family to an international student arriving in January 2014. Students from Switzerland, Finland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Italy, Japan and Thailand are looking forward to experiencing life in Australia, making new friends and becoming a member of an Australian family.
"Another excellent experience for the family. We learned a lot about Italy. Virginia was very helpful and cooperative at home. It is a wonderful thing to give people new experiences. Virginia had never eaten mango, been to ten pin bowling or held a crocodile or koala. This is the part I enjoy most about the exchange; experience. Virginia will never forget Australia."
- Susan and Anthony, host parents of Virginia (Italy)
It’s easier than you think and a fantastic experience for all!

From The Deputies: Coming on to School Grounds to Park? A Reminder
All persons who park their vehicles on school premises do so at their own risk. This applies to staff, students, parents and members of the public. Nowra High School has a number of mature, but healthy trees that may drop branches in high wind and especially after rain. Persons who park their cars on school grounds should park in designated parking areas and away from trees where possible. Senior students are required to park at the lower end of the basketball courts, outside the school gates. This area has relatively few trees and, therefore, reduces the risk of damage from falling limbs. Recently, concern has been expressed about the unsafe way that some senior students drive when leaving the school. Safety is a major concern in this congested area at what is a peak traffic time for the community. Seniors are asked to be responsible and safe road users every time they drive.
