Plus each member is asked to contribute his or her efforts in some way, depending on individual interests and availability. Annual Meeting and Election Is Coming October 25 is the annual meeting and Board election for Chicago Duplicate Bridge. Board members whose current terms are expiring include Judy Adler, Merilee Elliott, Matthew Dyer, Barry Little, and Francie Margolin. Those with one more year on their current term include Guy Franklin, Rosede Olson, David Schroeder, and Brad Stout. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please contact Dave Schroeder, election chair, at [email protected]. Board terms are 2 years.

Homemade Cookies and Developing Bridge Players: What a Combo!

October 3 is the next Mentor/Advanced Mentee game at Chicago Duplicate Bridge. Held at 6:30 the first Tuesday evening of every month, these games are designed to provide our I/N players with some individualized feedback on their bidding and play. They are “regular” games and award Masterpoints with appropriate stratification. Mentees who are interested in participating should send email to Dave Schroeder at [email protected] and come with a completed convention card. Another benefit—treats provided by Dave, baker extraordinaire! This month the date is also National Homemade Cookie Day. We encourage players to make and bring their favorite cookies—like an early holiday cookie exchange if they don’t all get eaten!

Cell phones have been an increasing annoyance for our players. Directors have been asked to penalize players whose phones disrupt the game, in particular those who are repeat offenders. If you must use your phone, please leave the room. If you are expecting an important call, please find out how to turn your phone to vibrate, and leave the room to take the call. If possible, alert the Director in advance that you are expecting a call.

There has also been an increase in "odor" complaints, in both directions. Odiferous players are a problem in the confined space of a bridge club, and regular bathing and laundry are encouraged, to say the least. Your overuse of perfume and scent is overwhelming for some of our players, and an actual allergen for a small number. Ideally, forego the perfume completely; we’re all sweet enough without it.

Parking Rate Increase Beginning August 1, the cost of parking in the lot to the north of our building increased. The

lot’s owners, EZ Parking, raised the costs to us, including the monthly rent paid by the club, to

reflect their own increased costs. The club will continue to subsidize the parking fee for

players. The fee for the first 10 spots, paid directly to the game Director, is now $6.00. The fee

for subsequent parkers is $8.50. Parking is free on Sundays and evenings. It is imperative that

all players display their CDB parking permits or decals every time they park, including on

Sundays and evenings. “Outsiders” sometimes claim to be bridge players to escape paying

parking fees, and the lot’s staff are cracking down on offenders.

Beverages for SALE at CDB

The beverage cooler stocked with water, pop, and LaCroix has proved to be a big hit and a

huge improvement over the previous vending machine. However, some of our players fail to

pay for their beverage of choice. We know which of our players regularly fail to pay. Please do

the right thing and put your $1 in the jar EVERY time.

Beginner, Intermediate/Novice News Beginners are welcome at Chicago Duplicate Bridge. We offer at least 4 games every week for players with limited Masterpoints, as well as separate games at special events if attendance warrants. All games are stratified and provide Masterpoints. High school students can play for $1.00. Supervised play consists of play of several hands with advice and commentary available; a short lesson is often included. And we have lessons at several levels; see below. ❖ Supervised Play

useful convention in this situation. Responder bids 3 to find a 4-card minor holding in opener’s hand. Using this convention, responder shows both minor suits with at least 5-4 distribution and sufficient strength to invite slam, 10+ points.

In response to 3 (MSS), opener bids any 4+ card minor at the 4 level, starting a slam sequence by bidding controls or RKCB. Without a 4-card minor, opener bids 3NT. Responder can pass 3NT with a minimal hand. With additional HCP or more shape, responder continues by bidding the longer minor at the 4 level. Here are 2 hands where responder would use MSS:

Player Rank Advancement

Congratulations to the following members who have advanced in ACBL rank in July, as noted

on September 6.

Eileen Pembroke, Junior Master; Ilan Wolff, Advanced NABC Master; Daiva Vitukynaite, Bronze Life Master; Joseph Tomlinson, Ruby Life Master; Cherrolyn Woolwine, Sapphire Life Master.

Congratulations to these players for success away from the Club!

CDB was exceptionally well represented at the North American Pairs competition in

Milwaukee on Saturday, September 14. Each pair will represent District 13 at the Spring NABC

in Columbus next year. The North American Pairs is a prestigious national level event with

three pairs from each district competing. A flight was won by George Jacobs and Claude Vogel.

B flight was won convincingly by Kevin Choi and Cory Perkers. And C flight was won by

Cindy Polayes and Carolyn Turek. As a result of their success, they are both now life masters.

See additional results below.
