Volume 23 Number 10 October 2014

The Greater Muscatine Chamber of Commerce & Industry is a catalyst for advancing our region’s economy, improving our quality of life and enhancing our members’ success

Americans will, once again, have the opportunity to have a say in how they are governed. November 4, 2014 is Election Day, and we encourage everyone to exercise your right to vote.

This orderly, though sometimes messy, opportunity to fulfill one’s civic duty is important for us all.

There are many candidates working hard to gain your support and we encourage you to get to know them. An excellent opportunity to gain a better understanding of who the candidates are is to attend or watch the League of Women Voter’s Candidate Forums. There will be two forums this year. The first will be held October 14 at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. This forum will be for the House of Representative Candidates. The second Candidate Forum will be held October 28 at 7 p.m. also in the City Council Chambers, and will be conducted for candidates to fill Muscatine County Board of Supervisors, Muscatine County Treasurer, and Muscatine County Recorder positions. These events can be viewed live on the Government Access channel (Channel 2) and will be replayed at various times.

The process by which you can vote has gotten more convenient over time. More voting locations, early voting, and absentee ballots are now prevalent. Leslie A. Soule, Commissioner of Elections of

Robbin Block has been evangelizing the benefits of marketing strategy for over 25 years. Part geek, part creative, she’s brought her in-depth knowledge of the Web and its strategic application to business to companies of all sizes and to thousands of readers via her book, Social Persuasion: Making Sense of Social Media for Small Business. This month, Robbin discusses some of social media’s many implications on the crafting and execution of winning small business marketing plans.

What’s the biggest misperception about social media’s role in marketing, and what should entrepreneurs really be doing as they map out a new small business?

Social media can’t solve all your marketing problems. For a business, it needs to be thought of like any other communication tool. You need to understand the fundamentals of marketing — who’s your target audience, where do they get their information, what do they care about, etc.— to find the right media mix that makes sense for you.

What is the most underutilized non-social media marketing method today?

By far, it’s public relations. Many people are afraid of it, or don’t know what it is. Instead they’ll spend money on poorly placed ads that will almost always fail.

What are two or three go-to resources for finding data about your market?

The U.S. Census. A lot of valuable information from the latest census is now being released. Industry associations. Industry trade publications and consumer magazines. Their media kits have great

information about their readers’ demographics and interests.

And many more resources are available at my website, www.blockbeta.com.

Coupons are gaining popularity as a means for luring potential customers. If this option appears right for a small business, what is needed to help turn coupon users into regular customers?

Understand what attracted them in the first place. People who just want a deal are tough to convert. But many customers use coupons to “sample the goods.” To get them to come back and pay full price, use strategic messaging at each touchpoint to help push them down the purchase path. This messaging can be done verbally, through printed materials, online, and even reinforced with “gifts”.

Can you provide an example of how this works?

A Pilates studio I work with has used social coupons to bring in new customers, offering a 7-week program at a discounted rate. Each week, the studio reinforces the benefits of membership and the results the customer would get if they continue taking their classes. Communications include a comprehensive orientation, an introductory gift of a branded water bottle, follow-on emails, etc. It’s a planned program designed to positively reinforce the customer experience. This in combination with excellent service may be enough to convince the customer to continue at full price.

Why should entrepreneurs work with a SCORE small business mentor to develop and monitor their marketing plans?

Marketing needs to be flexible, because the environment within which a business operates is always changing. And the business itself is evolving as new opportunities or threats come to light. A SCORE mentor can help filter the information and focus the entrepreneur on what’s important.

One sure notices the changes in temperature and moisture that takes place in September (as I am writing this) and in

October when this is published.

I follow SCORE on LinkedIn and on Facebook in addition to the emails I receive about a number of topics.

A recent email I thought I would share with you:

“SCORE, on September 11th, was offering a free webinar. The webinar,

a seminar on your computer, phone, laptop or any other device was FREE. Yes, free.

The title of the webinar was: The 10 most effective, least expensive Marketing Strategies.”

Couple of items struck me as worthy of sharing with you: 1. Free, 2. Was sponsored through SCORE, 3. Helped increase sales, and 4. Was Free

Score Mentors are here to help you build your business and to increase sales. In this webinar, sponsored through SCORE, one can see if some

of the 10 marketing strategies applies to your business.

The key here is to check the SCORE website often. Do make it a point to add www.score.org to your favorites bar. Who knows what free webinar will be next.

More than 75 years ago, Farm Bureau was founded to meet the insurance needs of America’s farmers, and today, you can still find Farm Bureau agents who provide insurance to those who need to protect what matters most. Farm Bureau now provides a wide variety of insurance, from liability insurance, to health insurance, to home owner’s insurance, and financial services such as retirement and estate planning.

Who They AreThe story of one of Muscatine’s Farm Bureau agencies begins in November 2004 when Steve Bermel became a Farm Bureau agent. In April 2007, Bermel opened the doors of his Farm Bureau office at its current location of 900 Park Avenue, in an old church.

Currently, his staff of three are always available to assist clients with their insurance needs. Lorie Hohneke has been with Bermel’s Farm Bureau office for 6 years and specializes in health insurance. Rhonda Ayers started in 2010 and is licensed in home, auto, commercial and health insurance. Robin White also started with Farm Bureau in 2010 and coordinates all appointments and assists customers when needed.

When customers walk into Farm Bureau, they expect to have all of their insurance needs attended to in one office. Agent Steve Bermel and his business associates are there to do just that.

Farm Bureau Financial Service, the Community, and GMCCITo utilize what Farm Bureau Financial Services offers, clients must become members of Farm Bureau Federation. Most of what the Farm Bureau Federation collects goes right back into the community. Along with the member benefits that they offer, the Federation supports many agricultural issues on a local, state, and national level. The Federation is a big supporter of area youth and the local communities who are dependent on agriculture.

The Farm Bureau Financial Services agency of Steve Bermel feels that it is important to be a GMCCI member because of the benefits that GMCCI membership can bring to the community such as networking between members and member referrals.

If you are in the market for home, auto, commercial, health, long term care, life, or financial services, be sure to stop by Agent Steve Bermel’s office at 900 Park Avenue in Muscatine and see what Farm Bureau Financial Services can offer you.

United Way of Muscatine Turns 60 This YearBy: Kim Warren, Resource Development Manager, United Way of MuscatineUnited Way of Muscatine is celebrating their 60th anniversary this year. Leading their campaign this year are Susan and Aaron Eversmeyer. Aaron is a Muscatine native and Susan is proud to now call Muscatine home. They have volunteered with United Way for years. Susan has served on committees such as Community Investment and Day of Caring, and recently joined the Board. She is very passionate about the volunteer work she does through the Food Rescue Program.

History of United WayIn 1954 the Muscatine Community Campaign was faltering, and a group of concerned citizens organized to run a supplemental campaign. During its early years of operation the United Way of Muscatine was called the United Fund and executive staffing services and facilities were shared with the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce. The first Board President was Robert Toborg.

The charter agencies receiving funds from the United Fund Campaign were: Muscatine Welfare Association Boy Scouts of Muscatine Girl Scouts of Muscatine YMCA YWCA Public Health Nursing Association The Salvation Army Emergency & Rescue Red Cross Cancer Society

In September of 1964 the United Fund became an independent organization and Mary Harvey served as the Executive Secretary for the United Fund. In January of 1968 the United Fund was renamed to United Community Services. The first $100,000 campaign was under the campaign leadership of Arthur Stanley in 1962. United Way of Muscatine was adopted as the new name in 1979 so that the organization would be more closely identified with the United Way of America. The first half million dollar campaign was reached in 1982 when $511,000 was raised by Dick Marr.

In 1990 the United Way of Muscatine, in partnership with the Muscatine Health Support Foundation and Muscatine County, sponsored a comprehensive Needs Assessment. Paul Brooks, chairman of the United Way Planning Committee, chaired the 33-member task force. FOCUS on Muscatine County, a report and a plan of action, was completed in June of 1991. The outstanding work of

the Needs Assessment Committee earned the United Way of Muscatine one of only three United Way of America Gold Second Century Awards given in 1992.

In 1998 Campaign Chairman Dennis McDonald formed the Pearl City Leadership Society that recognizes individuals giving $1,000 or more. Key to the success of the leadership-giving program was the matching gift program established by Stanley M. Howe for the 1998 and 1999 Campaigns. The 1999 Campaign Chairman Robert Sheets broke the “Million Dollar Mark” by successfully raising $1,010,207.

The first annual Day of Caring was held in the fall of 2007, with 284 people participating in volunteer projects throughout our community. In the fall of 2012, Day of Caring grew so large the event had to be split into two days, a fall event for adults and a spring event for students. The fall 2013/spring 2014 Day of Caring events had a record 1014 volunteers.

The Kids First Fund was started in 2008 by Diane Campbell, Mike Hagerty and Mike Johannsen to help children succeed in the classroom. In 2009 United Way of Muscatine began offering internal programming through LINCS (Local Information in Connection to Services) and Volunteer Solutions. In June of 2013 Shane Orr was promoted to Chief Professional Officer.

United Way TodayThe grant allocations process has evolved over time and is now known as Community Investment. Volunteer teams review grant proposals focused on the areas of education, financial stability and health. The great work done by these funded programs is impressive. The 2014 funded programs are:

The results of the Community Needs Assessment will help them focus their strategic planning around the needs of the community. As they shift their focus to a more collaborative impact approach, they will help to ensure that the community’s resources are being used as effectively and efficiently as possible.

“As we celebrate 60 years, I’m proud of all of the great work that has been done in the community through the programs that we have funded over the years as well as the wonderful relationships and collaborations that have formed over that time. Clear Skies for Golfers at the 50th Annual Harold Ogilvie Musca-Fu-Da Golf Outing

Despite a forecast of heavy rain, golfers made their way to Muscatine Municipal Golf Course on Tuesday, September 9 for the 50th Annual Musca-Fu-Da Golf Outing. When tee time arrived, the sun was shining and the weather was beautiful, making for a successful round of golf.

The afternoon was filled with Grab-N-Go lunch generously donated by Bickford Senior Living, 18 holes of golf, hole sponsors, hole contests, course gifts, registration gifts, raffles, and a Callaway Golf shopping spree for all attendees. After 18 holes, the golfers were greeted in the clubhouse with a 19th Hole Reception hosted by YPN Muscatine.

When the rain came at dinner, guests were kept dry under a tent on the driving range. Dinner this year was a selection of heavy hors d’oeuvres that allowed attendees to socialize and talk about their golf game. The highlight of the evening reception was Harold “Nick” Ogilvie, Jr., who was in attendance to tell stories about his dad Harold Ogilvie, the Muscatine business man who lent his name to the golf outing.

An event like Musca-Fu-Da could not have been possible if it weren’t for the support of our sponsors. Eagle Sponsors this year included: Bridgestone Commercial Solutions, Central State Bank, The HON Company, Monsanto, Muscatine Journal, SSAB, and UnityPoint Health- Trinity Muscatine. Birdie Sponsors included: Eastern Iowa Light & Power Coop, First National Bank, Frye Builders, Kent Corporation, Muscatine Power and Water, and US Bank. Par Sponsors this year were: Hy-Vee, and Integrated Technology Partners/WTC Communications.
