FROM THE PRINCIPALSchool Attendance

The colder mornings are certainly upon us and it really is that much harder to get out of a warm bed. With this in mind, I remind parents that regular attendance at school is very important. Going to school every day and getting there on time reinforces for children, that school is a significant experience. I cannot stress enough the value of arriving to school on time. Most classroom teachers set out the day’s routine, prayer, news, notes for the office, learning intentions and work expectations for the day. Missing out on these routines sometimes means that when a child arrives late, they are playing catch up for the remainder of the morning and are unsettled and unsure. If this happens regularly children can become anxious or even casual in their approach. Hang in there as the warmer months are just around the corner. Catholic Identity: Parish Renewal Initiative

In 2017 Jill Gallio from the Office for Renewing Parishes joined one of our school board meetings to talk to teachers about the Parish Renewal Initiative, an initiative of the

Adelaide archdiocese which commenced in 2016. The purpose of Jill’s visit was to engage with our school community to foster a deeper awareness and dialogue around the

renewal initiative. The initiative is based around the Renewing Parishes document which outlines eight Gospel characteristics of a healthy, vibrant and renewing parish. In this

instance, the word parish is used in its fullest sense, inclusive of schools, pastoral councils and other catholic communities. Below is a breakdown of the first two Gospel

characteristics.

1. The parish (including its schools) is a community in which each member is called to a personal relationship with Jesus. The parish is directed towards discipleship, and understands itself as a community of disciples, and as a school of discipleship. Our parishes, schools and communities will need to be places where members can learn to pray, to know and understand the Scriptures, and our Catholic tradition. They are places where we learn to reflect and to use our gifts to create a better world for all to live in. 2. Eucharistic liturgies are prayerful and fully participative. As parish communities we need to give priority to preparing well for each of our liturgical celebrations. Good music is important. Many people are drawn to liturgies where there is inspiring music, times of silent prayer, as well as good preaching. If priests are to give themselves fully to prayerful leadership of the Eucharist it may be necessary to limit rather than simply add on more Masses for our priests.

Parent Mathematics Workshop – Monday 27 August and Friday September 7

Just a reminder that Antonio Catholic School will be holding a Parent Mathematics Workshop on Monday August 27 at 7:00pm. The workshop will be repeated on Friday

September 7 at 10:00am. The workshop aims to provide parents with an understanding of how children learn in the area of Mathematics, how Mathematics is taught in our

classrooms along with strategies to use at home to support children’s mathematical learning.

Parents in Education Week – Tuesday 28 August to Thursday 30 August

This year the South Australian Parents in Education Week will be celebrated from Tuesday 28 August to Thursday 30 August. This state-wide initiative acknowledges and

celebrates the importance of parents being engaged in children’s learning and education from birth and throughout their school years. This year the theme for the expert

sessions provided for parents is ‘Behaviours for learning: skills for life’. Each evening, speakers and panel guests will provide information and useful ideas for parents, caregivers

and educators of children from 0 to18 years.

Parents and school staff can attend the free live events at the Entertainment Centre. For more information and to Register go to www.education.sa.gov.au/pieweek

Safety in and around School Drop Off/Pick Up Points

A friendly reminder that for safety reasons, bollards are used along the Bains Road entrance to the school during school drop off and pick up times. Bollards will be in place

preventing entry into the Bains Road carpark from 8:30am-9:10am each morning and 2:30pm-3:25pm each afternoon. Alternative parking before and after school (along with

school access) is available along Stanley Street at the rear of the school or the basketball courts adjacent to Mary Help of Christians Church. As a school community we are

seeking your support in following the parking regulations in place outside of the school. Working in partnership with you to keep our children safe.

Parent/Teacher interviews – Weeks 1- 2

Parent-Teacher interviews were held for years Reception to 7 across Weeks 1-2 of Term 3 (July 25th-August 3rd). These interviews provided an opportunity for teachers to share the academic and social progress your child has made and to discuss areas of growth and future goal setting. It was also an opportunity for parents and carers to ask teachers questions related to their child’s development. If you were not able to attend our formal parent/teachers interviews or if there is something you would like to discuss with your child’s teacher, feel free to make a time to meet with them.

Whole School Mass – Wednesday August 15

On Wednesday August 15 we will be celebrating the Feast of the Assumption whole school mass in Mary Help of Christians Church at 9:15am. It would be great to have as many

families as possible join us as we continue to celebrate our Antonio school community.

Wishing all our families a safe and happy end to the week.

Shaun O’Leary.

Positive Psychology/Positive Education

As part of our staff professional learning we have been focusing on Positive Psychology. Positive Psychology was founded by Professor Martin Seligman and aims to encourage

and support individuals, schools and communities to flourish (‘feeling good and doing good’). It focuses on specific skills that assist individuals to strengthen their relationships,

build positive emotions, enhance personal resilience, promote mindfulness and encourage a healthy lifestyle.

Staff have been discovering their character strengths, a key area of research in Positive Psychology. They have been defined as positive traits reflected in thoughts, feelings and

behaviours.

Some of our staff’s strengths include love, kindness, humour, appreciation of beauty & excellence, persistence, creativity and fairness to name a few.

I wonder if you can spot the character strengths of our staff?

ART ROOM REQUEST Louise Akermann is needing newpaper for the Art Room. If you can help with this request, please bring them into the office. Thank you.

PLAYGROUP NEWS Our Mini Explorers enjoyed engaging their senses using their feet today. When children are given the opportunity to explore different textures and explore with their feet, they are discovering their environment in a different way. A sensory path was developed where they can use their feet to balance on slippery, slimy, crunchy surfaces then step through the different materials helps engage their gross motor skills and by squelching and squeezing the materials through their toes it helps refine fine motor skills. All of this is supported with the safety and comfort of their caregiver by their side, making them feel safe and secure to try new things.
