February 2020 Dear Parents It feels like Spring is on the way and for our Year 11 students we are entering the final stretch before exams. It is true for all students, but especially for the Year 11s trying to put revision schedules in place, that routine is key. Please do support and help them by ensuring they start the day well, get to school prepared and on time and then when they get home have a regular pattern for their study / revision. Please do talk to them at meal times about what they have been learning and offer to quiz or test on specific knowledge. It all adds up to make a big difference and your support is invaluable. You can read more about revision advice on our website here . Staffing Vacancies We still have a vacancy for an Achievement Support Assistant. Details of the post can be found on our website here: http://www.priestlands.hants.sch.uk/Support-Staff . We are also now advertising for teachers of Maths, Art & Photography, and History. Details of these posts can be found here http://www.priestlands.hants.sch.uk/Teaching-Staff Cycling to school We take the safety of all our students seriously and it is a great concern that some students are riding their bikes to school without a helmet and with minimal or no regard for the Highway Code. We have received several reports recently from members of the public of ‘near misses’. We will be contacting you if your child is one of these students and if their behaviour whilst cycling does not change they will be banned from bringing their bikes to school. Please would you help with enforcing these important rules and expectations for the safety of all? Grease Our school production of Grease will be during the week commencing 22 nd June and will be open to parents on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. Sponsorship packages will be available if you have a business or venture you would like to promote. A separate communication about this will be released after half term. Website We are looking to restructure our website in the summer term. We would welcome feedback from parents about the things you want to be able to see most often and get to quickly. There are several parents evenings coming up this term so please do come and share your thoughts with me. - 2 - Attendance A huge thank you to parents for making sure that your children miss as little school as possible. In recent days we have been doing assemblies reminding students about the importance of good attendance. It has been interesting to see the reaction of some when they discover that an attendance level of 90% at the end of the school year actually means that 19 school days have been missed; almost a month! Our aim is for every student to achieve at least 95%. Of course we understand that some students have ongoing medical issues which make attendance a challenge, some have medical (and other) emergencies which affect attendance, and we all get struck down by bugs from time to time. However, we have been reminding students about the well-established link between good attendance and good exam outcomes, and challenging them to be determined to make it to school unless they really are too ill to attend! Please see the attached poster for some advice from parents who have managed to keep attendance levels up at 95% or higher. If you are struggling to get your child to come into school please do let us know so that we can help. Safer internet day Tomorrow is safer internet day. The online world is developing rapidly and our young people are fast becoming digital citizens. Do you have suitable safeguarding in place at home? Other providers are available for home protection but we thought we would share this free offer.

To celebrate “Safer Internet Day 2020” FlashStart is making free access to its online filtering service. Now every UK household, registering during February, will be able to control the use of gaming sites, adult content, gambling and to protect against malware when using the home WiFi for 1 year. Follow the Free Internet Protection activation link: https://flashstart.com/saferinternetday

- 3 - Plastics Recycling At Priestlands we are proud to be a part of three national recycling schemes to help reduce single use plastics entering our general waste and the environment. We are privileged to have both the New Forest National Park and the coast on our doorstep and this is why is it especially important to us to help preserve the environment we live in and the sea and wildlife we share it with. Last summer we teamed up with Terracycle.com by collecting crisp, snack, cake, biscuit and cracker plastic packets. We sort and send these away to be recycled into items such as plastic furniture. Not only is this good for our environment, it also generates a small income for our school to reinvest in Eco projects too. The actual amount we’ve made so far this school year is £207.40! That’s not bad for over 100kg of rubbish (c.50,000 packets!) and the benefit of keeping single use plastics out of our environment. If you would like to help us, please send your empty, flat and unfolded packets into school – any brand and size - but only the items as described above please. Unfortunately we cannot accept any other packaging. In addition to this we can also recycle any old pens and highlighters. There are boxes located in all tutor rooms, as well as in Reception. We are extremely grateful to Tesco Lymington, Pennington Sports & Social Club and Lymington & Pennington Junior schools who are also collecting on our behalf. House News

We’ve welcomed some new additions to Priestlands this year, and we’re delighted with the way they have settled in. Simba the Avon Lion, Reggie the Hurst Dragon, Artemis the Forest Wolf and Stanley the Solent Shark have been enjoying keeping up with the House Championship and they have already started training for their race at Sports Day! There have been some fantastic House competitions run by departments across the school over recent months and all houses are putting up a great challenge to claim the House Cup from Forest. Mr Purdy, Mr Klein and the Forest staff and students are going to have to work very hard if they wish to maintain their title of House champions for another year. Hurst have made an incredible start coming 1st place in the Year 7 Numeracy Ninjas competition, the Year 9 China project, The young chef competition and the Inter-House Christmas quiz. They also produced the most shoeboxes for the amazing Year 8 ‘Love in a box’ shoebox appeal before Christmas and were the House with the best attendance in the Autumn term. Hurst’s efforts with charity fundraising has been incredible so far, with both Year 8 and Year 11 raising considerably more than the other houses in their Charities weeks – Well done Hurst!! Solent have also started a very strong challenge to reclaim the House cup. Solent Year 7s won the History project competition and the Year 10 and 11 Solent stars were the most represented in this year’s Shakespeare Schools production. The Year 7s won the Science quiz and the Year 8s led the flock in the Cross-Country competition. The Sharks won the first Inter-House sports week which took place in their PE lessons. Solent were also the most punctual House in the Autumn term. They have started as they mean to go on and it’s clear they mean business.

- 4 - Avon have a great history of winning Sports Day but traditionally haven’t done so well with House Points – however, that has all changed now! Avon are flying high at the top of the leader board for House Points this year, an incredible turnaround! They also came 1st place in the European Bake off, the Autumn 2 Numeracy Ninja competition, the Year 8 History project and the November inter-house quiz. They certainly seem to be getting involved for ‘The Pride of Avon.’ Forest know they have a tough job to retain the House Cup this year, but they are confident they can do it. The Year 7s came joint first in the Numeracy Ninjas in Autumn 2. Mr Purdy must have been giving them some extra Science lessons as both the Year 8 and 9 Forest students came first in the Science quizzes. They’ve clearly been practising their running as well (or are they running scared?) as the Year 7s and 9s won the Inter-House Cross Country. Currently sitting in 2nd place for House points, they are trying to cling on to their Champions title. One of the best Inter-House competitions of the year took place last week, with the whole of Year 7 and 8 taking part in the swimming gala. There were some incredible swimmers and some amazing individual and team performances. The support from poolside was brilliant. The final results were: Year 7 - 4th – Avon – 134, 3rd – Forest – 135, 2nd Hurst – 146, 1st Solent – 166 Year 8 - 4th – Solent – 117, 3rd – Hurst – 126, 2nd – Forest – 138, 1st – Avon – 151 Well done to all students who have participated and got involved in the House competitions so far this year. There are plenty more competitions to come and thousands more House Points to be awarded – but who will they go to? May the best house win! Hampshire Music Service Opportunity Hampshire Music Service have asked us to inform you about an exciting opportunity coming up in August 2020. Following a hugely successful pilot run last year, they will be offering a week-long musical theatre course under the ‘Get Musical!’ brand. Get Musical! Theatre Week 2020 17-21 August 2020, 10am-4pm (Friday evening show) Wildern School, Hedge End £125 (early bird rate), £150 (full price) This year, the production has a circus theme, in a cabaret set up, with numbers from The Greatest Showman, Pippin, Chicago and more. A circus skills specialist will also be present for the week to incorporate real circus skills into the performance! This is a fantastic opportunity to work with musical theatre experts and gain performance experience, as well as being great fun! This course is open to all levels of experience and ability, adapted to suit the participants they get. However, they will also be working with a former West End choreographer so they are particularly looking for keen dancers as well as those interested in general musical theatre. Further information can be found on the web page: https://www.hants.gov.uk/educationandlearning/hampshiremusic/news/get-musical-2020-theatreweek.

EVERY DAY COUNTS High attendance to school is vital

Making it happen is not always easy

Here are some strategies that parents say work well:

Always talk about the importance of

school, even if your own experience is not always positive

High expectations – ‘like a military

operation’ every morning; they know

what to expect!

HOUSE RULE; Not attending

school is extremely unusual

Talk about the importance of sleep,

have sensible bedtimes, especially in

the days before the start of a new term

Arrange medical/dental appointments during holidays or early/late in the school day; a whole

day off is usually unnecessary

Always be up before them,

seeing them off to school if

possible

PARENT APPS

SIMS PARENT

SIMS Parent provides a window into the live data in our Schools Information Management System (SIMS). Student details, attendance, behaviour, timetables, calendar and school reports.

SIMS Parent is a website, and an App. The website is on www.sims-parent.co.uk and the App for your phone/tablet is available from the Google Play or Apple App store - search for SIMS Parent. You will need a pre-existing Facebook, Microsoft (Hotmail, Live, Outlook etc), Google, or Twitter account to access this product. We are currently using this to adopt a paperless approach to data collection that also complies with new GDPR regulations and Ofsted standards in respect of parental engagement. In the long term, we are hoping to move everything to this one parental engagement solution including Email, text and instant messages, homework, extra curricular activities, attendance, behaviour, timetables, assessment, calendar and school reports.

GROUPCALL XPRESSIONS

This App, available on Apple and Android, is currently our communication tool to parents. The App is available from Google Play or Apple App Store by searching for 'groupcall xpressions' The information is also available via a website portal: http://xpressions.groupcall.com We send SMS texts via Groupcall Messenger when it is urgent and important but the Xpressions App allows us to push messages to you free of charge allowing us to give you more information

of a less urgent nature. You can also view a student’s Timetable, Attendance, Achievement and Behaviour as well as the School Calendar.

SHOW MY HOMEWORK

All school homework is published via Show My Homework. It is accessible via a website and an App. Find the app in Google Play or Apple App Store by searching for 'Show My Homework' or online http://priestlands.showmyhomework.co.uk/

Tucasi SCOpay

This online payment system allows you to make payments to Priestlands using the Internet. This is also available as an app from Google Play or Apple App Store or online http://www.scopay.com/priestlands

For access you will need a unique ‘online link code’ for your child, available from our Finance Department. There is no minimum transaction amount for trips and activities, although there is a minimum transaction amount of £10 per child for dinner money. In addition, there are no transaction charges. We would encourage all parents to register on-line even if you will not be using it to make on-line payments. The benefit of this is that you can receive alerts to advise you that your child’s dinner money balance is running low and you are also able to view all catering purchases your child has made.
