A.700/83/2 Owing to the proximity of the enemy who occasionally shell Caen, celebration of Bastille Day was a quiet affair in Caen. The proccssion started in the Square approx. 5»30 p.m. opposite St. Ettiene, evacuation proceedings being temporarily held up. This procession consisted mainly of firemen, French soldiers and loading members of the French resistance movement, including Capt. Gilles its leader in the Calvados. Mr. Bernard Dastior, Minister of the Interior, was present. The procession marched as far as the Prefecture where it waited for the small detachment which wont to the War Memorial to lay a wreath there. This War Memorial being under enemy fire from positions 200 - 300 yards away,, I went with them but I could not covor the action very well as the enemy were actually firing on us. It was a case of crawling to the memorial, a distance of some 720 yards and getting inside the barrier, laying the wreath and getting away quickly; after the small detachment had returned to the Prefecture the whole party marched back to the Square nr. A.700/83/5 This attack vvas the first phase of a larger operation to expand the bridgehead in the direction of Meyers. The attack began at first light after an artillery barrage of 700 guns, and the village was taken by about 0900 hours.
