It’s a good idea to have multiple browsers. Windows come with IE, and Macs come withSafari, but downloading and installing Chrome and Firefox is a really good idea? Why?Because some programs are only supported in certain browsers, and as we will see, thebrowsers all have different strengths and weaknesses.

Internet Explorer is the default web browser for Windows computers and tablets.You cannot run it on a Mac.The most up-to-date version depends on which Windows operating system you'reusing:If you're using Windows 7 or 8.1, the most recent version you can use is IE 11.If you're using Vista, the newest version for your computer is IE 9.If you're using Windows XP, the most recent version of Internet Explorer you canuse is IE 8.PROSIE 11 is faster and more standards-compliant than ever, but there’s no syncing, ahandy feature Chrome has. And the up-to-date version only installs on Windows 7and 8.1. This is not the Internet Explorer of five years ago, but is still clunkycompared to Chrome. It also seems to be the most vulnerable to cybersecurityattacks.

Google Chrome is a browser developed by Google. In 2010, Chrome surpassed Firefox Interms of being the go-to browser for power users. It’s widely considered to be the best

browser, although that may have recently changed with Firefox’s update. Fast. Voicesearch. Leading support for HTML 5. Good security. Syncing. Built-in Flash playerand PDF reader. No longer the fastest browser on several benchmarks. Occasionalminor site incompatibilities.As of January 2015, StatCounter estimates that Google Chrome has a 51%worldwide usage share of web browsers, indicating that it is the most widely usedweb browser in the world.

The newest versions of all the browsers discussed today are set to automatically update bydefault, but if for some reason you haven’t updated, I strongly encourage you to do so. Ifyou are using an older version of Windows, newer versions of Internet Explorer cannot berun on your machine. Old versions are unstable, slow, and more likely to crash than thelatest version. They’re also more susceptible to malware and viruses. They may not be ableto display new websites. On top of those concerns, browser developers (Microsoft, Mozilla,Google, and Apple) are all in competition with one another meaning they are makingconstant improvements to out do each other. Until last fall, I would have said to you thatyou should mostly be using Chrome to do most of your surfing on the web, as that hadbeen true for years. Now, however, Internet Explorer has grown up a lot in the past tenyears, and the latest version of Firefox is getting first place in many reviews. If you neverupdate your browsers, you’re missing out on the innovations these browsers are bringingto the table. Also, before we get into the different types of browsers and the neat thingsyou can do to maximize their usefulness, I’m going to start at the very beginning of webbrowsing. You may already know a lot of what is being covered in the beginning of thispresentation, but considering a U.S. Senator (Lindsey Graham R-NC) just told NBC he’snever sent a single e-mail, I want to make sure everyone is on the same page, as peoplediffer in proficiency.

To get to a webpage, you can type the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) into a browser. TheURL, also known as the web address, tells the browser exactly where to find the page.However, most of the time, people get to a webpage by following a link from a differentpage or by searching for the page using a search engine.

Browsers have an address bar that shows the URL of the page you are on. To go to adifferent page, you can type an address in the address bar and then press Enter.You can also click on a link. Many text links are blue, and they may also beunderlined.A link may lead to another webpage, or it could lead to a document, video, or anyother type of file. If you're not sure if something's a link, hover the mouse overit. The pointer should change to a hand symbol.

Sometimes after you click on a link, you might want to go back to the previous page.You can do this using your browser's Back button. Once you've pressed the Backbutton, you can press the Forward button to follow the link again. If you hold theback button down on any browser, you will see a snapshot of the most recent sitesyou’ve visited. The Refresh button will reload the current page. If a website stopsworking, try using the Refresh button. While a page is loading, the Refresh buttonwill temporarily become the Stop button. Click this button to stop a webpage fromloading. Firefox and Internet Explorer have a Home Button. Chrome only has one ifyou set a Homepage in its settings.

(Go out and narrate demo) Firefox has a built-in search bar, which is located to theright of the address bar. To perform a search, just type what you're looking for inthe search bar, then press Enter. Your browser will then take you to the searchengine's website to show you the search results, which is a list of all of the websitesthat contain your search terms. There is a drop down menu where you can selectwhich search engine provider you would like to use. This search engine will remainthe default until you select a new one.

(Go out and narrate demo) In Chrome and Internet Explorer, the address bar is thesearch bar as well. Google Chrome will predict keywords and websites based on previoussearches and common searches. Chrome invented this when Google realized that peoplewere going to Google.com and typing in “www.” URLs into the search box, and it has alwaysbeen a feature of Chrome. Internet explorer came out with this with version IE 9 in 2011.

Internet Explorer is defaulted to search with Bing, and Chrome, since it’s made by Googledefaults to Google.

You can change your default engine in IE 11 by going to the magnifying glass drop downmenu in the address bar, and then going to add. This will bring up a new tab of InternetExplorer Gallery, where you can add the engine to IE.

In Google, you can change the default search engine by going to the three lines in the topright, what I call “the hamburger menu” and then go to Settings. Fourth down from the list,you can see “Search” and then change which search engine you use. Manage searchengines brings you to sites you may want to search within. This could be useful if yousearch a particular site frequently, such as Wikipedia.

Every time you load the website, the cookie tells the website’s server of your previousactivity. They are very useful and can save you time, as they make sites load faster. Theycannot carry viruses or install malware, but tracking cookies, especially 3rd party trackingcookies from advertisers, can compile long-term records of your browsing history.

If you've found a page you'd like to go back to later, you can add it toyour bookmarks (sometimes called favorites). Bookmarks make it easier to find apage later on. Instead of having to remember the exact web address, you canjust scroll through your bookmarks until you see the name of the page.In all three browsers, you can add a bookmark by clicking the star icon and thenselecting Add to Favorites. A Folder menu will appear, and you can select whichfolder you want to put the bookmark in. (Go out and narrate demo)

Suppose you visited a webpage a few days ago but forgot to bookmark it. You canfind the page again by using your history, which is a list of websites you've visited.Usually, pages will stay in the history for a certain number of days. To maintainprivacy, you can delete your history at any time. Chrome lets you delete individualentries, Firefox and IE only lets you do it based on a time range.(Go out and narrate demo)In Chrome: Hamburger History Select Clear Browsing data… or individuallyselect items. Clear Browsing Data has options to delete even more things.In Firefox: Start Page Settings Privacy Clear recent history. Menu appearsasking what you want to delete.In IE11: Settings Gear Internet Options Browsing History Delete… brings upmenu of what to delete. Settings allows you to change how often IE will do thisautomatically.

All browsers allow you to open a link in a new tab. This allows you to keep thecurrent page open instead of it being overwritten by the new page. For example, ifyou're reading an article that has a link in it, you can open the link in a new tab soyou can finish reading the article. Then you can go to the new tab to view the link.Tabs are designed to make browsing more convenient. You can open as many linksas you want, and they'll stay in the same browser window instead of cluttering upyour screen with multiple windows.To open a link in a new tab, right-click the link and click Open in new tab (thewording may vary from browser to browser). To close a tab, click the "X" on the tab.Tabs can be moved or pulled in and out of windows for easy access. Moving a tabcan be useful if you want to switch easily between two tabs. Pulling a tab into a newwindow is helpful if you want to view two webpages side by side. You can create anew window by pulling out the tab and dragging down. In Chrome, if one tabcrashes, it will not crash the entire browser, just the single tab.

Chrome and FirefoxRight Click and then pin tab. This will make the tab smaller and keep it open on yourbrowser while you do other things. The x is gone so you can’t accidentally close out. It alsowill load the tab as long as it stays pinned.

All three browsers offer a way for you to view content privately. It disables the storing ofbrowsing history and the cache. In 2007, several consumer advocacy groups asked the U.S. Federal TradeCommission to create a Do Not Track list for online advertising. The Do NotTrack (DNT) header requests that a web application disable either its tracking of anindividual user. All browsers allow you to enable Do Not Track.

Your browser can display many different types of documents, media, and otherfiles. But there are times when you'll want to access a file outside of your browser,meaning you’ll need to download it. Downloading enables you to do this by puttingthe file on your computer so you can access it.For example, suppose you needed to complete and print a form you found online.You could download it to your desktop, then open it with the appropriate program(such as Microsoft Word) to edit it. You can manage your downloads within yourbrowser.

Chrome and Firefox allow users to synchronize their bookmarks, history, andsettings across all devices with the browser installed by sending and receiving datathrough a user Account, which in turn updates all signed-in instances of thebrowser. This can be authenticated either through login credentials, or a syncpassphrase, meaning if you’re logged into Google at work and at home, all thesettings will sync across devices.
