    I ntroduction:

    Heathrow Airport is used by over 90 airlines which fly to 170 destinationsworldwide.

    It is owned and operated by BAA (British Airport Authority).

    It is the world's second busiest airport in total passenger traffic.

    It handles 35 million passengers a year.

    F eatures:

    The lighting inside the terminal building can be programmed to differentsettings according to season, time of day and weather conditions.

    Further manage the temperature of the interior brise soleil panels have been fitted to the exterior

    C onstruction F eatures:

    Its four storey are covered by a single-span undulating steel frameroof, with glass faades angled at 6.5 degrees to the vertical.

    To add to the overall ambient environment, the lighting inside theterminal building can be programmed to different settings according toseason, time of day and weather conditions.

    The main terminal building is referred to as Terminal 5A

    The two satellite buildings is referred to as Terminal 5B , 5C and 5D

    The Frontal building connecting roadways and Railways to T5A.

    It has 60 aircraft stands and capacity for 30 million passengersannually. There are more than 100 shops and restaurants.

    S ervices provided by Heathrow:

    An underground automated people mover (APM) system is used to

    transport passengers between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2,3.

    APM is only available to passengers and other authorized personnel.

    HOK provided interior architectural design for Phase I of the Heathrow

    Terminal 5 tracked-transit system (T5-TTS)

    Terminal 1:

    Contains a check-in hall a departure lounge with retail stores and other passenger services, and a baggage reclaim hall.

    It contains the bulk of the terminal's baggage handling system.

    Terminal 2:

    There will be two satellite buildings named Terminal 2B and Terminal 2C.

    Terminal 2B will provide Heathrow with 16 additional standsIt will be connected to the main terminal building by an underground link.

    Terminal 3:To handle flight departures for long-haul routes.

    The airport had a direct helicopter service to Central London from the

    gardens on the roof of the terminal building.

    Terminal 4:The forecourt has been upgraded to reduce traffic congestion and improve

    security.

    Two new stands to accommodate the Airbus A380 and a new baggagesystem has been installed.

    Terminal 5:Consists of a four storey main terminal building and two satellite buildings

    linked to the main terminal by an underground people mover transit system.

    The transport network around the airport has been extended to cope withthe increase in passenger numbers.

    A dedicated motorway spur has been built to the terminal includes a 3,800space multi-storey car park.

    A more distant long-stay car park for business passengers will be linked tothe terminal by a personal rapid transit system.

    There is a rail station nearby houses 6 platforms, two for the HeathrowExpress.

    The station is covered by a transparent roof which enable natural light toflood down onto the ends of the platforms.

    Five 50-person lifts will transport passengers straight up to the departureshall.

    A light rail system that uses driverless trains to shuttle passengersunderground between the Main Terminal T5A and the satellite T5B.

    R ailway links:

    Bus and coach:Many buses and coaches operate from the large Heathrow airport central

    bus station serving Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

    And also from bus stations at Terminals 4 and 5.

    C ar:

    Heathrow is accessible via the M4 motorway and A4 road (Terminals 13),

    the M25 motorway (Terminals 4 and 5), and the A30 road (Terminal 4).Additionally, there are car parks (not run by BAA) just outside the airport;

    these are connected to the terminals by shuttle buses.

    The two larger tunnels are each two lanes wide and are used for motorized

    traffic.

    The two smaller tunnels were originally reserved for pedestrians and

    bicycles

    Bicycle:

    There are (mainly off-road) bicycle routes to some of the terminals.Free bicycle parking places are available in car parks 1 and 1A.

    Problems observed at M umbai Airport:

    Lack of signs and communication for international transit passengers

    Once you're in, there are no seats in which to rest while waiting for your flight check-in desk to open.

    No less than 4-5 security screenings

    Luggage transfers can be of a worry and known to get misplaced.

    Smoking is allowed in a certain restaurant however an order from themenu may be required.

    Present services:Free shuttle service between the international and domestic terminals;

    runs every 30 minutes.Pre-paid taxi service between the international and domestic terminals
