Guest Lecture on “India and Self-reliance in IT” by Dr. Debesh Das, Pro-
fessor-CSE, Jadavpur University, Kolkata at I.T.S, Ghaziabad
In the series of Distinguished Talk by renowned speakers, an Invited Talk on “India and Self-
reliance in IT” was organized by CSI-Student Branch @ Department of IT on 09th January,
2013 at the institute. Professor-CSE, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, Chairman, CSI-Division III
(Applications), Ex-Minister in IT, Wet Bangal and President Free Software Movement in India,
Dr. Debesh Das was the invited speaker on this occasion. Besides teaching, he was very much
involved in Research with special interest in VLSI design, VLSI testing, Logic Synthesis, etc.
and is having 23 years experience in this particular field. He was a visiting Professor of Asian
Institute of Technology, Bangkok. He visited different countries like USA, Italy, China, Cana-
da, Denmark and many more for research studies and presentations.
While addressing the gathering, Dr. Das
emphasized on the usage of Free Software
and told that we should not go for Proprie-
tary Software and stop using the licensed
s/w. He told why Microsoft is not taking
any action against usage of pirated soft-
ware in India that it is the policy on how
to make people habitual of using their s/w
and later on by compulsion they have to
purchase it. He enlightened us several ad-
vantages of using Free Software like that we have complete control on every part of the soft-
ware being used, have complete permission to change the same if it is required and if we face
any of the problem in doing so then there are so many peoples in the world who are there for
the support. Dr. Das also informed that we should be free to use the software, its applications,
its permission and to enhance its capabilities as per our needs and this flexibility is not availa-
ble with the proprietary software. Dr. Das also informed that there are some other good
MNC’s like TCS, HCL and other software companies who are developing their applications
using free software technologies just because of having flexibility of permission to work as per
