We always love putting together a

cover contest, and this was no exception.

Taking inspiration from bridal fashion,

we worked with some of Winnipeg’s top

bakeries to create amazing options for

our cover. We’re seeing everything from

edible glitter to lace appliqués, and

sugar flowers to ombré colouring, and

we hope these trends inspire your own

stylish, chic wedding cakes.

September 2013

Dear Brides,

We are excited to fill you in on some huge changes happening to It’s

Love Magazine and WeddingsinWinnipeg.ca this fall.

Due to overwhelming demand, we have been running out of magazines

almost every month since we returned to free magazine subscriptions

in August 2012. Our direct-to-bride mailing list is currently at 2300

individuals and growing, and we have been getting regular requests

from both wedding vendors and our newsstand distributor to increase

magazine quantities further. Due to high demand from brides, we have

also had to cut back on our extensive list of salons, waiting rooms, and

offices that had the magazine regularly delivered to.

In response to the obvious demand for wedding content in Winnipeg,

we are changing our distribution to help reach a wider audience and

create better planning for you, our brides! Together with our desire

to more effectively reach brides and assist you in your planning, this

means we will be decreasing the number of times we print to become

a quarterly publication (once every three months; 4 issues yearly),

and in doing so, increase our print numbers with those issues. In

addition, we will continue producing a monthly e-magazine that will

be published online, with an exciting twist: each online magazine will

act as a guide to brides, tackling one major subject field in each issue

and engaging brides with your perfect vendors.

These changes will allow us to keep the print magazine free, especially

as our mailing list continues to grow. The print magazines will be much

larger, special editions which will incorporate all your favourite aspects

about It’s Love, and include more content, interviews, and tips for

brides than ever before!

Danica and Bryden share the sweetest

of memories—high school sweethearts

often do. But when it came time for the

proposal, things became a little bit sweeter.

She says, “I tend to snoop and, as a result, Bryden has never

successfully surprised me with any single gift, outing, or romantic

gesture. The worst part? I LOVE being surprised.” Bryden knew

that to propose to her, he needed to blind-side his love with

one of the most genuine moments of her life. He did pull off the

surprise in the end—they went for a drive after dinner, a common

event for the pair, when seemingly out of the blue Bryden

suggested they replace an old ring he had given Danica in high

school. Out came the ring of her dreams, and Bryden slipped it

right onto her finger.

A QUOTE FROM THE BRIDE-TO-BE

“We could not be any more elated with Brittany Mahood’s photos.

Recently, we were shocked when a routine X-ray showed that

Bryden had a massive tumor in his chest, which required immediate

intervention. We didn’t know what our future held. Our prayers

were answered when the tumor was confirmed to be benign.

Bryden continued to get stronger each day, but I was reduced

to tears when Brittany sent us the images from our engagement

session. Despite Bryden still recovering, she captured us perfectly,

and I couldn’t help but revel at how healthy he looked and how

at ease he was. They remind us how far we’ve come, and I look

forward to our wedding day knowing that we are blessed to

celebrate the occasion together with our health and our love intact.”

in Chef Rebecca Pearson of

Pineridge Hollow. Born and raised

in rural Manitoba, she discovered

cooking at a young age and grew

into her love for it as she grew up.

A graduate of the Culinary Arts

program at Malaspina University

on Vancouver Island, Chef Rebecca

first began working at a family

run restaurant with an emphasis

on locally grown food: “This place

was absolutely incredible. We used

fresh herbs and vegetables from the

backyard, fish from the dock, and

free range rabbit.” When she moved

back to Winnipeg, Chef Rebecca

apprenticed under celebrated

Winnipeg chef Luc Jean, former

head chef at La Vieille Gare in

St. Boniface. In 2010 she brought

her expertise on locally grown fare

to Pineridge Hollow, where she was

promoted to head chef within just

two weeks of working there.

YOUR WEDDING TO BE UNIQUE, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME HAVING SEEN SO MANY

WEDDINGS THAT NOTHING SEEMS UNIQUE ANYMORE?

Early on, I realized that our wedding didn't have to be unique in every way just because I am a

wedding planner—it just had to be personal and represent who Ryan and I are as individuals and

as a couple. A bride would go nuts trying to make every single detail unique and, in my opinion,

it's an unrealistic expectation for her to take on. If you love something you saw in a magazine or

online, go for it—but just find a way to personalize it.

WERE THERE ANY DECISIONS THAT WERE PARTICULARLY HARD TO MAKE FOR YOU?

WHAT ADVICE MIGHT YOU GIVE TO A BRIDE IN A SIMILAR SITUATION?

In my professional life, I never have difficulty making decisions for my clients and I find it quite

easy to be objective. For some reason when it came to our wedding, everything was different.

I found myself changing my mind all the time and finding it really hard to focus on my own

wedding. I strongly believe in sticking to a timeline and encourage clients to do things ahead of

time, but I definitely didn't practice what I preach for many aspects of the day. I think part of

this was to do with a really busy planning season for our 2013 Soirée brides, but the other part

was the pressure you feel as a bride (and especially as someone who does this professionally)

to have the perfect, most beautiful day. As the wedding got closer, I had to remind myself that

my wedding was about us and not about my company. I told myself that it didn't have to be the

most beautiful wedding Soirée had ever produced, it just had to be my favourite.

XPERT ADVICEE

I began to focus on incorporating elements that were important to us as a couple,

so I found ways to bring in our friends and family in as many parts of the day as

possible. We chose amazing food, created a really meaningful ceremony with our

officiant, who is a close family friend, and focused on having fun and enjoying this

once-in-a-lifetime experience. Now that I can objectively look back on the day, I

love all our personal touches and wouldn't change a thing (except the fact that I

didn't get ready first and made myself late).

From the beginning of the planning phases, I knew I had to hire a great team

of professionals that would keep me calm and relaxed and not cause me to

micromanage all day. My team was amazing. From beginning to end, they were

on the ball and never caused me to question a thing. It is so important to choose

vendors that you connect with on a personal level and that you feel comfortable

with, but it is also important to choose companies that have experience behind them

so that they are prepared to handle anything the day throws at them.

IS THERE A SINGLE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU HAD BEEN GIVING TO BRIDES

AS A PRO THAT YOU REALLY HAD TO TAKE INTO ACCOUNT FOR YOURSELF?

I always tell my brides to remember to take moments

during the day to pause and take it all in. It is truly the

longest, but quickest, day of your life—if you don't stop

and enjoy it, you'll never remember it.

There were moments in the day where I

remember stopping and looking at all of our

amazing friends and family that took time out

of their lives to be there with us and it still

amazes me—from Toronto to Dubai, they were

all there and that was so special to us. I've never

been at a large event like that where you know

every face in the room and every one there

cares about you, so it was a surreal feeling. It

also helped to calm my nerves when I stopped

and told myself that there were no strangers,

they were all people who loved us. There are

still snippets of the day that are a little fuzzy

for me, but the photos and video take you back

and allow you to see moments that you didn't

even know happened. After the wedding, there

were a few days where we felt a little bit sad

that it was now all over and that moment in our

lives was behind us. Many brides feel something

similar to this, but then in a few short weeks,

you get to see your photos and video and relive

the day from a different perspective and we

really enjoyed that!


THE CEREMONYThe ceremony was held in my

parents’ yard, which I had

dreamed about since I was a

little girl. It was so special to

be married in a place with so

many happy memories.

I always tell my brides to take their

time when they walk down the aisle

and without knowing it, I virtually ran

down the aisle!

We had a live piano, cello and

vocalist for our ceremony and it

made the atmosphere so much

more beautiful and emotional.

THE PLANNING

I loved finding the unique details that would make it OUR wedding.

For example, we decided to hand-make paper flowers for our place

cards and we had many laughs between my mom, my sister and myself

sitting night after night making close to 200 paper flowers. In the end, it

was one of my favourite details and makes for some wonderful memories.

THE PHOTOSWe have an incredible

group of friends and family

who made up our wedding

party and spending the

afternoon with them was

so much fun.

The whole photo session was

relaxing and even though we

started the day behind schedule, I

never felt rushed. We took almost

all of our wedding photos on the

University of Manitoba campus

and I love the mix of architecture

that it brought to our photos,

as well as the fact that it isn't

used often for wedding photos.

of their craft and I can't imagine

spending the day with anyone else!

THE RECEPTIONWe chose to hold our wedding

at the Manitoba Club before

we were even engaged. I love their food and their staff is

always incredibly accommodating.

Even though I found myself not

hungry on my wedding day (and I

love food), all of our guests raved

about the meal and had a great time.

For our emcees, we chose my cousin

(who is also a friend of Ryan's) and

one of our mutual friends, and we

are still being told that ours were

the best emcees people had seen

at a wedding. I loved that they were

able to relate to each other but

also had a real personal, long term

connection with both of us.

One of my favourite moments of

the day was dancing to the Danny

Kramer Band. He has been on

my "must have at my wedding"

list for many years and they were

incredible. All I wanted to do was

dance all night long and I did! Our

friends still can't believe how great

it was and the dance floor was

packed until the bitter end.

Despite their large guest list, Isanne and Jordan wanted their wedding to feel intimate and family oriented,

so they tapped into their creative sides and started coming up with great ideas, such as placing framed family photos at each guest

table (their cousins raced to collect the most at the end of the night to take home as keepsakes!). The ceremony was a traditional

Jewish wedding, and featured one of the most unique details of the day: a “well wishes” card was sent out with each invitation, and

guests responded with messages or advice for the wedding couple. Isanne strung each card onto ribbon, and hung them underneath the

chuppah to create a blanket of well wishes for the couple to be married underneath. With their first anniversary behind them, one of the

most cherished memories from the day is Jordan successfully managing a one-handed, close-eyed grab of Isanne’s runaway veil, as they

were in the middle of a kiss for a picture.

Old-world romancemis an underlying theme throughout Lauren and Eric’s love story. Their proposal took place in

Old Quebec, on a bitterly cold winter evening after a trudge through the snow in front of the Chateau Frontenac. The beautiful location

sparked an idea to infuse their wedding with a similar old-world feel, envisioning a Victorian-inspired evening mixed with a country

atmosphere. Lauren combined a rich palette of deep brown and shades of purple with ivory lace, touches of burlap with mason jars, and

wrought-iron candlesticks with hanging tea lights.

Steve’s parents met Jodi long before he did. They knew she would be a

perfect match for their son, so they got her number and set up a blind

date for the pair to meet. Not long after, Steve popped the question

and Jodi said yes, and they had Steve’s parents to thank.

The couple had their dream wedding come true at the St. Boniface

Golf Club, a short 5 minute drive from downtown. With its beautiful

cathedral ceilings and high post and beam construction, the banquet

room needed minimal decor to achieve a polished look. “The staff

during the reception were friendly and helpful, and the room looked

just as we had hoped,” says Jodi. Her favourite feature, though, was

the food: “We have heard numerous compliments on the food from our

guests since the wedding!”

Jodi and Steve loved the work Chris Jensen Studios did on their

big day. “He is incredibly easy going and goes with the flow. He was

amazing!” says Jodi. Chris stayed with the couple all day, being sure to

capture everything from the girls getting ready early in the morning to

the fireworks display that Steve surprised Jodi with at midnight. “We

had so many of our guests compliment us on Chris. He was so great

with all of our guests and family and got amazing pictures!” says Jodi.

RECEPTION SPOTLIGHT

Christina and Rahim spent six years working together at the

Marlborough Hotel. They shared many laughs as they set up,

served, and took down weddings over the weekends. When they

realized they were in love and the time came to plan a wedding of

their own, there was no question what venue they would choose.

The couple held their ceremony in the Marlborough’s historic

Churchill Room, a gorgeous 1914 Gothic Revival hall with stained

glass windows, hanging chandeliers, and vaulted ceilings not

commonly seen in today’s architecture. The reception moved

them into the Skyview Ballroom, the aptly named eighth floor

great room with incredible city views of downtown Winnipeg.

“While our guests enjoyed the beautiful sunset out the Skyview

windows, our wedding party had the unique opportunity to

take photos on the roof at sunset against a stone wall that was

beautifully designed. Many of our friends did not believe these

pictures were taken in Winnipeg!” says Christina.
