Write up for Lota & Linking Ring

For June it was “Show Off Your Favorite Trick” this could have been an old favorite, a new favorite or even a favorite that you had no clue was your favorite. There were two guests in attendance tonight: Bill Church and Apollo Ellis welcome gentlemen hope you had fun please come back next month. After a very brief business meeting and a short break we had our performers:

Larry Wilfong – Larry first performed an original classic two door Die Box made by Homer Hudson. He followed this with an exhibition of a vintage Die Box made by Percy Abbott in the 1940’s. Both the box and the die were completely examined by members of the audience and proven to have no concealed weight nor a shell. Yet, when the die was placed inside the box it could be heard and actually SEEN inside the box before it vanished and all four doors opened to prove it!

Wayne Corrigan – showed us a Mental Card Wheel Prediction effect. Wayne was able to not only predict the jumbo card in the envelope held by Jay but cause a transposition of the predicted card and one not predicted.

Frank Pastula – our former Ring President demonstrated an amazing dedication to his craft by donning a blue blazer in 115 degree heat and showing his favorite sponge ball routine. Talk about balls! Frank also did a cute routine using a handkerchief and a deck of cards.

Jay Gorham – Performed a card routine called Trilogy. Three spectators selected cards that had random numbers on the back. Jay was able to name and predict both the card values and the numbers on the back.

Clark Wirthlin – After displaying a few of his favorite Houdini items from his collection demonstrated that the spirit of Houdini lives on when a candle that was part of the collection suddenly lit up.

Stuart Friedman – Gave us a preview of what he’ll be performing at next month’s show. Stuart did a Professor’s Nightmare routine. What made this stand out was the presentation that Stuart used. By using some factual information from his high school science class it went from just being another rope trick to a very entertaining story illustrated with magic. This was a good lesson in presentation.

Bob Coluzzi – Showed jumbo ESP cards and made a predication that was placed in small paper bag. The cards were eliminated in a random order until one remained. The prediction in the bag matched the last card.

Bill Newhouse – Demonstrated just what a skilled craftsman and engineer he is by showing us a small wooden box he made. This device will light up, shoot cards in the air, playback recorded sound, has Bluetooth connectivity and more. About the only things it didn’t do were make coffee and tell time but knowing Bill he could probably figure out how to work those features in as well.

David Goldberg – Closed out the evening by showing off a new favorite of his. A deck of cards were shuffled and cut by Frank Pastula. Then the cut was marked by a sealed envelope which contained a predication. David had accurately predicted the card that was underneath the envelope.

After all of the performances everybody showed and swapped tricks and moves and other bits of business. It was a very fun and enjoyable meeting.

MONTHLY Ring Report

A 21st Century Magical MasterpieceWith the untimely passing of Japanese magic maker Mikame’ enthusiasts the world over lost one of our greatest sources for well-made wooden props. His individually handmade (by him personally) apparatus included both close-up and stage items. These ranged from adaptations of classic magic methods to innovative solutions originated in the fertile mind of Master Mikame’. Here is one such example of his ingenuity…

“EFFECT: Magician hands all props to audience to examine. A volunteer places the block into the tube and secures it with a stick. As everyone can see, it is impossible for the block to exit the tube while the stick is in place. Of course, when the stick is removed the block falls. The magician plans to attempt the impossible-getting the block to drop out, even though the stick remains secured.

After he succeeds in this amazing feat, the audience can re-examine all of the props!”This presentation is truly amazing and the handling is so clean. It does not require any suspicious moves, nor does the secret involve a magnetic stick or sliding panels in the tube etc. as in other Vampire Block type magic props.

I suggest you check YouTube to see Master Mikame’ performing one of his favorites, the FINAL PENETRATION.

Letter From Your PREZ...

Practice makes perfect.

Practice makes perfect. If you’ve been in magic for any length of time that is the one piece of advice that is always given. I’d like to add one more bit to that advice: Practice with thought makes perfect. Put some thought into a move or routine and that’s when the real magic comes out. As you are working on a new effect think about what the motivating factors are. It will greatly improve the effect and make your practice session more productive.

One thing I have done to improve my practice sessions is record my performance and then and watch it. I just use my phone. Doing this helped me cut out unnecessary words and actions. This method will also help with prop management. Left pocket or right pocket? Table? It will take a few tries and the first few attempts may be awful but gradually they will improve and before you know it you’ve got a great presentation or routine.

All of this brings me to our next Ring 55 meeting on July 19th. We will be doing a rehearsal or practice run through for the July 23rd show at El Pueblo Norte. So if you’re on the bill practice, practice and think about your performance and let’s have a great show rehearsal.

See you there.
