Other ConsiderationsWaterborne coatings are shear

sensitive to being stirred and pumped.Stirring and pumping can degradesome waterborne coatings. Binkspumps, however, are designed forextremely low shear characteristics.A Binks oscillating agitator is recom-mended for keeping pigment insuspension without degrading thematerial. Binks fluid regulators andfilters are also recommended for theirminimal low shear characteristics.

Binks Automatic Drains

Fits all Binks oil andwater extractors,coalescers, and dryers.Merely remove thedrain screw and replaceit with the Binksautomatic drain andfurnished nipple. Oil,water, sludge and othercontaminants drainingfrom the compressedair line will be trapped

in the bowl. The accumulation of liquidin the bowl causes the drain float torise. This action admits bowl airpressure into a piston chamber which,in turn, opens a bleed valve and allowsthe liquid in the bowl to be expelledunder pressure. When the liquid leveldrops sufficiently, the float closes anddraining stops. The adaptive nipplewith fit 1/8” NPT pipe or 3/8” - 27machine threads. This makes fieldconversions simple.

Binks Tech Tip . . . When should cartridges and filters be replaced?

The service life of cartridges and filter depends on several factors including breathingrate/volume, concentration of contaminants, temperature and humidity.

• Replace chemical cartridges when you detect odor or taste of vapors, or when youexperience eye, nose or throat irritation.

• Replace pre-filters or filters when you experience increased resistance to breathing.

WARNING!Binks Millennium paint spray respirators are not to be used with urethane paints orother paints containing di-isocyanates. Di-isocyanates have a low odor threshold andare not easily detectable by smell. A dangerous level of di-isocyanates can breakthrough a charcoal filter cartridge before the user is able to smell it. Painters usingsuch paints must use an air-supplied respirator.

Understanding Pressure Drop

Pressure Drop BasicsUnderstanding pressure drop requires abasic knowledge of CFM (cubic feet perminute) and psi (pounds per squareinch). CFM refers to the given volumeof air that flows past a given point inone minute. PSI is the amount of forcepushing the cubic foot of air throughthe hose or tool.

The amount of air that a toll consumesall remain constant for a given set ofconditions. Pressure will always dropwhen the tool is turned on and when theair begins to flow through the hose. Inaddition, pressure drop will vary inrelation to any adjustment made on thetool.

The same pressure loss principles applywhen moving fluid through a hose. Besure to consider pressure loss whenchoosing fluid hose and fittings.

Pressure Drop Points

Losses in pressure (psi) are dependenton the variables of hose length, hosediameter, volume (cfm), and the numberand design of quick disconnects. Tominimize the effects of pressure dropand the resulting lack of volume,consider the following.

• Frictional resistance between the fluidand the walls of the hose.

• Internal resistance (shear) - fluidmoves faster through the center of thehose and slower against the walls.

• Change in direction of air or fluidthrough the system.

• Volume at any given time as deter-mined by back pressure.

• The number of system connection,adapters, nipples, valves, filters andair and fluid controls.

• Hose I.D. - use the minimum I.D.necessary for each application

• Hose length - pressure drop isproportional to hose length

• Surface of the hose’s inner tube - arough surface can increase pressuredrop up to 50%.

Technical Data

This chart is for approximating andshould only serve as a guide in sizing airhose. Pressure drops are directlyproportional to hose lenghts. Thatmeans that if hose length doubles, forexample, pressure drop doubles.

Example:• 100’ x 1/2” I.D. hose at 40 cfm has a

pressure loss of 17 1/2 psi.• 200’ x 1/2” I.D. will lose 35 psi• 50’ x 1/2” I.D. will lose between 8 to 9

psi.
