St. Patrick A note from Fr. John Odeyemi,

This will be a three part reflection: Overview, Challenges and Prospects

Pastoring in an African American Catholic Community of Faith: Challenges and Prospects.

John Segun Odeyemi

From July 1-6, 2019, I had the unique opportunity to attend an intensive one-week program of the Institute for Black Catholic Studies (IBCS) at Xavier University of Louisiana, New Orleans. I owe a debt of gratitude to Gwen Young, Dr. Greta Stokes, the Black Catholic Congress of Pittsburgh, the IBCS and Fr. Chris Donley. They all provided the scholarship/funding needed for me to attend this program. I chose from the available courses, Pastoring in an African American Catholic Community of faith. It was a beautiful week of praying and studying with others and learning about African American Catholicism. Attending this one-week summer class on Pastoring in an African-American

parish has certainly been a learning curve that is absolutely necessary for the

success of anyone not born within the African-American culture to be able to

minister effectively within it. Not unlike many instances where one is inserted

into a different culture from the one, he or she has grown, integration is a

process of give and take on both the part of the new comer and the receiving or

hosting community. My experience thus far has been based on this reciprocity

of an embrace and an effort to know each other. Mostly things have worked out

but occasionally, there are avoidable misunderstandings. Given the fact that it

seems there will be more foreign priests coming to work within the United

States, and many priests of African descent in the African American communities

of faith, the conversations focused on challenges and prospects. The following

are some of the major issues I identified, brought forward and discussed with

the hope that it will help foreign priests and the African American faith family to

work together.

Join us in the Celebration

Everyone is invited to join us in honoring our organist and friend Dr. John Raevens in the

celebration of his 90th birthday. The festivities will take place immediately after the

9 a.m. Mass Sunday, August 11, in the second floor conference room.

Please call Catherine Calfo, our church cantor, (412) 680-8947 if you are interested in helping us

and/or planning to attend. RSVP by August 4.

Our guests who came to the Red Door for lunch on Saturday, July 13th, were greeted by dozens of smiling and joy-filled volunteers and were surprised to be welcomed inside to our Lawless Hall dining room for a delicious summer meal. The Pitt and CMU students from the Catholic Newman Club, accompanied by Brother Thomas Skamai, arrived early to prepare lunch and stayed until early afternoon to make sure all was clean and back in order. Also in attendance and present to generously and lovingly serve our guests were some of the regular Saturday volunteers as well as a group from the St. Bernard/Our Lady of Grace Ladies of Charity. About 150 men, women, and children filled our dining room and were served fresh fruit salad, coleslaw, chili with cheese, hot dogs, and an abundance of desserts. All seemed to enjoy the

background piano music that was played skillfully by one of the students. Gratitude filled the hearts of so many as God's merciful and infinite love permeated every aspect of the morning. For the ones who were serving, gratitude to know and love God's special presence in and through the ones being served, and for the ones being served, gratitude to perceive and experience God's loving care and provision through each hand and heart offered in service to the them. Thank you for your continued prayers and support of the Red Door ministry!

African American History

The Negro Silent Protest Parade was a silent march of about 10,000 African Americans along Fifth Avenue starting at 57th Street in New York City on July 28, 1917. The event was organized by the NAACP, church, and community leaders to protest violence directed towards African Americans, such as recent lynching's in Waco and Memphis. The parade was precipitated by the East St. Louis riots in May and July 1917 where at least 40 black people were killed by white mobs, in part touched off by a labor dispute where blacks were used

for strike breaking.
