Page 1: I've Had It! Frustration with Modernism in the Mass

I’ve had it!

Today I experienced the most grotesque homily I have ever heard.

It’s the first Sunday of Advent here in Korea. I am attending Mass at a different camp

as part of my supervisory duties as senior US Army chaplain assistant in this area. The

Priest is a 79-year old German born religious of the Oblates of St. Benedict, and the

Benedictines have done wonderful work over the years in helping establish Catholicism

in Korea.

The Priest began his homily by explaining a bit of the tradition of observing Advent. He

then abruptly transitioned to a short discourse on heliocentrism (never formally

accepted by the Church) in an attempt to explain the view of the 19th century nihilists

who despaired of man’s meaning the universe. This led to an attempt to force Divine

Revelation to submit to some atheist philosopher’s conception of the Big Bang theory

which could only be described as grotesque.

He went on about hydrogen, evolution, asserting that the age of the earth was “15

billions of years” and that man was “from below” but Christ was “from above.” It was

shocking to hear this in a liturgical setting, and it was a blasphemy to assert such

theories in the holy sacrifice of the Mass. I was ready to prophesy like Jeremiah of old

and say, “thus saith the Lord, the God and Father of Jesus Christ: I did not send you to

teach my people these ideas!” But my daughter grabbed me and whispered, “dad, at

least wait until Mass is over.”

The entire thing was so contrived, forced and grotesque that I nearly got up and left. I

don’t want to turn this into a note about the error of evolutionism which Pope St. Pius X

taught was at the root of the “synthesis of all heresies”, Modernism. I have grappled

with the Modernists at length on Catholic Answers Forums. They are a stubborn lot not

at all interested in Tradition as defined by the Magisterium.

I spoke to the Priest after Mass and told him that he had committed a grave evil by

asserting these scientific theories in his homily as though they were Catholic dogmas. I

asked him, “didn’t you swear an oath against Modernism at your ordination? It is not

permitted for you to teach this.” He uttered something incomprehensible to me (he has

a strong German accent) and gave me that “oh you silly fool, you don’t know what you

are taking about” look and refused to discuss it with me any further.

Since I returned from Iraq in 2004 I have heard Priests in my own chapels encourage

the Faithful to watch Dan Brown’s detestable blasphemies The DaVinci Code and

Angels and Demons; I have heard them advise the Faithful to read the Gospel of Judas;

I have heard them advise us to watch the movie version of the Nikos Kazantzakis book

The Last Temptation of Christ which has been on the Catholic Index of Forbidden

Books since it was first published in the 1950s; and now this indignity to have

Darwinism shoved down my throat in the Catholic Mass!

I have tried to remain patient and respectful with regard to the tragically compromised

Novus Ordo Mass and the banal and theologically shallow Glory & Praise hymnal that is

used to promulgate the post-concilliar religion among the faithful. I am afraid that I can

no longer maintain the status of a quiet, docile, obedient sheeple. I honestly don’t know

what to do. But I am no longer willing to just sit and take it.

Pope Paul VI who presided over Vatican II and promulgated the Novus Ordo Mass said

himself in 1972, “the smoke of Satan has entered the Church.” Its time for some us laity

to put on a gas mask and grab a spiritual fire extinguisher and get to work putting the

devil’s fire out.
