HOW DOES OS DO APOLOGETICS?
Our world is changing dramatically yet many
Christians still rely on cookie-cutter approaches to
evangelism and apologetics. Most of these methods
assume that people are open and interested in
spiritual insight when increasingly most peopleare not. Our urgent need, then, is the capacity
to persuade—to make a convincing case for the
gospel to people who are not interested in it.
In his magnum opus, Os Guinness offers a
comprehensive presentation of the art and
power of creative persuasion. Following thetradition of Erasmus, Pascal, G. K. Chesterton,
C. S. Lewis and Malcolm Muggeridge, Guinness
demonstrates how apologetic persuasion requires
both the rational and the imaginative. Persuasion
is subversive, turning the tables on listeners’
assumptions to surprise them with signals of
transcendence and the credibility of the gospel.
Discover afresh the persuasive power of Christian
witness.

PRAISE FOR FOOL’S TALK
“Os Guinness’s books have been invaluable for the
Christian church for decades. A great deal of what I
know about communicating the faith in modern times I
learned from him. This book does not disappoint.”
—Tim Keller, Redeemer Presbyterian Church
“In a battle of ideas, unlike a battle between nations, the
goal is not to vanquish the opponents but to win them.
. . . No one does this better than my colleague Os Guinness.”
—Ravi Zacharias, author and speaker
“We simply must quickly recover the art of persuasionthat loves and awakens souls. . . . The gospel, Os
reminds us, is the highest form of love. The best news.
And the only hope for a world awaiting its redemption.”
—Kelly Monroe Kullberg, editor, Finding God at
Harvard , founder, The Veritas Forum
“Many people are so sure they know what Christiansare going to say that they don’t actually listen. Guinness
keeps them off-balance, much in the way Jesus’ parables
caught his audiences off-guard. . . . He advocates a
broad range of arguments, all of them imaginative,
but all of them pointing to the surprising truth, the
unpredictable love of God.”
—William Edgar, professor of apologetics,
Westminster Theological Seminary
FROM THE INTRODUCTION
Loss of persuasion? It might seem bizarre,
almost unimaginable, that Christian com-
munication has lost something so central to
its mission. Yet in profound ways it has, and
that is why our challenge is to think aboutapologetics in ways that are not only fresh
but faithful and independent—faithful in
the sense that they are shaped by the impera-
tives of Christian truths, and independent
in the sense that they are not primarily
beholden to ways of thinking that are alien
to Christian ways of thinking. . . .
How can we speak for our Lord in a manner
that does justice to the wonder of who God
is, to the profundity of the good news he has
entrusted to us, to the wily stubbornness of
the human heart and mind, as well as to thewide-ranging challenges of today’s world and
the mind-boggling prospects of tomorrow’s?
In short, how can we as followers of Jesus be
as truly persuasive as we desire to be?

Steve Hayner was serving as president of
Columbia Seminary and was healthy and fit
when he found out he had terminal pancreatic
cancer. He and his wife Sharol embarked on a
journey together with their children that soon
included tens of thousands of visits from friendsand acquaintances via the CaringBridge website.
The overwhelming response to their posts on the
website attested to the surprising and engaging
way that they chose to live in the face of death. As
a result they uncovered the remarkable truth that
God, our good Shepherd, provides a feast for us
when we are in the valley of the shadow of death
as well as in the green pastures.
Steve was always known for signing letters and
emails, “joyfully.” These pages, including reflec-
tions from some of those closest to Steve and
Sharol, offer us a hope-filled glimpse into what
it means to walk with God in honesty, with joy,
even through great pain.

“Steve and Sharol Hayner spent their lives teaching
everyone who knew them just what it means to truly
live for Christ. Then during Steve’s final months of
life, they taught us how to truly die in Christ. . . . This
small book will now help countless others to find the still,
small voice of God in the midst of their own tempest.”
—Richard Stearns, president, World Vision US,
author of Unfinished and The Hole in Our Gospel
“Steve Hayner has been first a hero and then a friend
since I met him many years ago. . . . To follow the
journey that he and Sharol traveled together through
the valley of the shadow of death was a privilege and aheartbreak and an education in hope.”
—John Ortberg, senior pastor of Menlo Park
Presbyterian Church, author of Soul Keeping
“Seldom have I been as moved as in reading these
epistles from Steve and Sharol Hayner—each ending
‘Joyfully yours.’ Through his life Steve helped so many
to find life in all its fullness in Christ. Now, with his
beloved Sharol, he guides us through the ending of life in
fullness of hope.”
—Leighton Ford, author of The Attentive Life
“Steve and Sharol hide nothing of their struggle, and
yet withhold nothing of their bold faith. This is a rare
gift, to be invited into a journey so utterly full and
overflowing with both the depth of pain and loss and yet the anchor of hope. I will always count it as one of
my greatest treasures to have known Steve in both life
and death.”
—Gary A. Haugen, president, International
Justice Mission
