Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to the Ivy Hawn Band Program! My name is Kyle Halpin, and I am the band director here at Ivy Hawn Charter School of the Arts. I graduated from Stetson University with a degree in Music Education. I am very excited to get started with the 2018-2019 school year. This handbook is to inform you with the rules and procedures of the program, and to ensure an enjoyable and educationally rewarding music experience. PLEASE TAKE THE TIME TO READ ALL OF THE HANDBOOK! There is a contract/agreement page at the end of the handbook, that students should turn in by the third Monday of school (August 27th). The students in this program will be accountable for every piece of information that is in the handbook, and can be used as a reference.

Band is different from a typical general music course or any other music course offered at this school. This class is a skill and performance based class. It is unlike a history course with an emphasis on music. This is a lab class, seeking to develop skill and ability. We learn about concepts like rhythm (math) reading notation (reading), develop motor skills and ability to hear and distinguish correct notes and rhythms that we are supposed to play. This classroom is a team; and we are all working on becoming better at our craft. In addition to class time, it is highly recommended that students spend time at home, before, or after school to practice. There are also occasional after school rehearsals, and performances, and being in this band means there is a responsibility to the group; your team.

Any student with a desire to succeed will do so in this classroom. There are many students that develop the skills to be successful in any endeavor that they pursue after leaving this school. Being part of band is a great way to develop skills, a leisure activity, or have the opportunity to perform in amateur, semi-professional, or professional ensembles. The possibilities are endless!

I hope that membership will be rewarding, productive, and fun! I hope you are as excited as I am to get to work!

Sincerely,

Kyle HalpinDirector of BandsIvy Hawn Charter School of the Arts

Course DescriptionsBeginning Band

Beginning Band is open to all students during the 1st 9 weeks of each year. Previous musical training and music reading is of course helpful, but not necessary.

Instrument SelectionBeginning Band students will have an opportunity to try out several instruments. Selection of instrument is based upon student interest, physical characteristics (formation of lips and teeth), rhythmic coordination (percussion instruments), and instrumentation requirements (the number of students playing each instrument must be kept within reasonable limits in order to be able to perform the music written for the modern band.)

Instrument Assembly, Care, and MaintenanceProper assembly and care are necessary to minimize repairs and frustration caused by a malfunctioning instrument.

Tone ProductionThis Includes all of the elements necessary to produce a musical sound on a wind or percussion instrument. Embouchure (the way the lips and facial muscles are used and applied to the mouthpiece), use of air, and concept of correct sound for a given instrument are learned.

ArticulationArticulation involves the correct use of the tongue in playing an instrument. It is very similar to pronunciation in speech.

Music ReadingAfter students can demonstrate basic tone production and articulation concepts, music reading is introduced. Students are introduced to notes and rhythms gradually. Students only learn notes and rhythms they are able to play and apply. New notes and rhythms are added as control improves. Music reading involves learning the name of the note, the sound of the note (pitch) the duration of the note (rhythm), and the fingering of the note on the instrument. It is essential that students practice daily, to avoid getting behind. Each skill builds on the last skill, so progress depends on keeping up.

Ear Training

The ability to discriminate pitch, to play in tune with others, and to hear a musical line is a skill that can and must be developed by music students. Students can learn to play in tune, understand and appreciate good tone quality, and learn to blend and balance their sound with their fellow musicians. Most students have quite good natural pitch perception; musicians develop an above average awareness of the sounds around them by learning to listen critically.

ScalesStudents will learn 7 major scales in Beginning Band. Students will also be able to write and label each of their scales. Almost all music is based upon some kind of scale. Knowledge of scales is essential in learning to play an instrument. Percussion students learn scales on the mallet instruments, and in addition learn rudiment – exercises that build coordination and control necessary to play percussion parts. Students will rehearse afterschool when necessary for concert preparation. The director will notify parents and students a minimum of one weeks’ notice when scheduling additional rehearsals not previously announced at the beginning of each quarter.

Symphonic BandSymphonic Band is open to all students that have completed a year of beginning band. All of the basic techniques that were taught in beginning band are further developed and refined in Symphonic Band. Private lessons are highly recommended. Private teachers can help with preparation for All-County Band auditions, preparation of difficult music, and selection and preparation of Solo and Ensemble music for performance at F.B.A. Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment. Students will rehearse after school when necessary to prepare for a performance. The director will notify parents and students a minimum of one weeks’ notice when scheduling additional rehearsals not previously announced at the beginning of each quarter.

Jazz BandJazz Band is a full year class and consists of members of the Symphonic Band. This ensemble will learn to perform a variety of musical styles, including Swing, Jazz-Rock, Latin, and Ballad. Students will rehearse afterschool when necessary for concert preparation. The director will notify parents and students a minimum

of one weeks’ notice when scheduling additional rehearsals not previously announced at the beginning of each quarter.

Band Classroom Rules1. Be prepared to Work – Have all materials (instrument, chair, stand, binder w/ music,

pencil)2. Be on Time – That means in your chair, with your instrument, music, and set-up by two

minutes after the late bell rings3. Raise your hand for teacher attention – If you call out of turn, it disrupts the classroom

environment and peer learning4. Be uplifting to your neighbors/classmates – Negative attitudes toward an individual are

not to be made in this classroom. We are all trying really hard to produce the right sounds, and it takes time/experimentation to get it just right.

There are not many rules in my classroom. However, I expect that each student follows these rules, for their success, as well as the success of everyone in the program hinges on the students doing what is expected of them.

Band Classroom Procedures1. Students will dispose of food and gum before entering the band room. The only

exception is BOTTLED water. 2. Students will refrain from boisterous, distracting behaviors in class. Behaviors like

this are distracting in a positive learning environment and are never acceptable, not from any teacher.

3. Students are expected to enter the band room in an orderly manner. Backpacks will go under the student’s chair, and will keep instruments in the instrument storage room.

4. Students must be in their seats ready to play by two minutes after the late bell. This includes being set up with their chair, music stand, binder, music, pencil, and instrument. After two minutes, roll will be taken.

5. Students will only play THEIR instrument/ instrument assigned to them. Do not touch or play property that does not belong to you.

6. Students are to bring ALL band music and books to class in a binder everyday.7. All instruments must be kept neatly in the instrument storage room. 8. Students are expected to attend any rehearsals or performances that are scheduled for

their group. Any absences must be approved by the director three weeks before a concert and two days before a rehearsal to be considered. Communication is key, and I will accommodate students involved in other activities/emergencies.

9. Band students are expected to practice at home on a regular basis. A minimum of 30 minutes a day is recommended.

Materials Black 1 inch binder Page Protectors Set of Dividers Lined Paper Pencils Accent on Achievement Book 1 or 2 for your particular instrument (1 for beginning band,

Book 2 for Symphonic Band). Instrument and Instrument supplies (Reeds, slide grease, valve oil, etc.) Band Fee - $50 – This annual fee pays for new music, festival registration fees,

instrument repair/upgrades, etc. Cash or check payable to “Ivy Hawn Band Program.”

Financial ObligationsBeing in band costs money and brings on certain financial obligations that are the responsibility of the band member. Students will be required to provide their own instrument, accessories (such as reeds, valve oil, etc.), book, and any other expenses that may arise during the year. Please contact the director if you are having problems meeting these obligations and this issue will be worked out confidentially. No student will be denied participation in band due to financial issues.

Band FeeOperating a band program is an expensive venture. The school is able to provide only minimal funding for the band program. There is a band fee of $50. This fee is a year-long investment into your child’s band experience which will be a memorable and enjoyable one! If there are any conflicts with the fee, please contact me and we can work out the fee confidentially with payment installments if necessary.

I want to try to collect all of the band fees by Monday, October 1st, 2018. If you need any help with a payment plan or if you have issues with the fee, please meet with me!

Grading Policy

The final grade will be determined by the following criteria and grading scale:

40% Formative Assessments: Grading Scale:Including attendance, participation, practice A 90% - 100%logs, assignments, quizzes, and homework. B 80% - 89%

C 70% - 79%60% Summative Assessments: D 60% - 69%Including performances, tests, and final exams. F 59% and below

Page 7: Ivy Hawn Charter School Of The Arts€¦ · Web viewIvy Hawn Charter School Of the Arts Band Handbook 2018-2019 Mrs. Kelly Conway, PrincipalKyle Halpin, Director of Bands 565 S Lakeview

Attendance is crucial to the success and progress of the group. Assignments will include homework and in-class assignments. Playing quizzes/tests will be announced in advance to students in order to prepare. Students must attend all concert performances. These performances will be included

in each student’s grade as a summative assessment. The performance schedule is provided below.

ConductBand classes tend to be significantly larger than in other subject area classes. In order to maintain high musical and education standards, there is a high standard of conduct that MUST be maintained. Parents and students invest a lot of time and money to this program, and we must maintain a proper etiquette when in class/rehearsal/performances. It is often necessary to hear students play individually or in small groups during a normal class. It is essential that students understand the importance of being quiet and attentive when they are not playing. Listening to another student is just as important as playing well. Students must demonstrate proper conduct to remain a part of the program.

Students that display good behavior get stickers. Good behavior stickers are earned through answering questions in class, setting up quickly and quietly, and practicing their instrument before class starts. Students can also use these stickers to move up into advanced band, which is demonstrated by earning stickers, and the grade/success in the beginning band/intermediate band set-up.

In regards to consequences, I operate on a three strikes policy. These strikes are earned for disruptive and poor behavior. The first strike is a warning. The second strike is loss of a privilege and a call home to the student’s parents/guardians. A third strike will result in loss of privileges, an alternative assignment, and trip to the office, if the behavior displayed warrants it.

Page 8: Ivy Hawn Charter School Of The Arts€¦ · Web viewIvy Hawn Charter School Of the Arts Band Handbook 2018-2019 Mrs. Kelly Conway, PrincipalKyle Halpin, Director of Bands 565 S Lakeview

Is a student cannot control their behavior, and is a continuous problem, removal from the program will be considered.

Private LessonsAlthough the director will work with all students on an individual basis, the value of private lessons cannot be overstated. Private lessons are not required to be a part of the band. However, it is generally helpful for French horn players, double-reed players, and percussionists. Band class is essentially ensemble practice, but with private study, students can progress individually at a faster rate. If you are interested in your child taking private lessons, see the “Approved private teacher list” available from your director.

The following guidelines should be applied when seeking out a private teacher. The best private teachers:

Specialize in ONE OR TWO instruments ONLY Play their instruments for their students during the lesson Set high standards of performance for their students. Help students choose music for Solo and Ensemble Festival and help to

prepare them for the festival Prepare students for All-State/All-County Auditions Insist students learn their scales Refuse to teach students that do not practice or come to lessons unprepared.

Attendance PolicyBand is a co-curricular activity. This means that a portion of the student’s grade comes from after school activities (Rehearsals, concerts, parades, etc). Performances are essential to the success of a band program, and this program is no different. Imagine that a starting running back does not show up to a game. The same is effected in the groups performances. Performances hold the same weight as exam grades. Absences from performances or rehearsals must be approved by the director in advance. I ask for three weeks notice for any big performance (concerts, festival, parade, etc.) and two days for an after-school rehearsal. Attendance at these after school rehearsals and performances is a

Page 9: Ivy Hawn Charter School Of The Arts€¦ · Web viewIvy Hawn Charter School Of the Arts Band Handbook 2018-2019 Mrs. Kelly Conway, PrincipalKyle Halpin, Director of Bands 565 S Lakeview

REQUIREMENT. I am flexible with accommodating students, and every effort will be made on a case by case basis.

All performances are mandatory, and there are very few – if any – excuses for missing a performance. Every member is vital to the total team effort, and absences will affect the person missing, but also those around him or her.

Instrument Storage Room

Each student has full access to put his or her instrument in the instrument storage room. This room is for instruments only. The room is not big enough to have your backpacks and school supplies. If a student is caught messing with another students’ instrument or equipment that does not belong to them, they will lose the privilege to use the room.

Instruments

While some instruments are available from the school for students to use, it is financially impossible for the school to provide instruments for every student. Members are expected to acquire their own instrument whenever possible, either by purchase or lease/rent-to-own.

High quality instruments are a must. Avoid websites such as ebay and inexpensive brand instruments from Asia/stores like Wal-Mart. They are impossible to play in-tune, and frequently have issues that will cost more to fix the instrument than what it was originally worth. A used, high-quality instrument is significantly better than a poorly manufactured brand new one. If you require assistance on getting an instrument, talk to the director, and I will be willing to consult you on the purchase of an instrument.

When instruments are not at home or being used in class, they are to be stored in the instrument storage room.

Performance/Field Trip Policies

A student’s participation in a band field trip or performance is contingent upon that student meeting criteria established by the director. Students will be given reasonable chance to fulfill these requirements in the time preceding each event. This criteria may include:

Minimum GPA requirements Fulfilling financial responsibilities Demonstration of acceptable behavior Past concert or class participation Class assignments completed Turning in of requested materials, equipment, or uniforms.

Students who choose not to abide by the “Code of Conduct” at a concert or other band event on/off campus may be asked not to participate, receive a discipline referral, and lose a portion of their grade for the given event.

Music Performance Assessment

The Florida Bandmaster’s Association (F.B.A.) sponsors the District Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessments or M.P.A., and the District Concert Band Music Performance Assessments Adjudicators, approved by F.B.A., rate the performance of bands at Concert M.P.A., and of soloists and small ensembles at Solo and ensemble M.P.A. Each adjudicator uses an evaluation form, which is made available to the director and students who participate. Ratings range from I (Superior) to V (Poor). Students who achieve a Superior rating receive a medal to wear on their uniform. All music performed must be from the F.B.A. Music List. Students wishing to perform at Solo and Ensemble M.P.A. should see the director for help in choosing music of an appropriate level. Music on the F.B.A. List is graded 1 to 6 (very easy to very difficult). Soloists must have a piano accompanist. Florida Bandmaster’s Association fees for solo and ensemble, all-county, and all-state, will be set later this year by the F.B.A. Students who choose to participate in any of these events are responsible for paying their own fees and must purchase their own music from the F.B.A. approved list. Festival dates are made available early in the year.

District Concert Band MPA is a mandatory event involving only the Symphonic Band (Period 2 and 5)

E-MailE-mail is the most effective way of contacting myself, the director to ask questions, get information, or to voice potential concerns. I am not always available to answer the phone during the school day, but e-mails can be answered at times that a phone call would not be appropriate. My email is [email protected]

I will be utilizing my email to send you updates on what we will be doing in the week, upcoming rehearsals, concerts, to keep you up to date. I will also be on Remind, and you will be able to access it the first week of school.
