In just the recent past, “Specialty Gases,” to the Independent Gas and Welding Distributor, were considered mysterious and novel. They were to be purchased from and sold as directed by the major gas companies. Independents, such as Weldstar, regarded these gases as too exotic. The common attitude was “we can never compete with our supplier,” and that mindset persisted for many years.

As industry consolidation by major gas players impacted the supply chain of the independent distributor and created a situation where the independents found themselves competing with their specialty gas supplier at the end user, the need for the independent distributor to re-examine its offerings became clear.

The IWDC (Independent Welding Distributors Cooperative) adapted to these changes with a program called PurityPlus® Specialty Gases, a national brand and network of sophisticated, independently owned specialty gas producers. The IWDC, headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, serves 146 independent gas and welding gas distributors in the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Having been a distributor for many specialty gas manufacturers, we at Weldstar recognized the need for better service and quality control. The ability to do this at a local level and within our National PurityPlus® distribution network, results in more personal service at a competitive price. Weldstar is just one of 32 PurityPlus® Specialty Gas Producers who are able to fill gases in-house.

Weldstar-PurityPlus® operates under one manual titled PurityPlus® Specialty Gases Quality Assurance Manual: Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which is monitored by AsteRisk LLC. Our independent lab manufactures and supplies a variety of specialty gases ranging from UHP products to protocols, medical devices, multi-gas mixtures, and other related specialty gases. The PurityPlus® quality assurance program assures that Weldstar’s laboratories are producing a uniform and consistent product that conforms to all the product specifications required by sophisticated customers.

Weldstar-PurityPlus® has earned a reputation of excellence for our service and technical abilities. The ability to have local expertise, local service, and local record keeping will enhance the reputation of excellence which Weldstar-PurityPlus® continually strives to improve. Training has become a major focus for PurityPlus®, and programs have been developed to train Weldstar personnel at each step of the supply chain – from the person who received the phone inquiry, to the sales representative, to the operations manager. Weldstar also continually works to upgrade our laboratory and blending equipment as well as appointing highly skilled and technically competent people to run our lab.

Weldstar-PurityPlus® markets specialty gases to a diverse group of industries including pharmaceutical refinery, shipyard, petroleum, and environmental monitoring, and research institutions.
