Rev. Gregor Gorsic, Pastor (815) 886-4165 ext. 317

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! Hallelujah! The Lord is risen from the dead!!! Hallelujah! In awe and wonder, we hear the words Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany after her brother Lazarus had died and was buried four days in the tomb, “I am the resurrec-tion and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (Jn 11, 25-26). These words of Jesus beautifully displayed in a mosaic are highlighted above the main altar of the Church of St. Lazarus in the village of Bethany (see picture to the right): I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE. This present Catholic church, with mosaics depicting the events that occurred here, was built in 1954. Architect Antonio Barluzzi contrasted the sadness of death with the joy of resurrection by designing a crypt-like, windowless church, into which light floods from the large oculus in its dome. The little village of Bethany, on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives about 3 miles from Jerusalem, was a favourite place of rest and refuge for Jesus (the original village was probably higher up the hill to the west of the tomb of Lazarus). Here Jesus knew the intimacy and friendship of his friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Many pilgrims on their way to Jerusalem would find this Bethany a place of rest and comfort, especially those who were sick and travelling to Jerusalem for prayers and healing. And here, in the cemetery just below the village not far from the current day Catholic Church, Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. At right is a picture of the entrance to the tomb, and below it, the stairs that lead to the tomb’s vestibule, with the burial chamber to the lower right. And below that is a picture of one of the pilgrims on our Holy Land Pilgrimage entering the burial chamber this past February. Today’s pilgrims enter from the street down a flight of 24 well-worn and uneven steps to a vestibule. Three more steps lead to the burial chamber, little more than six feet long. Tradition says Jesus stood in the vestibule to call Lazarus from the grave. When Lazarus was dying, as John’s Gospel (11:1-44) recounts, his sisters sent for Jesus. But Jesus delayed his arrival until four days after Lazarus had been buried, “so that the Son of God may be glorified”. Arriving at the tomb, Jesus called: “LAZARUS, COME OUT!” To the amazement of mourners who had witnessed the burial, the dead man walked out. This miracle confirmed the determination of the religious leaders in Jerusalem to have Jesus put to death. A week before the crucifixion, at dinner in the house of Simon the Leper in Bethany, Lazarus’ and Martha’s sister Mary took a jar of expensive ointment and poured it over Christ’s feet — an act he saw as the anointing of his body for burial. (John 12:1-8). What an amazing grace to be at the place Jesus proclaimed: “Lazarus, come out!” Of course, Lazarus was brought back to this life, not the resurrected life, but what a powerful witness he was to the truth that Jesus is the resurrection and the life! Pilgrims have been drawn to this place of Lazarus’ resurrection because they see how it prefigured the resurrection of Christ, and heralded their own return from the grave. Since 2005, Bethany, in the West Bank, has been cut off from Jerusalem by Israel’s separation wall. So what used to be a 10-minute drive from the Mount of Olives to Bethany now requires a lengthy detour. So much has changed since Jesus walked that part of the world! But one thing certainly has not — He still is the RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE, and He still lives calling us to a new life with Him already here and now, and also with Him forever on the last day. Life is a pilgrimage filled with lengthy detours. But through them all, Jesus calls us to new life. Hallelujah! The Lord is risen as He promised! He is alive! Hallelujah!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Naszym Parafianom, Przyjaciołom i Dobrodziejom składam najlepsze życzenia wielkanocne. Niech Zmartwychwstały Chrystus obdarzy każdego z Was najbardziej potrzebnymi łaskami. Niech zachowa Was w dobrym zdrowiu i napełni Wasze serca prawdziwym pokojem. Ks. Sebastian Gargol

Polish Café

Three weeks ago, we had the last session of Polish Café, which is a monthly community-building event that follows Polish Family Masses on the third Sunday of the month. One of the fruits of that event are funds that support Polish Ministry. Thanks to them, we were able to do many wonderful things for the Polish commu-nity as well as for the whole St. Andrew’s Parish Family. In the past years we were able to purchase microphone system for Polish children choir (around $1000), sponsor flowers and decorations for many occasions, support the Jesus’ Tomb project, sponsor the gift for Bishop during Coronation ceremony and support the preparation for that historic event in the life of our parish. This year we have collected $2536. Our expenses were $1022.88 (All Saints flowers $98, Flowers for OLC $14.99, Angel candlesticks $372, St. Nick for altar servers $309.85, St Nick for Children $102, Christmas decorations for OLC $41.04) and remaining balance of $1513.12 has been deposited on the Parish account and will serve the needs of Polish Community. We an-ticipate the participation in the Parish collection for the new Sacred Vessels and de-cided to contribute $610 to that collection. I would like to express my gratitude to all Café leaders, our won-derful bakers and all participants. May God bless you for everything you do for our community. Fr. Gregor, as well as myself, we hope that this event will be continued in the future and will serve our faith family. Fr. Sebastian Gargol

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Our tradition has a way of honoring age-old cus-toms, and is patient with how practices unfold in dif-ferent places. The name oftoday's feast illustrates this well. English is a Germanic language, and our word "Easter," or German "Oester," points back to the pagan goddess Eoestre, the star of the vernal equinox feast. The Greek title "Pasch" reaches back in a more helpful manner to the Hebrew "Pesach," or "Passover." "Paschal Triduum" may be slow to re-place "Easter" in our vocabulary, but it is clearer about the mystery we celebrate today, the culmination of three days laden with mystery and meaning.

You can hear the older term, and the resistance to English influence, in the Irish "Casca" and Scot-tish "Pask." Romance languages stay close to the deep paschal tradition, with the French "Paques," Spanish "Pascua" and Italian "Pasqua." Memories of our pagan past with "Oester" will not soon fade away: even Japanese Christians are under her spell, for today's feast is called" I-suta." Swahili, a young language, takes the more traditional route with "Pasaka." Each language yields a rich insight into the feast. Spanish includes a sense that today is a "big Sunday" by adding the designation "Pascua" to the greatest feasts, such as "Pascua de la Nativi-dad" (Christmas). Once Christ is risen, every step oflife's journey is illuminated by the light of the Pasch! - Rev. James Field Copyright© J. S. Paluch Co.

CROSS OF WISHES

On the entrance wall of church and the East entrance Parish Hall wall, you will notice large brown crosses.

On the cross are smaller purple crosses with items that our dedicated parish staff wish for. If you can, please take a purple cross, put your name and phone number on the back,

and drop it in the basket, or return it to a staff mem-ber or the Parish Office. We will contact you about your donation. If you cannot fulfill an entire wish, any donation towards the item is appreciated.

Look upon our brothers and sisters who are ill, in the midst of illness and pain, may they be united with Christ, who heals both body and soul; may they know the consolation promised to those who suffer and be fully restored to wellness and whole-ness. We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED, Chris Petrone

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners

Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING RECONCILIATION Reconciliation is available each Saturday afternoon, Wednesday evening 5:30-7:00pm, through seasonal communal services, and by appointment.

ANOINTING Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain.
