Prior to establishing J. Ennis Fabrics, James C. Ennis spent 22 years with LaFrance textiles. In 1958, he was transferred to Edmonton as their Western Canadian Regional Manager. During that time he learned all about textiles and the needs of his customers.

On June 1, 1972, James and Lois Ennis opened their original warehouse, a 2,500 square foot bay, in Edmonton and distributed fabrics and supplies in Northern Alberta.

Since that time, thanks to the continued support of our valued customers, J. Ennis Fabrics has experienced steady growth. Today, over 9,000 products are distributed throughout North America from four extensive, full service distribution centres in Toronto, Edmonton, Vancouver and Indianapolis, including a wholly owned 40,000 square foot quality control and consolidation warehouse in China capable of domestic Asian trading.

Furthermore, we offer drapery products that pass fire retardancy testing NFPA 701, which ensures our fabrics can be used in the domestic and hospitality settings.

Getting StartedGeneral Guidelines

The placement and type of drapery hardware depends on the look you wish to create. Rod placement and type determines the width and length of the draperies needed. The information presented below are only general guidelines. Consult your workroom, installer, sales representative, instruction sheets, or fact sheets for specific information.

The amount of space required to completely draw open the drapery to clear the glass without obstructing the view. A general rule is to add ⅓ of window width to allow for stackback.

The part of a pair of draperies which rides the master carrier and overlaps in the center when draperies are drawn. A general rule is to allow 2½–3½" per drapery panel on a two-way draw traverse rod. Overlap allowance not needed for one-way draw or shirred pocket installation. Consult workroom for specific guidelines.

returnsThe amount of drapery that covers the distance from the face of the rod to the wall. A general rule is to add ½" to projection to avoid fabric binding.

fullness

Fullness defines the amount of fabric that is pleated or shirred for a given drapery finished width. Treatment fullness can be expressed as a percentage (e.g. 100%), or a ratio (e.g. 2:1). Fabric weight and personal preference determine fullness. Consult workroom for specific guidelines.

ProjeCtion Distance from the wall to the front of the rod.

ClearanCe Distance from the wall to the back side of the rod.

Bracket GuideBracket Spacing—Rod Width

The number of brackets and center supports used is directly related to the type of rod used, the width of the rod, and stackback requirements.

Stackback

To allow as much light as possible and give an unobstructed view, draperies ordinarily stack outside the glass area of the window. Add the stackback to the glass width to get the rod width.

The amount of stacking space needed will vary depending on the thickness of the fabrics being used, and the fullness at which they are sold. The following formula should be used only as a guideline.

To determine your rod bracket to bracket measurement that allows the drapery to stack off the window:

1. Measure the width of the areas to be cleared.

2. Multiply that number by 1.5.

3. The resulting number is your new rod bracket to bracket. Add the appropriate overlaps and returns and overlap for your finished width.

Example:

Area to be cleared is 72".

Multiply 72 by 1.5 = 108. This is your rod width to stack the draperies off the window.

Add returns and overlap for your finished width.

Clearance:

Allow for both side clearance and front clearance when installing over another treatment. This allows for operation of the undertreatment.

Pole Set Mounting

Pole sets or wood poles typically extend beyond the window frame 6–18". Place center supports equidistant between end brackets.

Bracket Height—Drapery Length

Brackets are typically mounted so that the top of the draperies are 4" above the glass. Allow ¼–⅝" for clearing window sill or floor. The relationship between the drapery length and the installed rod height depends on the type and size of the rod. Decorative traverse rods and wood poles are designed so that the drapery heading hangs below the rod.

Top Screw Position—Bracket Allowance

Knowing the drapery length (and bottom clearance) and the bracket allowance makes it easy to determine where to mount the brackets to get the proper rod height. The bracket allowance is the distance from the top screw of the bracket to the drapery heading.

The Perfect PleatCreates even pleats along the length of the curtain when using grommets (p.46–48). A smooth action with virtually zero contact on the pole. Available in three finishes and ideal for medium to heavier-weight curtains.

How It WorksA specially designed pole profile allows eyelet gliders to smoothly run along the pole while secured together by a length of beaded cord within the poles profile. The gliders are spaced equally ensuring a perfect uniform pleat when drawn along the pole.

Joining Two Poles TogetherUsing a pole connector, longer lengths of pole can be achieved. Ensure there is a support centrally located at the joint.

Styleline Track ConnectorLonger length tracks can be achieved by using this strong track connector to join two tracks together. Slide the connector into the top slot of both track pieces to join and then secure with the screws provided. Available in sterling finish only.

Also use to connect track to bracket. Inserts into the top channel of the track for a discrete finish.

Cutting the trackSingle track lengths Use a hacksaw to trim the track at one end to the required length.

Double track lengths Use a hacksaw to trim an equal amount from one end of both the tracks to give the required length. Place the uncut ends to the centre where the track connector and join will be made.

Fineline™ Bending Plastic InsertsA bending aid to be used in pairs. Simply slips into the track and allows it to keep its profile while being bent. Remove afterwards. White only.

Fineline™ Bending ToolMakes the bending of the track easier and more precise, with two radiuses and marked for specific angles. Made from aluminum for strength. Silver finish.

Bending the TrackThe track can be easily bent by hand. Insert the bending inserts and make a series of small bends while sliding the track around your knee, gradually making the correct bend. For ease there is also a bending tool available as shown.

Did you know?Although it is more common to find decorative nails acting as visual accents on drapes and furniture, their usage is surprisingly diverse. J. Ennis Fabrics Ltd. maintains the highest standards possible in the textiles and supplies we present to our customers. The following are the standards we use for shipping to our customers. These standards are based on the “Woven Upholstery Fabric Standards and Guidelines (2nd Edition)” and the Chemical Fabrics and Film Association’s paper on Standard Test Methods for Chemical Coated Fabrics and Films which are sources subscribed to by most North American manufacturers. These books specify test methods, practices and minimum voluntary acceptance guidelines for various types of upholstery fabrics and standards for vinyls and coated fabrics. In no case would we supply items as first quality that could not meet these guidelines. Clearouts or seconds are of a lower standard and are priced accordingly.

A deposit of twenty dollars ($20.00) per sample and a deposit of one hundred dollars ($100.00) per complete sample book will be collected at the time a customer completes a “Sample Loan Out Sheet”. All samples are expected to be returned to our showroom within 2 weeks at which time your deposit will be returned to you. If samples are not returned within 4 weeks the deposit will be forfeited.

This refers to the acceptable number of flaws in a given cut. A maximum of one flaw per 5 yards is allowed. If the cut is equal to or under 5 yards, then the cut must be free of flaws.

A break in a roll is considered to be a flaw and the allowance given is usually ¼ to ½ yard. All orders 10 yards or less must be filled with a single piece of fabric. If this is not possible then the customer must approve shipment ahead of time. If the length of the cut is greater than 10 yards, a break is acceptable provided there is a suitable allowance. No single piece will be less than 2 flaw free yards. If more than 2 pieces are required to fill an order, the customer must approve this prior to shipping, regardless of length. In all cases of breaks in rolls this information must be noted on the stop tag as well as the packing slip.

Any time two or more pieces are used to fill an order, the goods must match. Customers will be advised if shade and dye lots cannot be matched.

Roll lengths vary. Please confirm when placing orders for full rolls.

Clearouts or seconds may contain flaws and have been priced accordingly.

Factory flaws are marked with either a red or yellow plastic “swiftach” type of marker or a length of colored thread or string in the selvedge of the material. When marked with a red tag, the flaw is considered to be a “spot” or filling (course) direction flaw. It usually will be less than ⅛ yard and is marked with the red tag for identification and numbering of flaws per roll. When a yellow flag is used, this represents a warp or wale direction flaw, and there is a flag to mark both the start and end of the flaw. In most cases a flaw of this type would not be included in your shipment, but in case of a full roll order the exact yardage between flags is deducted from the gross yardage on the roll.

Payment terms are Net 30 days from date of invoice. Shipments in Canada are F.O.B. Vancouver, Edmonton, and Toronto.

Shipments in the U.S. are F.O.B. Indianapolis.

Claims will not be honored when covers have been removed for cleaning. This warranty does not apply to fabrics treated with non-fluorocarbon finishes. If the identical fabric is not available, J. Ennis Fabrics Ltd./ J. Ennis Fabrics USA Inc. will provide an equivalent fabric.

A 1.5% service charge per month (18% per annum) will be charged on overdue accounts.

Customers must advise J.Ennis Fabrics Ltd. / USA Inc. within 90 days of a shipping date that goods are lost in shipping, and a claim is required. We cannot honor any freight claims past this point.

Reservations placed on fabric orders will be honored for 48 hours.

When placing an order please provide the following information: pattern name, color number, and shipping instructions.

If exact color match is required, please request a cutting of present stock, or send a cutting to be matched. If matching a previous order, please quote the order number. If this is unavailable, send a cutting of the fabric for matching. Please note that dye lots may vary.

Back ordered items will be shipped as soon as available unless otherwise advised by customer.

Each cut of fabric is accompanied by a tag describing the item ordered and the yardage shipped. These tags also contain information regarding flaws, the date and time of the order, the packing slip number, etc. Please read these tags thoroughly. Whenever the Quantity Ordered and the Quantity Shipped differ, there will be a mark denoting whether the cause was a flaw, an allowance or a given fabric situation.

Indicates that there was a small amount of yardage left on the roll and was forwarded to the customer at no charge.

Indicates that there were imperfections within the yardage (as outlined in Quality Control Standards), therefore extra fabric has been allowed for them.

Indicates that you have been allowed extra fabric for a latent warp direction flaw.

Will also help to identify the goods. Be sure to check these before cutting the material. The cutting of a fabric indicates acceptance. Fabric may not be returned for credit once it has been cut or marked. As well, any supply item sold in pre-packaged lots will not be accepted in less than complete lots.

In order to process your credits more efficiently, we are instituting the following policy. To process the credit more quickly, customers are now required to request a Return Authorization Number (RA) for all returns to our office. This will enable credits status inquiries to be handled more efficiently by our Call Centre Agents, and will help us identify lost or mislabeled returns. Should an RA number not be received it will cause the process of the credit to be delayed, or even refused. A 15% restocking charge (plus freight it applicable) will be charged on all returned goods.

The following restrictions will apply to returned goods:

1. Returns will not be accepted on goods older than 90 days from date of purchase.

2. Returns will not be accepted after fabric has been cut.

3. No returns accepted on fabric cuts under 5 yds.

4. Returns goods must be packaged properly. If further damage occurs from inadequate packaging further charges would apply.

5. Adhesives are not accepted after 30 days because of shelf life.

6. Mfg warranties apply to the repair of all tools

The exception to the above occurs when it is determined the reason for the return is an error on the part of J. Ennis Fabrics. In this case no restocking or freight charges would apply.

Warranty periods vary by manufacturer and product. If you have a question or concern regarding the warranty on a purchase or an existing product in use, please contact your sales representative or our call centre. All warranty claims are handled on an individual basis. To initiate a claim, contact your sales representative to get a claims form filled out and submitted. Due to the wide range of manufacturers and suppliers there is no standard for claims.
