We were therefore buried with Him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. Romans 6:4

After bad words
and temper have passed,
you say the other words:
“I am sorry.”
We have known each other
too long;
we have become family.
In a silence of closure
your words speak
not only for ourselves,
but carry their meaning
for all the world.

Every year I put out a list of recommended reading for the summer. This past year my
health has made reading difficult, which, unfortunately, means that I haven’t spent as
much time as I would like pursuing one of my favorite hobbies. While I have been
feeling much better lately (and have started being able to read again), I just haven’t read
enough to compile a list for you. So this year I asked Wally to fill in for me. Below is
his proposed reading list. ~ Fr. Mike
Over the past twelve months I have read some wonderfully entertaining and thought provoking books that I’d like
to share.
Thought Provoking –
The Book That Made Your World; How the Bible Created the Soul of Western Civilization. The title is descriptive
in itself. The author, Vishal Mangalwadi, sees western civilization forsaking its Christian roots and so reminds us
of all the blessings it has enjoyed because of that faith. These blessings are not shared in other parts of the world
because they worship created gods and not truth.
Two other books along the same line are, How Christianity Changed the World by Alvin Schmidt, and The
Victory of Reason; How Christianity Led to Freedom, Capitalism, and Western Success by Rodney Stark.
Worldviews are not inconsequential. The Christian faith is unique in that it gives dignity to the human being that
other faiths do not. This dignity requires that we extend mercy, forgiveness, love and also justice as our Creator
extends to us. The Christian faith worships a personal God of order who placed us in a creation to be amazed at,
to care for and to explore. From all of these blessings, the Christian faith alone has raised mankind up from his
sinful nature and has given meaning and purpose to life with all the blessings that flow from a worldview that
corresponds to reality.
Another book from an opposite approach is The Marketing of Evil; How Radicals, Elitist, and Pseudo-Experts
Sell Us Corruption Disguised as Freedom by David Kupelian. The previous books looked at the blessings that
our faith has bestowed on mankind. This book describes the systematic approach taken by those who would
destroy and completely reverse some of the moral values our faith prescribes. This corruption of our Christian
values in not an accident; it has been in planning for years and is now coming to fruition and has taken too many
of us by surprise.
Stephen Meyer in his book, Darwin’s Doubt; The Explosive Origin of Animal Life and The Case for Intelligent
Design shows that opposed to what Darwin expected the fossil record does not reveal a progressive evolution of
animal life. Instead about 500 million years ago there was an explosion in the diversity of animal life called the
Cambrian Explosion. Contrary to what was expected, the pre-Cambrian strata of the earth does not show
transitional forms that have evolved into the diversity of life that we see today.
Darwin used a tree to depict his evolutionary theory. The base of the tree stood for the first life or species. As
evolution occurred, according to Darwin, more species developed and diversified which were represented in the
branches of the tree. As diversification continued to evolve more branches were shown in Darwin’s model.

Because Darwin’s theory has species evolving into other species, some common elements would be carried into
later species even as diversification continued. As evolution continued, however, these common elements became
less and less until the remaining common element by which species could be grouped was in their common body
plan.
The problem is, as Stephen Meyer, shows is that this is not what the fossil record shows. The fossil record shows
that all the major animal body plans can into existence during the Cambrian Explosion, which occurred in a
relatively short geologically time period. The fossil record does not validate Darwin’s theory represented by the
Tree of Life in which evolution brought about greater and greater diversification. Instead the fossil record shows
diversification from the outset.
The book was a fascinating read but at times delved into a depth of scientific discussion that was more than I
needed or could absorb. Nonetheless, it is important to read, or at least be aware of, because the politically correct
gatekeepers of information will never reveal that their foundational theory has collapsed.
I Don’t Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist written by Norman Geisler and Frank Turek is an excellent book that
takes every argument offered in defense of atheism and dismantles it. It is a book that also re-grounds the
Christian in truth. This book is an important book especially for our youth who are, or will be, assaulted by
deception.
Answering Islam; The Crescent in Light of the Cross by Norman Geisler and Abdul Saleeb tells the history of
Islam; explains its beliefs and in comparison provides a positive defense of the Christina faith.
Autobiography/Biography –
An especially readable and revealing book on Islam is Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus; A Devout Muslim
Encounters Christianity by Nabeel Qureshi. Nabeel tells of his life growing up in Islam, his encounter with a
Christian in college and his journey from assurance to doubt, to confusion, to terror and finally to truth. I cannot
recommend this more highly. We are in an age when everything Christian is trashed and everything Muslim
exalted. In this time in our culture, this book needs to be read.
Laura Hillenbrand has written the most captivating biography I have read. In her book Unbroken; A World War
11 Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption she tells story of Louie Zamperini who was shot down in World
War 11, survived at sea only to be captured and tortured by the Japanese. But this is far more than an incredible
story of survival; it is a story of redemption beyond what most of us could ever imagine.
Fiction -
With space limited, I could not end without recommending my favorite Christian fiction author, Randy Singer. If
you ever read and liked John Grisham, you should really like Randy Singer. His books captivate the reader from
the first page; always leaving you surprised by what happens next and completely unsuspecting of the ending. Of
all his books one was written with a female audience in mind, Self-Incrimination. So, ladies, this particular book
of his may be one that is just for you. All of his books are listed in Amazon or on his web page. In addition to his
fiction writings he also authored The Cross Examination of Jesus Christ; an excellent read.
It just occurred to me that this Joyous News will go out right after Memorial weekend and a month before the 4th
of July, so I wanted to add one more book.
"It is said that America is not a Christian nation and that may now be true but the statement is deceptive in that it
begs the question if it ever was. There are numerous books written on America's Christian heritage but because
of space I'll only mention one. America’s God and Country by William J. Federer. Federer's book is an
encyclopedia of quotations attesting to the Christian heritage of this country and the existence of God; quotations
from founding fathers, presidents, inventors, military and women leaders, scientists, and many more."
Blessings, Wally

First of all, I must thank everyone who made our 10th Anniversary Celebration a success. Ellie did a fantastic job with the food. We were able to enjoy the space of Blanz Hall with a nice meal with several members and guests. The praise and worship service following was made extra special by the talented Watton family singing many of the songs.
Thanks as well to Ferd for working with them and using his musical talents as well. As always, we need to thank God for showing us how truly blessed we are.
I am fairly sure that while I am writing this article for Joyous News, Father Mike is likely preparing some type of report on his recent attendance at Synod. This gathering and our visits from the Bishop are part of our connection to the larger body of Christ's Church.
From the very first ideas of starting a new church it was always important to those at work on it's creation that we must be connected to the Anglican Communion and the Archbishop of Canterbury. Along with finding a building, preachers, committee leaders, musicians and all the obvious things a church needs, we had to find a way to make us an Anglican church. We studied and contacted a few different ways of doing this and it was decided that we would join the Anglican Mission in America. AMIA had actually started in 2000 when the Archbishops of Rwanda and Southeast Asia consecrated two Americans as bishops to serve as missionaries to the United States. (A reverse of how we have historically looked at missionaries, yet something truly needed in today's world.) The representative from AMIA who came to talk our church leaders was David Linka, who was then a deacon with the Anglican Mission. He made visits to many churches like ours that were starting up across the country. At that time, we felt that AMIA was the most established link for us to be Anglican and not Episcopalian, thus New Life was one of many new churches in the Anglican Mission in America.
In July of 2006, Doc Loomis wrote an interesting article for the AMIA newsletter about Bishop Thadeus Barnum's travels to visit five of the new churches in Ohio and Michigan. This article appearing in the national AMIA newsletter and told of their visit to little Petoskey and New Life Anglican. Bishop Barnum lived in Connecticut, and traveled to Chillicothe and Hudson, OH, Livonia, Flint and Petoskey MI on this journey. By the time this group got to Petoskey for a mid-week confirmation service, most of the clergy from the other churches along the way had
THE HISTORY OF
NEW LIFE ANGLICAN CHURCH BY LIZ OSTRANDER
joined the group and came along to the far reaches of Northern Michigan. I did some quick research on these churches, and found that they are all still Anglican Churches, but, four of the five are now part of the Anglican Church in North America and one of them is part of PEARUSA (Province de L’Eglise Anglicane au Rwanda ) which is a break away from AMIA. AMIA has now changed to being AM...or simply, “The Mission”.
While we and many other Anglican churches were starting up and changing, so too, were the provinces of the Anglican Communion with which we were to join to be a part of God's greater church. ACNA (Anglican Church in North America) was formed in 2008 and gave orthodox Anglican's a link to the Anglican Communion with an American Bishop, Bishop Robert Duncan. Roger Ames was of great help to us in getting New Life Anglican started. He was then leading an orthodox parish in Akron, OH and had links to Northern Michigan having been in Charlevoix for a number of years. Now he is the bishop of our Anglican Diocese of Great Lakes.
Our parish is ten years old, young for a church, yet our province and diocese are younger. This has been a time of great change for the us during the past ten years, but, we are not alone. It has been a time of change for many. Most of the churches that were represented at the Synod are new parishes...the ones that are not new, are in a new branch of the Anglican Communion. We pray each week for our clergy in the Prayers of the People. These prayers are for Robert, our Archbishop, Roger, our Bishop and Michael, our Priest. We also need to pray for the Anglican Church in North America, The Anglican Diocese of the Great Lakes, and New Life Anglican Church that we may all work together to bring Christ to the world. This is the reason that New Life Anglican was started. May God help us to achieve this goal. May he continue to work through us to spread his good news to the world.
