From the Pastor’s Desk The Most Holy Trinity Sunday

Theme:“One God in Three Persons”

Today is Holy Trinity Sunday when we profess our faith in the triune God. God the

Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. I will appeal that we moderate our reason

and intellectual acumen and try to approach this mystery of the Holy Trinity with faith.

The dogma of the Trinity is a mystery which will never be fully understood by us as

“clear and distinct.” The best approach to understand this mystery is to experience the

love that exists between the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

To approach this dogma with mere reason, is to fall victim to the temptation of intellectual

idolatry. However, this is in no way means that we simply repeat past statements about the

Trinity in an uncritical or uncaring way. We need to bring relevant modern insights to bear

on our faith which always seeks understanding. However, perhaps we should center our

attention more on the experiential aspects of the Trinity, as I said earlier, on the love that

exists between them. Such an approach would be more faithful to the witness of the Bible

and our own spirit. continued on page 3

Hoy es el domingo de la Santísima Trinidad cuando profesamos nuestra fe en el Dios

trino. Dios el Padre, Dios el Hijo y Dios el Espíritu Santo. Pediré que moderemos nuestra

razón y perspicacia intelectual y trataremos de abordar este misterio de la Santísima

Trinidad con fe. El dogma de la Trinidad es un misterio que nunca entenderemos como

“claro y distinto.” El mejor enfoque para entender este misterio es experimentar el amor

que existe entre el Padre, el Hijo y el Espíritu Santo.

Abordar este dogma con una simple razón, es ser víctima de la tentación de la idolatría

intelectual. Sin embargo, esto no significa de ninguna manera que simplemente repetimos

Nuestras tres lecturas de hoy de las Escrituras resaltan tres

aspectos de Dios que corresponden a tres diferencias en la forma

en que vivimos. El libro de Proverbios destaca la creatividad

amorosa de Dios. Desde el caos de “lo primordial,” Dios pone

orden; y "se deleita en los hijos de los hombres.” El amor creativo

de Dios es una invitación para que seamos creativos y amorosos en

nuestra vida diaria. Con demasiada frecuencia nos sentimos

atrapados en relaciones y trabajos o nuestras vocaciones. Porque

no “trabajamos en el amor creative.” En palabras de Thomas

Edison, “¡El genio es 1% de inspiración y 99% de transpiración!”

Caemos en rutinas y patrones que matan al espíritu y eliminan la

alegría de nuestras labores diarias. Creer que Dios es un creador

amoroso significa que también debemos amar y ser creativos en

nuestra vida diaria. “Mi padre todavía está en el trabajo y por lo

tanto yo también trabajo.” (Jn. 5:17).

Nuestra lectura de Romanos presenta la obra reconciliadora de

Jesucristo. Ahora estamos en paz con Dios a través de la muerte y

resurrección de Jesús. Ahora podemos tener el coraje de enfrentar

nuestras limitaciones y aceptar nuestra aceptación. Ya no tenemos

que llevar máscaras de la perfección. Nos abrimos a Dios tal como

somos. Al hacerlo, podemos “jactarnos de nuestra esperanza por la

gloria de Dios.” Creer realmente que Jesús hizo esto por nosotros

significa que actuamos para dar evidencia de que estamos “en paz

con Dios a través de nuestro Señor Jesucristo.” Nos dirigimos a

Dios para la curación. Somos capaces de consolarnos y apoyarnos

unos a otros en la aflicción. Somos capaces de soportar y ayudar a

otros a permanecer fieles.

También proclamamos que Dios es Espíritu. El evangelio de Juan

indica que Jesús enviará el Espíritu de verdad. La obra del espíritu

es anunciar la verdad recibida del Padre. Esta verdad se refiere a

quién es Jesús: el enviado por el Padre para revelar su nombre

como amor. Nuevamente, si creemos que Dios es el Espíritu de

verdad, vivimos de tal manera que damos evidencia de que Dios es

amor y Jesús es la Palabra hecha carne. Nos amamos unos a otros

en formas que son dadoras de vida y llenas del Espíritu.

El dogma de la Trinidad es más que simples palabras de ideas. La

Trinidad, si realmente se cree, hace una diferencia real en la forma

en que vivimos. Una cosa es cierta: es más fácil jugar con palabras

e ideas. No tenemos que cambiar o lavar nuestro dogma. Sin

embargo, creer realmente que Dios es Padre, Hijo y Espíritu

significa que debemos amar creativamente, vivir en paz a través de

la cruz de Cristo. No es fácil, pero nunca aburrido.

Our three readings today from scripture highlights three

aspects of God which corresponds to three differences in

the way we live. The book of Proverbs highlights the loving

creativity of God. From the chaos of “the primordial”, God

brings order; and “found delight in the sons of men.” God’s

creative love is an invitation for us to be creative and loving

in our daily lives. Too often we feel trapped in relationships

and jobs or our vocations. Because we do not “work at

creative love.” In the words of Thomas Edison, “Genius is

1% inspiration, and 99% perspiration!” We fall into ruts and

patterns which kill the spirit and remove the joy from our

daily labors. To believe that God is a loving creator means

that we also are to love and be creative in our daily lives.

“My Father is still at work and therefore I work as well.”

(Jn. 5:17).

Our reading from Romans presents the reconciling work of

Jesus Christ. We are now at peace with God through the

death and resurrection of Jesus. We now can have the

courage to face our limitations and accept our acceptance.

We no longer have to wear masks of perfection. We open

ourselves to God as we are. In so doing, we can “boast of

our hope for the glory of God.” To really believe that Jesus

did this for us means that we act so as to give evidence that

we are “at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

We turn to God for healing. We are able to comfort and

support one another in affliction. We are able to endure and

help others to remain faithful.

We also proclaim that God is Spirit. The gospel of John

indicates that Jesus will send the Spirit of truth. The work

of the spirit is to announce the truth received from the

Father. This truth concerns who Jesus is—the One sent by

the Father to reveal his name as love. Again, if we believe

that God is the Spirit of truth, we live in such a way that

we give evidence to the truth that God is love and Jesus is

the Word made flesh. We love one another in ways that are

life-giving and Spirit-filled.

The dogma of the Trinity is more than mere words of ideas.

The Trinity, if really believed, makes a real difference in the

way we live. One thing is certain—it is easier to play with

words and ideas. We don’t have to change or wash our

dogma. However, to really believe that God is Father, Son

and Spirit means we must love creatively, live at peace

through the cross of Christ. Not easy—but never boring.
