Report from 59th SPSC meeting - Closed Session (1/3)

1.      Approval of the minutes of the 58th meeting 2.      Matters arising

3.      Report on the 159th meeting of the Research Board- Exchange of letters between L. Nemenov (DIRAC) and DG for an extension of DIRAC in 2003.- Another letter (02/09/2002) ,sent to Research Board distributed to SPSC members

4.      Status Report on the SPS- Status of CNGS work by P. Grafstroem : should be ready by mid 2006- What would be the consequences of a lower energy ? Answer at next meeting- Good efficiency and intensity in SPS this year.- Congratulations from SPSC.

5.      Status Report on the PS- East Area back to 24 GeV/c, but frequent power supply trips.- AD operation on piquet regime from 09/09.- Intensities as required by users.- Congratulations from SPSC.

6.      Status Report on the PS and SPS experiments- DIRAC lost 12 % of their data taking due to the transformer problem. - Long and successful proton run of NA49.- COMPASS had a difficult start. Now data taking is very efficient. - NA60 : high energy ion run cancelled because detector not ready.- NA48 has a 1 week extension (granted by DG) to compensate for the losses at the start.

Report from 59th SPSC meeting - Closed Session (2/3)

7.      ICARUS Proposal SPSC 2002-027/P323: V. Kekelidze- Will start data taking in 2003, with the T600 module tested in Pavia.- T3000 should be operational in 2006. Will use the CNGS beam.- Vast programme on p+ decay, atmospheric and solar neutrinos, …- SPSC recommends ICARUS for approval in consultation with the Gran Sasso Scientific Committee.- SPSC asks for detailed schedule and expects more information on financial and manpower resources.

- Congratulations from SPSC.

8.      Status Report on OPERA: S. Dalla Torre, R. Forty- Slight changes in detector lay-out (Changeable Sheet Detector will speed up scanning).- Withdrawal of CERN required some reallocation of responsibilities. - Production of emulsion and their life time dictate a stringent adherence to schedule.- SPSC expressed its worries about the tight schedule for the Brick Assembly Machine- SPSC supports the quest for higer beam intensity.- Congratulations from SPSC.

9.      Status Report of NA59: D.Websdale- Written report requested.- Will be discussed at next meeting.

10.    Status of NA60 (SPSC 2002-025/M-690): I. Brock- Explanations on the problems encountered in the production of the pixel detector.- SPSC regrets the cancellation of the high energy ion run due to delay in the pixel detectors.- SPSC hopes that the detector will be complete for the run in 2003.

Report from 59th SPSC meeting - Closed Session (3/3)

11.    SPS and PS schedules- Report on the schedule modifications this year :

Cancellation of high energy ion run and 10 more days to low energy run.1 more p+ week allocated to NA48.

- Draft 2003 schedule presented :PS start 05/05 and 171 days of physics.SPS starts 19/05 with 105 days of physics & 7 days of "25 ns" operation (date to be discussed).Indium run from 17/09 to 26/10.

12.     A.O.B.       * Request for proton irradiation by C.A.Londos: J-P. Riunaud

- There is no irradiation facility at CERN providing 10 MeV protons.- Study made by C. Hill and K. Schindl to use beam from Linac 2 :

More than a week would be required at the and of the year, plus manpower.- Conclusions : Request should be adressed to another accelerator.

* Letter of Intent (SPSC 2002-028/I-225) from M. Holzscheiter et al.: Relative Biological Effectiveness and Peripheral Damage of Antiproton Annihilation. - Request to use the AD DEM line to sudy biological effects of p- anihilation.- A few hours / year before end 2004; 300 MeV/c extraction.- SPSC asks for a cost estimate of DEM installation (to be presented at november meeting).- A full proposal may then be requested to Holzscheiter et al.
