DESCRIPTION

Présentation de Juliane Sauer (Eurosearch Office Switzerland) présentée lors du colloque infoclio.ch à Berne, le 16 septembre 2010. This presentation will give an overview on the basic features of European Research Infrastructures as part of the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Union for the funding of research, FP7. The talk will give insight in the importance and structure of Research Infrastructures. Funding mechanisms and possibilities for (Swiss) researchers to gain access to the infrastructures, in particular for the Social Sciences and Humanities, will be covered as well.

The Commissions‘ Definition…

The term “research infrastructures” refers to Facilities

Resourcesand Related Services that are used by the scientific community to conduct top-level research in their respective fields.

3fold Structure I3 (and e-infrastructures)

Joint Research Activities- E.g. integration of installations and infrastructures into virtual facilities, innovative solutions for data collection, management and annotation;- E.g. innovative solutions for communication network

Transnational Access- provide trans-national access to researchers/research teams- should be implemented in a coordinated way- The research team, or its majority, must come from countries other than where the operator of the infrastructure is established

Networking Activities - e.g. joint management and pooling of distributed resources;- e.g. strengthening of virtual research communities;

- e.g. development of common standards, protocols and interoperability, benchmarking;

- e.g. development and maintenance of common databases for the purpose of networking and management of the users and infrastructures- e.g. spreading of good practices, consultancy and training courses to new users- etc.

ESFRI Roadmap: The Guideline

1000 experts from all fields of research involved

Policy-makers, funders, industry, society…Indication for future Actions

This roadmap is gradually updated in the upcoming years with new projects (new edition expected at the end of 2010)

Switzerland is e.g. involved in the SSH working group, lead by Dr. Peter Farago of FORS, Lausanne

The Swiss ESFRI Delegate is Dr. Philipp Langer from SER

E-Infrastructures: Virtual Communities

Aim: developing a new research environment, building upon the ICT capabilities of existing infrastructures

Page 14: J. Sauer (Eurosearch Office Switzerland) - Research infrastructures in Europe

14

Definition of E-Infrastructures

Virtual Research Environment with easy access for scientific community all over the word

Foster the emergence of new working methods Strengthening of more intense collaboration between research centres and their researchers in 'virtual research communities'

Further development and evolution of high-capacity and high-performance communication (GÉANT) and grid empowered infrastructures
